Mrs. Olli began teaching at Burt Township School when the students of the present grad- uating class were second graders. She continued to lend a hand during their third, fifth and sixth grades. In the sixth grade, Mrs. Olli helped the class begin our money making endeavor with a combination school-town newspaper called the Brat ' s Back Talk. A heartfelt thanks, Mrs. Olli, for all the help you ' ve given us! In the following pages the 1975 Polar Bear Staff will attempt to portray through words and photos the 1974-75 schoolyear. The yearbook staff mascot, Sonny-Bear, will be your guide as you look at the year just gone by. One of the most exciting experiences of our lives is finally coming to an end. September 5, 1962 marked the starting point while May 30, 1975 marks the finish line. Most of us have attended G.M.H.S. for thirteen years with many mixed feelings... feelings of pain, happiness, and at times even pure hatred. But I think given the choice we wouldn ' t have traded it for anything. Our class in kindergarten was fairly large. The only remains of that group are six of us who have adopted the nickname of The Six Originals. Marty Massey, Joetta Handrich, Sandy Eastman, Irene Endress, Jodee Lefebvre, and Aleta Niemi are the only ones who have stayed since that first day of school so long ago. Despite this fact, the five others who have joined us since then are just like one of the family and thought of dearly. The first two members to join our class in sixth grade were Don Alverson of Rochester and Tom Thompson of Detroit. We then had another addition in eighth grade. ..Kim Kirkens of Kalamazoo. Our final additions in eleventh grade were Mitzi Laeder of Grayling and Ron Tester of Springport. We had one more addition this year who didn ' t stay... Donna Richards of Mecosta. I guess what we really want to say is thanks. Thanks to our parents, teachers and anyone else who has made this part of our lives such an enjoyable one. People say that graduation is just the beginning so thanks for making this beginning possible. God Bless, THE SENIORS OF 1975 JOHN DOUGLAS THOMPSON JR. A lot of progress was made by the students and we are all very grateful. We would also like to thank all the organizations of Grand Marais who have donated money for new music and instru- ments. The 1974-75 Girl ' s Basketball Season was something less than perfect. Having a record of only one regular season win does not exactly tell the whole story though. Several of the games were very close, especially one played on Manis- tique ' s court which went into overtime. District tournaments were held in En- gadine this year and the Mama Bears won the first game, defeating the Enga- dine Eagles. In the second and cham- pionship game the Mama Bears lost to the Mackinac Island Lakers. This was the last year of basketball for three seniors, Mitzi Laeder, Sandra East- man and Joetta Handrich, the latter two having played since girl ' s basketball was organized at Burt Township School in 1970. Tammie Tester, Pam Martin, Joetta Handrich, Kim Begker, Lisa Allera Mitzi Laeder(Insert) m Lm The Polar Bears did quite well this year winning a record fourteen out of seventeen regular games with Mr. Neal Beaver as coach. This year also a second record was broken in that the Polar Bears swept the Northern Lights League with 8 wins - no loss record to win the League Championship trophy. Basketball is a fun and exciting sport as most of its players will agree, but along with the thrill one gets out of playing the game there is a lot of hard work involved. The ex- ercising, the sprints, the layups all get to be sort of a drag after while, but when the players come charging out of the locker room on Friday night and hear the sounds of the cheerleaders and fans cheering, they get that great feeling of accomplishment know- ing that whatever hard and strenuous effort had to be made in getting ready for the game, it was all worth that one great mo- ment. Cheerleaders, accompanied by Mr. Mrs. Peterman, went to Midland to participate in a cheerleading workshop sponsored by the Dynamic Cheerleaders Associa- tion. Saturday was spent in various activities beginning with competition for the Michigan State Cheer- leading Championship. Professional cheerleading instructors were on hand to give assistance in learning mounts, pompon routines, chants and group cheers. Throughout the basketball season, the J.V. Cheerleaders worked hard incorporating the mounts into their floor cheers and during the half time of the Homecoming game they performed a pompon Diane Klotz (Sub.) Mrs. Peterman, Lisa Monache (Sub.) Advisor Chris Lundquist Dawn Becker Cindy Barney Lisa McDonald RoxAnne Hicks Kathv Stier 31 Women ' s Lib Our Grand Marais Junior Varsity basketball team is once again cham- pions of the Northern Lights League. This is the third time in the past four years that our Cubs have won the league championship. However, this season our JV must share the con- ference title with the Paradise JV, since both teams hold identical records of 6 wins and 2 losses in league play. In the final conference game of the season, the Cubs lost a thrilling dou- ble over-time battle to Paradise, 39-38. This loss enabled the Paradise team to become co-champions in the JV competition. This year Coach Carl Minor gave the local fans a new twist to area basketball by allowing a girl to be a member of the squad. Ramona Bailey, an eighth grade student, gave some excellent performances. As the season progressed, she be- came a regular starter on the team. At Mackinac Island, Ramona sur- prised the fans by scoring the first six points of the game on outside jump shots. She went on to the high point man - sorry about that - the hight point woman of the game. Our junior high team was com- posed of the above named 7th and 8th grade members, plus several additional girls who joined the team in their victories over Germfask. The girls who were members of the Junior High Basketball team were Ramona Bailey, Cindy Barney, Cin- dy Potter, Noreen Monache, Dawn Becker, and Lisa Monache. 32 33 m Thanh You The Seniors of 1975 would like to take this opportunity to extend their thanks to all the people and businesses of Grand Marais and the neighboring eoniniunities who have given so graeiously of their time and efforts to help us through our high school ear. Although he is gone, his memory will remain in our hearts forever. To adults Grump was the newspaperman and hotel manager, while to children he was the man behind the candy counter, ever-patient and always waiting with a smile. A y ' % Johnny Jenkins We lost John in a fatal automobile accident on June 11, 1974. John spent only one year in Burt Township School having moved from Newberry, Michigan with his parents John Shirley Jenkins, Sr. who purchased the Northern Resthome. John participated in school activities and was a member of the basketball team. Even though he is gone, his memory will always be with us. 1974 Graduation 4-H Talent Show Prom LOOKING BACK AT 1974 Junior Carnival Athletic Banquet Parent ' s Night ...And so concludes another yearbook; another schoolyear. The students of each class will now progress to the next highest grade and the Seniors will graduate and leave Burt Township School, not knowing exactly what will lie ahead. The experiences of this past year, however, will continue to be remembered and will endure to aid each student in making decisions in the future.
