During his twenty years of service to Burris School and the community as teacher, Boy Scout leader, and good citizen, he has been the inspiration that kept us going when we felt like giving up. The famous Myers, maxim, Uyou're going to win, you've got to put out has never failed to spur us on. It is with sincere admiration and respect that we dedicate the 1958 Oracle to MR. ERROL G. MYERS. BURRIS HIGH SCHOOL MUNCIE, INDIANA Dear Mom and Dad: Graduation Day, 1958 Well, here I am at the end of my Senior year, in just a little while I 'll be a graduate of Bur- ris High School. Golly, I can still remember the day you took me to school to register. I looked around at the other kids and all at once I was excited, and pleased, and scared. I remember the scraps I got into, but you were always there, trying to understand my mischievous nature. Gee, that was an odd time when I started noticing people of the opposite sex were different. The boys began to grow whiskers and the girls began to look like women. You told me how to dress and act on dates, but I, the big adult in junior High, had ideas of my own. I remember I took two hours to get ready for my first formal dance and my ears turned red when you gently teased me about my meticulousness! I finally made it to high school. I began to dress like an adult and paid less attention to radical fads that often left you displeased. I began to take part in high school activities and words like term reports, semester exams, tardy slips, and prom bids were added to my vocabulary. Remember when my bugs for Sophomore biology got loose in the house? That was even worse than the day my experiment blew up in chemistry class during my Junior year. Our boys were winning letters then and dreaming of the day they would proudly display their blue and gold jackets. The girls were trying out for varsity cheerleader and being elected queen of various events. We had some good talent in the band, orchestra, and choir, in fact, we were doing well in everything. That really was great on my sixteenth birthday when you showed me how to drive. Re- member how I practically counted the days until I got my license? I 'll bet your heart was in your throat when I zipped out of the driveway on my first solo fiight with the family car. But you can never realize how on-top-oithe-world I felt when you let me use the car for the Spring Dance. Of course, it wasn't all glory. I remember how sad I was when my eternal romance' ended in the spring of my junior year and I got my class ring back. Last fall I registered for my Senior Yearxthat fabulous, mythical year I 'd heard so much about. When I wasnit writing term reports or filling out endless correspondence' for college, I was having a ball. The greatest event of the year was the Senior Trip in November. Those seventy-two sleepless, active hours will always remain as some of the most memorable hours I have known. From the train to the fabulous life in New York and back to the train, we enjoyed every minute. I was glad, though, that Wednesday when you met me at the depot and took me home to sack out. Then came the operetta, basketball, and the Senior Play. Now the guys had their honor jackets, the girls were in block, and several class members were presidents of the many clubs in and around Burris. Finally, I am ending this fabulous year. Most in the class will go to college, some have de- cided to go into the services, and others are going right to work. We've had our final exams. The Junior-Senior Prom is over. Boy, I had a great time that night! You're probably wondering what prompted this hurried letter. You see, I began to think back and wonder how I'd ever made it. Illl tell you how, Mom, Dad. I made it withyour help. Your praises, your suggestions, your occasional lectures, and your pep-talks put me where I am right now. Gosh, Mom. . . Gee, Dad. . . Thanks. Nobody could be as proud or as lucky as I am today. Well, guess I better go now. It's only twenty minutes until commencement exercises begin. I 'll be looking for you out of the corner of 'nv eye.
