Qllllllllllg A thin margin of one point kept the Bushnell High School Gators from capturing the 1948 championship in the West Coast Conference. That heart breaker came on a rain swept field the night the Gators hooked up with the Brooksville Leopards. The conference title was at stake and every person who braved the rain that night knew it. Brooksville came to town, unbeaten and unscored upon, but that latter record was marred be- fore the half. A,tricky pass play was good for a Bushnell touchdown, but the extra point try, also a pass, failed. Then came the play that set Brooksville supporters wild, and was to dampen the title hopes of the Bushnell fans. A 75 yard punt return was good for a Leopard touchdown and the try for the point was good. Thus that thin one point prevented Bushnell from a title, but it didn't keep them from surprising their support- ers with the best grid record here in years. A hint thatBushnell might be a conference power house came in the first game, as Groveland fell 19 to 6. Then came victories over Wildwood 14 to 75 Zephyrhills 21 to 65 Largo 35 to O, and Our'Lady of Perpetual Help of Tampa 47 to 12. Webster, playing inspired ball, held the Gators to a 0 to O tie, and then Inverness was downed 7 to 6 in probably what was the best ball game played here during the season. That defeat knock- ed the Citrus County lads from the title picture. After the Brooksville heart breaker, the Gators rebounded with a fine offensive display to win from New Port Richey 25 to 7. Four Gators were honored on the all conference team. They were Gilbert Vickers and Harold Goodwin, backs, Gordon Smith, a tackle and Billy jackson, an end. All received the conveted gold footballs. A11 in all, the Bushnell team was a team that the fans could root for and mean it. Outweighed andoutmannedin practically every contest, the Gators threw the ball around like it was hot and laterals were used plentifully in their flashy attack. That it worked is evident when it is remembered that Bushnell was the only team to score against the conference winners, Brooksville and that they piled up touchdowns against heavier opponents It was a great season from the Gator point of view. Much, much better than fans had any right to expect before the season began. Early in january the loyal Bushnell Boosters Club entertained the cheerleaders and the football squad at a banquet, Merritt, Farrar, Vickers, Vann , Smith, and Goodwin were presented with sweaters since this was their last year on the team. Dr. Holland and Dr. Benevield, who stood ready and willing at all times to give the boys professional aid, were awarded jackets. u an Ti. 1 1, ,r tyi- ,Q ix ..'- ,3 '. ., , Wm, ..,,..:h3.., f' 1 1 X, I ,P -qw' , ww, . Let's put away the thoughts of the daygahead Em if and look back on the past. l In September of 1937, Mrs. Parker introduced KF many of us to our first taste of school. Our troubles K with the hard multiplication tables, fractions, and long c division during the first six grades are blotted out by memories of the fun we had together. Each of us looked forward to entering high school which we knew would be different. just think! We would change classes every hour! In each class we would have a different teacher! We would be able to enter the different competitive sports, and actually have study hall peri- od! Why, all of that was almost unbelievable. But soon we found that it was the same daily routine--school. Though we were a large class of almost equal number of boys and girls, when we entered high school, many of our boys, for various reasons, withdrew from school. Our class gradually dwindled down to five boys and twenty-five girls. With this number, we have proudly gone through high school days, chuck full of life and fun. Who can forget that beach party at Eaton's Beach for the Seniors, when we--the Freshman class--were hosts! What a trip--a truck ride, good eats, good swimming, and a grand crowd. During our Freshman year we were thrilled to have from our class, james Wade as king and Sarah Malory as queen to reign over the Halloween carnival. Beach parties and class parties were enjoyed by all throughout our Sophomore year. Mrs. Brenneis, who had been our sponsor for two years left us at the end of the term. We honored her with a farewell party and presented her with a gift. Then came our junior year. So many things in store: banquet for Seniors, dances after games, junior play, and class parties! The dances netted us little profit, but they were fun. With the aid of our Sponsor, Mrs. Davidson, we presented the play Grandad Steps Out . The banquet with Southern Plantation as its theme was a big affair. This was the year which was to set a precedent for having an annual Christmas patty for the juniors and Seniors. Mrs. Davidson and Mrs. Potter, the sponsors, entertained both groups. We had a hilarious evening of fun, a Christmas tree, and gifts for all. The most happy event of the year was the getting of our class rings. We were about to become seniors! Q The senior year came in with a bang. Thirty happy seniors were looking forward to graduation. Before january 2, 1949, five of our class were married. f Marie Thomas Marsh and Erma Vann Connellcontinued X their school career. Success has been enjbyed through- . out, due to the hard efforts of our class as a whole, I to the guidance of our sponsor, and co-sponsor, Mrs. Potter and Mr. jones, and to the co-operation of our J X r . During the first semester we en-, 5 A T joyedaclass supper at Dade Parkg The Halloween carnival with Grace Brown and Harvey Vann as king and queeng and the big junior- Senior Christmas party at the Club House where we were entertained by the sponsors and co-sponsors of both classes. After semester tests we began to feel that our dream of graduation was rapidly approaching reali- zation. One morning in February what a thrill it was to hear Mrs. Potter say All seniors please report for correct measurements for caps and gowns. In March, club banquets, In April,--showers--and beach parties. ln May that eagerly anticipated junior-Senior prom. and the senior play. june 6, Graduation! But what? We have mingled emotions. Though we feel sad at the parting of class mates we are looking forward to the future with ambition and courage. GQGGQGGQGGQGGQGGQGGQGGQG CLASS PROPI-IECY The time is 1959, and the class of '49 is againtogether, for a special reunion. This, being to hear a record from a special scientific invention of only a few years, the wire recorder, which