May the sparkle and glitter make your eyes burn with tears of fond memories of school days. To better cradle the infant a small, one-story schoolhouse was erected in the south east section of Burt, where Bill Garmans now live. This small building was soon over- crowded, and the Burt Select School was established in the winter of 1890-91, to accommo- date the advanced grades. These classes were held in a second story room of the hardware and lumber office of J. D. McDonald. In March, 1892, the Burt Independent School District was organized with John Kerr, George Marble, and William Cork serving as the first board members. In the same year, on the present school grounds, a wooden schoolhouse was erected which accommodated all the grades. The first buildings were abandoned to be used for various business purposes. This new building was used until 1910 when a brick building was constructed. The wooden structure was divided, moved east of the school and was remodeled for dwellings. In 1936 an addition was built which afforded four new, roomy classrooms, and a splendid gymnasium-auditorium combination with a large stage to make possible more extensive athletic and dramatic programs. In the spring of 1937 fire destroyed the inside of the original brick building, and great loss was suffered. However, the damage was repaired in time for school to open on schedule in the fall. In 1948-’49 another addition was made---a building, erected east of the first addition, and housing the home economics and manual arts departments, and the two busses. In recent years a highly popular hot lunch program was established which serves approximately 120 pupils daily. The kitchen is in the ticket office room, and until January, 1949 the lunch was served in the adjacent gym. Now the old home economics room is being utilized as a dining room. In 1947 school bus routes were established in the surrounding farm territory to give transportation to students of all grades. Miss Mary Dalton and G. N. Patterson were among the very first teachers of Burt, but the first superintendent, A.A. Seifert, came in 1892. The others were: Hugh Conner, 1893- ’94-'95; Frank Van Erdwyk, 1896-’97; C. A. Johnson, 1898; M. E. Lumbar, 1899-1900; L.A. Glassburn, 1901-’02; A. S. Murry, 1903-'04-'05; M. E. Lumbar. 1906; G. E. Osmundson, 1907; C. W. Mangun and F. J. Conley, 1908; R. S. Grossman, 1909; P. They were Herman Rachut Jr., Marlene Dremmel, Milton Salisbury, Donald Garman, Gary Schenck, Duane Pankuk, and Carol Reimers. As the years progressed more jewels were tossed into the chest; Joyce Ryerson in the third grade, John Groen in the fourth grade, Evelyn Daniels and Bueford Kickbush in the eighth grade. Two jewels, Donald and Duane, were lost for several years, but they were found again. In our freshman year five more diamonds were dug up in the country: Darrell McFarland, Marilyn Trunkhill, Joan McWhorter, Darlene and Donald Eimers. Annalise Gebken and Leonard Stenzel were found in our sophomore year. Jeanette Horstman made our heap of nineteen jewels complete in the last of our junior year. Each of these nineteen diamonds is of the finest blue-white type. All have been carefully cut and proportioned in the past twelve years and their brilliant character facets will not wear down in the future, but glow on in ever finer and more perfect settings; their sparkles will ever be a source of pride and joy to the old treasure chest of Burt High. THE CLASS PROPHECY One sunny day in New Orleans, in the year 1959, we are bubbling over with ex- citement, for we are going to the Mardi Gras. We have been invited by an old schoolmate of ours, Joan McWhorter, although, now she is married to a very promi- nent electrical engineer, Herman Rachut Jr. We love their southern hospitality in their lovely New Orleans home. After a period of reminiscence we decide to eat at one of the exclusive restaurants. We hail a taxi and to our astonishment the driver is none other than Duane Pankuk. Duane says something about another surprise as he drives to a D-X station where the thin, but prosperous looking proprietor is Darrell McFarland. Still enjoying these pleasant shocks, we hurry on to the restaur- ant. As we settle ourselves at the table we immediately recognize the plump figure of the approaching waitress as that of Marilyn Trunkhill. Later, as we cross the street, we are nearly run over by a speeding truck which has a sigh reading Groen’s-Dog-Catching-Service.” That name sounds familiar, and when the driver comes over to apologize in true southern style, we see that it is our old acquaintance, John Groen. We learn from him that dog-catching can be a profitable business. Continuing on our way we glance up and are shocked to see hang- ing above our heads a big shingle, ‘‘Carol Reimers--Dentist.