The original school was built in the late 1800 ' s, the first in Alger County. After years of serving Alger County with assorted educational techniques, the building was found in shaky condition and in need of general repair; it was immediately condemned. Burt Township Board put the proposition of a new school to the voters and in 1928 was overwhelmingly approved. The final cost of the new building was $127, 991 .18. It was formally dedicated during commencement exercises on June 13, 1929. It was then an institution of a proud graduating class of five. It remains today, a building standing, tall and proud of its achievements, old, but always a friend. SENIORS SENIORS DALE E. The Fantastics of N.M.U. Hill ' s Store being torn down. Merrit ' s cabin on Lonesome Point Valentine ' s Day came late for ' 73. Homecoming King and Queen ATHLETICS GRAND MARAIS POLAR BEARS Grand Marais is again number one, winning one trophy in baseball in the spring of ' 72 and tliree in basketball in ' 73. Coach Neal Beaver ' s Polar Bears won another Co- Championship with Alba, each having a ten and two record. Dale Dombrowski was our only representative on the All- Star Tournament Team being selected unanimous- ly. The Girls ' Varsity found the competition a bit tougher losing two out-of- league close games to Manistique and Newberry. In league action they came out on top with a four and record. The J. V. team again defeated all league competition with no problems. They ended with an eight and season. The previous spring our Polar Bear baseball team, coached by James Becker, beat the Paradise Rockets, Macki- nac Lakers, and Alba Wildcats by quite wide margins. It was a good year for all the Bears !
