Those not pic- tured, since they were on duty at the time this photo was taken, were Robert Bill, Carl Clock, James Stepleton, David Dirlam, and David Hines. vel ORACLE STAFF To the uninitiated a yearbook is a chuckle, a memory, and a place in which to collect signatures. To the staff the completed book is a montage of long hours of planning make-up, taking pictures, writing copy, clipping snaps, sketch- ing art work, and racing to meet the engraver's deadline. As the result of these various procedures, the indispensable guidance of Mr. Anthony Tovatt, and the cooperation of the faculty, we bring you this 1953 Oracle. fl 5 is GN BURRIS OWL From the latest crush to the most exciting basketball game the staff of the Burris Owl has done a fine iob of keeping us entertained and well informed on all school news. Miss Margaret Walker sponsored this Junior Class proiect. gl THE BOOKSTORE The seniors who managed the bookstore for the first six weeks and the iuniors who then took charge offered a useful service to the student body. ,-,.-f ' 'uv' BOY SCOUTS Every Tuesday the Burris Boy Scouts, Troop 33, have met under the leader- ship of Mr. Errol Myers and Mr. Oliver Bumb. Burris School records were set in every event but two by this year's team. The team qualified only four men in the state meet, but had three state cham- pions: Paul Beckley in the backstroke, Dean Dewey in the breaststroke, and the trio of Beckley, Dewey, and Bill Shott, in the medley relay. Bob Golliver, the only other qualifier, took fifth in diving. The season's record was 9-4. The team will be hard hit next year by the loss of six Seniors. The team was coached by Robert Korsgaard, who did a fine iob in his first year as varsity swimming coach. ill 4 s l 5 ii A 1.3 X 3 'Q' State Medley Relay Champs, Bob Goll' ' over, Ball Shott, Paul Beckley, d GOWN er sob On , Deon Dewev flf Sl-,on Y Po p ul St te Breostskroke Cham Beckley Sta o DeweY. But the Owls track men did a fine iob despite the frequent loss of key men because of mlurles. This year's team placed second in the Muncie Relays, Delphi Relays, Marion Relays, and the CIC affair. ln dual meets, the Owls drubbed Tipton and Dunkirk while dropping a decision to powerful Richmond. Al Conner boosted his school record in the shot put to 50 feet 33A inches while sophomore Dave Barr broke the school marks in the TOO and 220 yard dashes. Although the track team will lose several good men by graduation, the Owl thinlies should be strong again next year. s--rs me :'.r:.1' :'.':'. ::: I-QI --I CROSS COUNTRY Coach Errol Myers' cross country squad was strong again this year. For the fifth straight season, they captured the CIC Trophy. The future looks brightg only one varsity member is lost by way of diploma. Also Mr. Myers had the most promising freshman crop in Burris history. The under- class crew out-ran Anderson's rhinies, the first defeat for the Indian freshmen in four years. The outstanding feature of the season was an ll-8 victory over Muncie Central, the first win over the Bearcats since an Owl bat-team was started three summers ago. Each class was well represented and even though the team will lose five regulars through graduation, Coach Rudicel will have plenty of able batsmen to fill their places. ' VARSITY COACHES BASKETBALL The l952-53 edition of the Golden Owls of Burris ended with a nine won, fourteen lost record including holiday and sectional tournament play. The season record doesn't tell half the story. After the lone senior survivor from last year's squad was permanently sidelined with iniuries, the Owl congregation became an all underclassmen outfit. Guided by the very able coaching of Rex Rudicel, the young Owls showed outstanding promise against such rugged foes as Gary Froebel, Peru, New Castle, Alexandria, and Muncie Central. What the Owls lacked in finesse, they made up in scrap and spirit. With every man returning next year, the outlook appears bright for the Rudicelmen. The valuable experience gained by the Owls this year should help to develop our Burris club into a state-wide threat by sectional time, 1954. VARSITY BASKETBALL MANAGERS The four managers this year, Dave Orr, Bill Thornell, Tom Bracken, and lave Hart, did a fine iob. Whenever a new pair of socks was needed ar some- tne wanted some tape for an ankle, they were right there on the iob. Dave Jrr and Bill Thornell, who managed the team for the past three years, will be 1issed by all, but with o little help and the experience that they have gained ram these two veterans, Bracken and Hart will be in there pitching again text year. Coach Rex Rudicel was without a doubt faced with his toughest lab since coming ta Burris. Rex obviously tackled the iob successfully, far, in his overhauling operation, he actually created many fine ball players that Burris patrons didn't know existed. Coach Rex is anxious for next season to roll around because he feels a great amount of experience has been absorbed by his green varsity of l952-53. We were glad to have Mr. Gene McCreery back on the Burris coaching staff after an absence of several years. Mac did a fine iob in preparing the Owlets for varsity competition. Many of the Owlets dressed for the varsity off and on throughout the season. Several of these boys look like sure-bets to be wearing Owls uniforms regularly next year. The second team ran up some high scores and set a Burris second team record when they defeated Rushville, 69 to 20. mf 5' fe E Nik cs ee 17 FRESHMAN TEAM With Mr. George Serdula coaching the freshman club again ,this year, the future Owls finished with a 4-8 season. Handicapped by the absence of two of their mates who were seeing varsity and second team action, the rhinies did a good iob in holding their own. A few of the mainstays dressed for several of the second team games. Many of these boys looked like good prospects for future varsity aggregations and should make up the bulk of the Owlet squad next season. EIGHTH GRADE TEAM The Eighth Grade team, also under the guidance of Mr. Serdula, experienced a very rugged season. With only a single victory over Blaine's Hornets, the underclassmen are looking forward to a much brighter season during their fresh- man year. Give these boys a chance to accumulate some height and they are sure to prove a very formidable opponent for next year's foes. -6 Q I 0 A C R Q Q O a Q Qi W .go-uso' 'vu- no A N 25 W i, .. A.. - M . Competition was rugged and the contests gave the boys a chance to let off a little steam. The squad captained by Bob Golliver emerged as the percentage champions in the four-team league. B LEAGUES Also under the sponsorship of Mr. Fisher, the underclassmen who made up the B league of four teams, played once a week. Captains of the teams were Tom Henman, Dave Barr, Don Bezy, and Jerry Kendall, with Henman's team coming out on top in the final standings. The boys fought hard, but good sportsmanship prevailed under Mr. Fisher's supervision. G.A.A. With a growing need for physical as well as mental ability, the girls have become more interested in sports, games, and gymnastics. G.A.A. met each Monday afternoon after school, and the girls enioyed their favorite sports. One of the highlights this year was the Play Day given by the G.A.A., who invited the girls from Royerton, Daleville, Gaston, and DeSoto to participate. We can truthfully say that G.A.A. has done much to build up the mind and body of each girl. CHEERING BLOCK Our students must be complimented on their fine cooperation with the cheer leaders. The cheering block, composed of ninety girls, is to feel honored for the fine showing that they have madefor the school. The block was at all the home games and also went to Elwood to cheer the team on to victory. Much credit must be given to Miss Payne, a new teacher this year, for the fine iob of directing the cheering block. lv ,-Lf' UW I '. 'ttyl' 'fldxl' . l V ,f . ,1 . f 1 .
