CENTER, was succeeded by Warren Burger Burt Community School Burt, Iowa SCHOOL COLORS: PURPLE G GOLD ANNUAL EDITOR: JILL SMITH ASSISTANT EDITOR: VICKI WESTLING ADVISOR: MR. HERRICK The little ones who grow up to be big ones someday have to begin somewhere. Our freshman girls gave the preschoolers a small glimpse of the fun in store for them in their school days ahead. Peaceful solitude? It's hard to say by the looks of three of our senior girls. Study hall becomes the center of learning and new discoveries on your own. Sharing our talents with others is a very large part of our effort to mold a well-rounded person. The annual vocal festival is one of the many ways to obtain this. It opens the door to wider interests and new experiences with others. Our attempts to learn aren't always successful, as Frank Becker can probably tell us. Our home economic boys proved that there really is something they can learn. If noth ing else, it may be the fact that burning the bottoms out of pans just isn't what the teacher had in mind. The climax of more than 30 years of service for our school was brought to our attention with a vase of roses presented to Mrs. Grover at her last vocal concert. She has set an ideal example of dedication to her work, and one that if followed, would certainly bring success to many others. Dedication We, the graduating class of 1970, proudly dedicate this annual to you, Mr. Nydegger, for all your concern and understanding you've shown for us, the in- spiration you have given to each one of us, your time and effort put forth in- structing us, and especially your advice and willingness to help us reach our goals. Thank you, Mr. Nydegger. GRADUATES i r FRANCIS AREND Football Librarian Plays Play Assistant Track Waiter 1 1 3,4 2.3.4 1.2.4 2 GAYLE WERMERS Annual Staff Class Officer F.T.A. Kenneth Sarchet, Supt. Harry Haven, Sec. Maxine Bristow, Art Person, Edward Smith, Paul Schwieger, and Roscoe Mawdsley. Burt High School Principal, Mr. Ronald Foelske, is concerned with the best interests of BHS and its students. • i Book work, telephone, and lunch tick- ets, plus other varied duties occupy Mrs. Davis' day as Office Secretary. The BHS Superintendent, Mr. Haven works many hours weekly to keep the school running efficiently and smoothly. Mrs. Mary Dugan helps our little tykes spruce up on their reading, as she is our remedial reading teacher. The art room is where you go to get away from it all and express yourself. That's just what we did this year, under the supervision of Mrs. Marie Wilson. Mrs. Nancy Steele, librarian, is always ready to help us find something good to read, either for enjoyment or for assign- ments. i M Always ready to give a helping hand to the other teachers, is Mrs. Eleanor Stenzil, the teachers aid. When our Junior High needs assistance in their studies, they always know that Mrs. Charlene Brace will be there to help. MISS BROWN English Drama Speech MR. ADEMA Girls' Coach Grade Phy. Ed. The Mandarin insists Chan must 'win' his daughter to deserve her, but his aunt, Poo Chow, has different ideas. When the Mandarin demands sight of the dragon, the keepers are in a fix to produce something that doesn't exist or else lose their jobs. When Chan hears of their plight, he uses it to his own advantage. With the help of some American sailors, the 'dragon' is produced and Chan is able to win the Mandarin's favor and his lovely Kooie Yan. Seven seniors headed the cast in this years operetta. Jill Smith played Poo Chow opposite junior Kevin Fraser as the Mandarin. Marcia Sodcrberg, Kooie Yan, also played opposite a junior, Frank Becker, as Chan. Other seniors in- cluded: Ruth Long as the Mandarin's private secretary, Ho Tong; Connie Sheirbon and Lennice Waltman as the Keepers of the Dragon, Ling and Kling. Janice Magnusen and Donna Miller were friends of Kooie Yan, Kum Fa and Lila Yan. Other principals were sophomore Dale Fraser and freshman Tim Sheirbon as the sailors. The Juniors were led by Pres. Kevin Fraser, V. Pres. Frank Becker, Treas. John Chipman, and Sec. Vicki Westling in their money making projects. Their many activities included selling magazines, making lots of popcorn for hungry basketball fans, and working into the wee hours of the morning at Stokely Van Camp. The Fresh- man officers wanted their class to get off on the right foot in high school, so they started them out on working at bake sales and also concession stands. After all the profits were taken in, they celebrated with a bowling party. They were led by Pres. Kathy Eimers, Treas. Cindy Sill, V. Pres. Sharon Patterson, and Sec. Pam Soderberg. Commendable Leadership Brings Success The Sophomore Class earned a sizeable amount of money this year under the leader- ship of Pres. Roger Sarchet and V. Pres. Joyce Larsen. They held a car wash in the fall and had several bake sales. Pop and pop- corn were sold at their concession stands at Jr. High and Indian League basketball games. Keeping track of all the profits were Treas. Sandi Zwiefel and Sec. Carol Sill. Class of 1971 FIRST ROW: Roberta Zwiefel, Marilyn Person, Vicki Westling, Cheryl Kruse, Cindy Patterson, Linda Arend.