will relate to us the out- standing accomplishments of each of us during the last ten years. The record is beginning with the wonderful tones of a pipe-organ followed, by the strains of a choir lost in the warmth of the words of the anthem. Two voices are outstanding in the heavenly chorus and the class of '49 knows without a doubt that Margaret and Caroline have become famous for their modern harmony, and are sharing their gracious gift with the world by singing the songs of the Master. Let us pray, came the minister's plea and Harvey's convincing voice asked God's blessing on the congregation as the service concluded. Then a resounding bellow broke the spell as James' admonishing voice was clearly recognized. Gentlemen of the jury ---------- and his voice was lost in the great applause which filled the courtroom. T formation and run ---------- to the ----------- and we knew it was Gilbert whose dreams had been fulfilled when he had become the Coach of Notre Dame. An advertising of Diamond Rice imported from China exclusively by our own ---------- Gordon Smith. Then came the reports of the docking of the great fishing expedition led by Harold Goodwin on Gum Slough. Marjorie is touring Africa and teaching natives the American ver- sion of the Congo. Iris is joint owner of the world renowned airplane factory, Smooth- Not Toe-Knockers. , Eloise, the first woman president, accompanied by her personal secretary, Lona, is touring the United States. Esther, who is now married to the king of Boogie-Woogie, is seen in the world famous beauty parlor owned by Frances Vann. Grace, has recently moved into her million-dollar apartment, and Ina Mae has at last completed her Streamlined tourist home on Wade's Corner. Elva and Maxine have represented the '49ers in the theatre. In the scientific world, Barbara, by a secret chemical process, has created living protoplasm. B. B., has at last found a cure for cancer. Frances Marian has devised an off-spring of ultra-violet light, known as Lavender - Blue . . Anne, has secured the position of auditor to the Gatorzette Laura, is known for her unparalleled speed in typing. Bobby, is celebrating her second anniversary living in her home--the only one in the United States completely made of tile. Frances Giddens, is the wife of a noted naval officer. Lavonia has completed her collection of japanese silver. Hazel, who always loved children, is now teaching kindergarten. With this the record died away. The future was in our hands. A. and High School, Friday, p October 29, on the football field. Some of the many attractions were Floral City, the African monkey, the Country Store, the One-eyed Monster, the Auction sale, and a For- tune Telling booth. A pileau supper was served in the school lunchroom at 5:30. A parade of the masked children and decorated bikes was led by the band. Four of the costumes were selected as the best. The prettiest was won by Sue Bennett, the most original by Tommy Swain, the cleverest by Fannie Mae Alewine, and the best decorated thing on wheels was owned by Gene Hicks. A program was presented in the auditorium where the King and Queen, selected from the senior class by a student vote were crowned. They were attended by the most popular couples from the eighth through the eleventh grades. Billy jackson acted as master of ceremonies. Charlotte Hunter and Mike Kellum crowned the queen and king, Grace Brown and Harvey Vann. The attendants from the eighth grade were Sylvia Center and Bobby Jackson, from the ninth grade, Barbara Wolf and jerry Sellers from the tenth, julia Ann Hall and Dell Goodwin, and from the eleventh were Becky Sharpe and Billy Livingston. A most entertaining program, which was presented by the students, was enjoyed by all. The school appreciates the interest shown by the parents of our community in bringing this evening of fun and pleasures to the young people. FLAG RAISING On Tuesday afternoon, Dec. 7, in a very solemn ceremony held in front of the Bushnell High School, the Huland K. Hunt Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars presented the School with a United States Flag. A parade was led by the high school band and a corps of veterans in uniform. Mr. Burton Marsh made a short talk, speaking of the sacred- ness of the occasion and the pleasure it gave the V. F. W. to make the presentation. Ile presented the flag to Mr. Garth who thanked the Veter7 ans for their gift. The flag was raised while The Star Spangled Banner was played by the band. The people and students then saluted the flag and made their pledge of allegiance. The V. F. W. will long be remem- bered for this 'appropriate gift. PARENTS' NIGHT S t if S Parents' night at the Bushnell High School was well attended by the adults of Bushnell and the surrounding communities. Mr. Garth, principal of the school, introduced Mrs. Binger, who led in the group singing. Following this, he introduced Mr. Button Marsh, a former student of the school and now a county service officer, who made a splendid talk. He particularly stressed the need for education, a fact that he discovered when the men were being inducted into the Army. Mr. Marsh explained the program now being carried out for the benefit of our war veterans. Florida, he says, is rapidly becoming school conscious , and he told something of our expanding education program. A humorous skit, The Little Red Schoolhouse , was given by some of the prominent men and women of the town ---- It seemed to recall their childhood pranks for they remembered all of the tricks children still play when the teacher is not looking. After the program in the auditorium, the teachers went to their class- rooms to meet the parents of their students. It acquainted them with the surroundings of their children and gave the teachers an opportunity to have discussions about the individual students. Such parent-teacher relation- ships are good for the school because only the best work can be accom- plished when the teacher fully understands the child's background. Delicious refreshments were served by the committee late in the evening. W. P. Davidson, supervising principal of Sumter County schools, lauded the motives of such activities and said that other schools in the county will arrange similar programs. It brings the parents closer to the actual work the child is doing in the schools, he said. This was one of the three Occasions in thelschool year when the school buses were used to transport the parents. JZ-f'K2v'. .JKT V .-i'Q', .X!' 22' .