‘‘ This we must see! In the waiting room, a receptionist, (a cute little trick, wouldn’t you know it?) tells us the doctor’s busy. Glancing at a magazine as we wait, we notice a very charming and familiar figure, the same saucy blue eyes, blonde hair, of course, it’s Joyce Ryerson. She looks elegant, and upon closer scrutiny we see the creation she is wearing is one of Miss Jeanette Horstman's. Ah! we always knew something would come of those “Doodlings.” Suddenly we hear a loud moan coming from the dental chair. Peering around the corner we see—No! It can’t be! -- Gary Schenck, now known as “Toothless.” He tells us he is a postmaster, and as for Carlos, we can all see he enjoys his work. It is nearing parade time, so we hurry out of the office and start looking for a vantage point from which we can get a good view of the floats and costumes. Suddenly we are attracted by a rousing cheer coming from a nearby baseball diamond. An exhibition game between the Yankees and Dodgers is under way with Lefty Garman, the brilliant new Dodger pitcher, pitching an excellent game. What a pleasure to see him in action again! It brings back memories of good old Burt High. After the parade we make our way up the crowded street to buy a sack of pop corn when we are greeted by a hearty “Hello.” We have a hard time recognizing Barney in his clown suit. He introduces us to his charming wife and two children, also in clown suits. They are on their way to a masquerade party, and during our short visit we learn that he is doing quite well in the grocery business-“Sloop’s Market,” one of the best grocery stores in the neighborhood. 25 Since we, too, are invited to one of the many Mardi Gras Balls, we push our way hurriedly through the crowd of noisy merrymakers, and we are greeted by a hearty slap on the back. Turning with expectant eagerness we see---a complete stranger. Seems he mistook us for someone else, and after confused apologies he dashes off into the crowd. We hurry on a little disappointed, but our spirits are lifted as we notice the shy, friendly grin of Donald Wimers. He is prospering on his 180-acre, up-to-date farm. He also gives us good news about his sister, Darlene. We are pleased to hear she is married to a lawyer and has a nice home in Seattle, Washington. We eventually arrive at the ball, attired in our costumes. As we make our way to the hostess to apologize for our tardiness, one of our party suddenly exclaims, '‘Effie Daniels!' and there she is, as pretty as ever, wearing a very lovely costume. We soon discover she is private secretary to a very prominent business man, and according to her everything has been just ducky” for a long time. She joins us as we wander over to the punch bowl. We are not surprised to find the man, who is helping himself so lib- erally is Leonard Stenzel. Stenz tells us he is coaching a girl’s basketball team, which has made an impressive record. He also informs us that Annalise is teaching biology in the same school. After this eventful day we at last find ourselves at the airport, saying goodbye to Joan and Herman, and boarding the plane for our homeward flight. On the plane the friendly stewardess is immediately recognized as Marlene Dremmel. She proudly tells us that Bueford is the pilot, and seeing the sparkle on her left hand, we Know she is wearing it for no one else but the pilot, who gave it to her on one of their flights to Mexico. As the plane takes off we peacefully settle back, tired, but happy over seeing once more the class of '49. We have also shown our sparkle in such things as History, Geometry, and English: We are ready to work and have fun with parties etc. We are looking forward to living the exciting life of juniors. We are quite a valuable class as the future of Burt High School depends largely upon us. To in- crease our value we are studying such things as History, Arithmetic, Science, and English. We have already extended our interests into some fields of music such as band, and we can hardly wait until we can try our luck at high school activities. Mr. Officer: “What is the shape of the earth, Art?’’ Art: “It’s round.” Mr. O.: “And can you prove that it is round?” Art: “All right, it's square. I don’t want any argument.” Phillip: “If this guy. Experience, is the best teacher, why isn’t he on the faculty?” GRADES SIX AND SEVEN To the treasure chest we add thirty-five gold coins. With Mrs. Schrader as our teacher we have accomplished much in the fields of Science, English, Music and History. We have increased our value and will keep on doing so. Then will come the day we leave the treasure chest and make use of our knowledge to the honor of Burt High School. When we travel by jet An impression we’ll get That things are decidely humming. Since We’re faster than sound We’ll land on the ground Then listen and hear ourselves coming. GRADES FOUR AND FIVE Our room contributes a lot of gold pieces to the chest. We are thirty-nine in number. With Miss Larson's help we are learning Arithmetic, Science, Reading and Geography. All work and no play isn’t good either, so we had fun at our Christmas and Valentine parties. However, we have set a high goal and we will work hard to attain it. Mother: “Ronnie, did you get into the pie while I was gone?” Ronnie: “Not exactly, mother--The pie got into me. Mrs. L.: “Anne is progressing by leaps and bounds on her piano practice. Mr. L.: ‘T thought she couldn’t make all that racket with her’ hands alone.” EDUCATION-------is a companion which no misfortune can depress, no crime can destroy, no enemy can alienate, no despotism can enslave. We may be small, but we are steadily increasing our value. Under Miss McMahon’s teaching we are learning Science, Language, Arithmetic, and Reading. Even though we are small, remember, ‘‘Good things come in small packages!’ “Oh, these women and their families!” was the disgruntled remark of Dennis Shipler (a confirmed bachelor) as a little girl accidently placed her doll on a jig- saw puzzle Dennis was working. A LITTLE BOY’S MA By Tony Elton My ma knows a heap o’ things, Gee! I’ll say she’s smart! Why she can say the A-B-C's---- She knows ’em all by heart. She knows why stars don’t shine When nights are “skeery’’ black; She's great - - this ma o’ mine, I know that that's a fact. She told me why the moo-cow moos. And why my doggie barks -- What makes the old owl “Whooo’’ When day turns into dark. And never once when I'm at play Does she call out or shout; And never have I had to pay For tearing shirt sleeves out. What boys like, she knows it all, My ma, gee! she’s a joy; I sometimes think when she was small She must have been a boy! Children have more need of models than of critics...Joubert The children of today will be the architects of our country’s destiny tomorrow. James A. Garfield PRIMARY AND FIRST GRADE We are the smallest pieces of gold in the chest. Under Mrs. Hammerstrom’s guidance, however, we are steadily getting more valuable. We are learning numbers. Spelling, Reading and Writing and some day we will surprise you when we have a chance to leave the treasure chest and make our way out in the busy ex- change of the world. 35 What we first learn we best ken. Five junior pirates, whose echoes aren’t quite so melodious as yet, are taking lessons with hopes of joining the band. The captain and the crew sailed to Forest City and attended a band clinic, February, 9th. Two of their sea-faring mates, Joan McWhorter and Jr. Rachut, represented them in the massed band composed of two hundred and fifteen players. In the Spring a concert was held, and four solos were entered in the contest, with hopes of robbing a treasure of high ratings. The Band Mothers dipped into their treasure chest this year and came out with a new baritone horn and a new bass drum. In order to replenish their chest they snatched a few coins from honest citizens of Burt by selling them some of their baked gems.’’ February 28th, they increased their horde by serving a banquet. Thank you! Mothers, your sons and daughters really appreciate your practical backing! MIXED CHORUS This band of music loving pirates consists of about forty members who daily gather around their crew captain and raise their voices in harmonious tones and sing to their hearts content. There are a few small groups who gather together by themselves and loosen up their vocal cords on (hard to sing) songs. These are the girl’s sextette, girl’s trio, and madrigal. The crew as a whole hasn’t sailed very far away from home yet, but when contests come around they hope to sail a long, long way and gather all the award treasures that they can. Last year Beverly Ditsworth (baritone sax, soloist) rated one at the state con- test. Shirley Lockwood (flute soloist) and the girl’s vocal trio rated two. The mixed chorus and girl’s glee club also rated two at the state. So we all hope these soloists, small groups and large groups will be successful in looting even more one and two ratings this year. From ‘‘Poor Richard’s Almanac” All things are cheap to the saving, dear to the wasteful. If you know how to spend less than you get, you have the philosopher’s stone. Well done is better than well said. Words may shew a man’s wit, but actions his meaning. There are no gains without pains. Have you somewhat to do Tomorrow, do it Today. What is serving God? ’Tis doing good to man. A word to the wise is enough., many words won’t fill a bushel. 38 CHONITA Operetta in three acts presented by the Burt High School Mixed Chorus with the following cast of characters: Murdo. . .
