5 Mr. Herbert Herbst - Princzpal Today in your American society there appears to be a trend toward moral disorientation. Individuals, in their attempt to achieve success, reach for the goal without too much concern about the means. The emphasis on success has caused a dilemma. On the one hand, opportunity is more widely dispersed than ever beforeg and at the same time we are less bound by the rules of family and community. Thus more responsibility is placed upon the individual to choose, on his own initative, the right road to follow. The responsibility for this choice lies somewhere between tight control from outside forces and complete individual freedom. Internal regulation of conduct is involved, however. It is not an authority but a self-imposed acceptance of the values of ethical living. If accepted as a way of life, this principle can contribute greatly to living in harmony with others and with one's self. 8 l
