The production committee which is listed in the front of the annual has spent many hours in the planning and construction of this compilation and deserve praise for their efforts. To the editor of the annual staff, I wish to extend a special vote of appreciation for the many additional hours she has spent on this yearbook even after school was out. She not only came back to s’chool to work on it, but even through the month of June she met with me in our home to get this book completed. Thank you, Mary McFarland! Baccalaureate Helen M. Duane Hinckley Women of the Town and Choir: JoAnne Ackerman Janet Long, Pat Schwietert, Janice Abbas, Patsy Zwiefel, Jean Mescher Our Town Gary Stokes Director Senior Class History Monday morning, September 4, 1950, twenty-one scared but bright-eyed, happy children began their long journey toward their higher education in the Burt Community School. Those who began together were Jane Black, Lana Cunningham, Marlys Curtis, Janice Dreyer, Diana Gifford, Delores Jenkins, Sharon Krause, Virginia Lappe, Rebecca Meier, Agnes Sigsbee, Gwyneth Teeter, Ray Lichter, Allen Geilenfeld, Dennis Heerdt, Craig Lovstad, Henry Heiderscheidt, Ruth Chantland, Rose Kahler, Lynn Marbaugh, Gregory Elberts, and Larry Plumb. Under the guiding hand of Mrs. Helen Smith we were well on our way toward higher goals. Ruth Chantland left us after five days, and Rose Kahler dropped on January 19 due to illness. Lynn Marbaugh, Gregory Elberts, and Larry Plumb moved at the close of the first semester. Douglas Fanning joined our class from Marshalltown at this time. At the end of the year we lost Henry Heiderscheidt, Rebecca Meier, and Douglas Fanning. Mrs. Eunice Klinger greeted us at the door for our first day in grade one. Five new faces among us were Janet Long, Jerry Gifford, Lewis Kent, Verlyn Larsen, and David McFarland. Dennis Heerdt moved to a rural school on March 1, and David McFarland moved to Bancroft at the close of the first semester. Kenneth McKenzie joined our class on February 1. We lost Delores Jenkins at the close of the year. Miss Eleanor Hase led us as energetic second graders. David Bunkofske joined us in the fall, and Marjorie Baumgard came on November 24. At the close of the year we lost David Bunkofske, Marlys Curtis, and Jerry Gifford. Sue Rasmussen and Brian Zwiefel joined us from rural schools in the third grade. Ronald Smith began the yea r and left after eleven days. Sharon Krause moved to Fenton, Iowa, in March. Raylene Mitchell joined us in April. Mrs. Joan Andreson was our teacher. The fall of 1954 brought another increase to our class. Judy Abbas, Terry Cook, Sharalyn Noland, Dick Presthus, and Donald Reutzel joined us. Dennis Heerdt realized his folly in leaving us, so he returned. Kenneth McKenzie moved in November, and Craig Lovstad moved to Mason City. Mary McFarland joined us from Emmetsburg. Vernon Abbas transferred from Algona in March, but he left again at the close of the year. Mrs. Earl Stevens was our teacher. Mrs. Neoma Thompson led us through fifth grade with flying colors. Duane Hinckley joined us in the fall, and Vernon Abbas came back in November. Bill Wermers became one of our class on January 3 when he moved here from South Dakota. Ruth Chantland rejoined us on March 12, and left at the close of the year. Janice Estberg entered our class in sixth grade, but she dropped out in October. Mary Louise Gatton joined us in October for 43 days. Erby Shipler joined us in March, and he dropped at the close of that year. We were sorry to lose Brian Zwiefel this year due to illness. Mrs. E. A. Lee was our teacher. Mrs. Bertha Newbrough and Mrs. Larry Beckley met us with open arms as we entered junior high. In 7th grade Donald Reutzel moved to Belgrade, Minnesota, in January, and Pat Hoover joined us from Corwith on March 3. In August of 1959 we became freshmen at Burt High School. We were really getting in the swing of things when Sharalyn Noland moved to Missouri, and Lewis Kent moved to Algona, Iowa. Not a group to be defeated, we forged onward as sophomores. Marcia Strange was the last person to enter our class, and she returned on February 21, 1961. During our junior year we lost no one but in September of our senior year, Lana Cunningham left in favor of marriage. We now number 20 and out of that 20, eight have been together since they started in kindergarten. They are Jane Black, Janice Dreyer, Diana Gifford, Virginia Lappe, Gwyneth Teeter, Ray Lichter, Dennis Heerdt, and Allen Geilenfeld. 33 Senior Class Will We, the Senior class of 1963 of Burt Community School, of the County of Kossuth, and the State of Iowa, being of sound mind and body, do hereby make, publish, and declare this as our last will and testament; hereby revoking all former wills, bequests, and devices of whatever nature or form heretofore made by us. I, Judy Abbas, do will and bequeath to JoAnne Ackerman my ability to change from guard to a forward next year. May she have the best of luck! I, Marjorie Baumgard, do will and bequeath to Susan Lovstad my ability not to laugh in band when Francie and Pat are laughing! I, Jane Black, do will and bequeath to Marlys Curtis my ability to drive through red lights and get left in Algona. I, Terry Cook, do will and bequeath to Floyd Lavrenz my ability to drive Roger's car and not get picked up. May he have better luck than I did! To Jerry Kissner I leave my great ability to throw airplanes in Mr. Stokes’ study hall. May you be as lucky as I was--the LAST time! I, Janice Dreyer, do will and bequeath to Julie Thompson the mixed chorus and physical education classes to tell her jokes in--as if she doesn't already use them! To Larry Johnson I will my ability to get rides to school when it is cold. I, Allen Geilenfeld, do will and bequeath to Eugene Gardner my physics lens diagrams. May he have better luck with them than I did. I, Diana Gifford, do will and bequeath to Lois McFarland my ability to keep quiet in study hall. May she use it to good advantage like 1 — haven't. I, Dennis Heerdt, do will ancj bequeath to David Bunkofske my ability to lead the Burt High School Band. May he gain control over the hat in the wind as I didn't. To Jerry Gifford I leave my ability to get locked inside a roll-away bed at Minneapolis. May he not feel as crushed as I did! I, Duane Hinckley, do will and bequeath my ability of great speed to Raymond Spry. May he never be late for mixed chorus again. I, Patricia Hoover, do will and bequeath to Jane Mitchell my driving ability so she doesn't run into K H buildings; I also will her the frames of my glasses so she always has two on hers.
