Last summer it captured fourth place in the county standings. This is very commendable since it is only the second baseball team Burris has fielded in recent years. 'FX TENNIS With many returning Iettermen and plenty of depth, the Burris tennis team proved to be a strong contender in all meets this year. It includes six Seniors, three Juniors, three Sophomores, and two Freshmen. George Serdula is again the squad mentor. .Sf -M... fu-.Nm 2? , BASKETBALL This year's edition of the Golden Owls was one of the tallest teams to represent Burris on the hardwood in many years. The first five averaged well over six feet tall and the reserve five came very close to the six foot mark. With a season record of I6 wins and 8 losses, the Owls displayed power on many oc- casions and lost only one game on our home floor. Burris finished fourth in the Central lndi- ana Conference championship race. ln Sectional play the Owls advanced to the finals but lost to a fast Central team that went on to win the State Championship. All of the boys played fine ball this sea son and never quit until the final gun. They had that true fighting Burris spirit that carried them through the rough spots. Frank Bracken and Gordon Curry were chosen for the Conference All-Star second team. MANAGERS Veteran basketball managers Dave Orr and Bill Thornell, with the aid of Tom Bracken, were the ones responsible for the teams equipment. They did a swell iob and took a big burden off the coaches' shoulders. VARSITY COACHES Rex Rudicel, varsity basketball coach, and Clayton Henry, sec- ond team coach, again guided their teamsthrough a victorious season. Both these strategists plan to have two more good teams next year, although eight seniors graduate this year. 3 f 938 1 l l X, 2 F 1 is vu, h Duck Emens Keith King ill Adams Gene Partezano Bob Kersey Sid Coats 5'7 VARSITY RECORD 1951-1952 We They 51 Yorktown 31 51 Tipton 45 53 Mishawaka 30 66 New Castle 54 33 Plymouth 28 46 Gary Froebel 50 49 Fort Wayne, S.S. 42 64 Huntington 50 50 Royerton 37 43 Peru 44 47 Richmond 53 51 Wabash 36 47 Alexandria 52 49 Hartford City 39 43 Monticello 48 59 Hagerstown 50 43 Elwood 47 65 Rushville 62 Alexandria Tourney 57 Alexandria 41 43 Elwood 47 Sectional 59 Eaton 36 79 Albany 43 48 Gaston 38 56 Central 71 5 1 ali? Cl NINTH GRADE TEAM Burris had another promising Freshman team this year. The squad, with both height and speed, was well balanced, and should prove to be a good varsity team in the future. Coach George Serdula has done a fine iob in helping to develop the abilities of these boys. The team is credited with 6 wins and 6 losses. Mem- bers pictured, left to right, are, first row-D. They should be plenty tough as a freshman team next year. Coach George Serdula has done a great iob in conditioning his team for future play. Their record was ll won and 'I loss. ' CROSS COUNTRY The hardest working boys in Burris, the cross country team, again had a very successful season. The most important victory ofthe team was the winning of the ClC meet at Peru. This is the fourth consecutive year Burris has won the con- ference meet. Other victories were at Richmond and Mississinewa while the team was defeated by Muncie Central and Indianapolis Technical. Burris was third in the sectional and ninth in the State meet. Losing only three Senior lettermen, Coach Errol Myers predicts that next year's team will again go far. TRACK TEAM Returning lettermen were F. Ernst, Dave Hinckley, T. Gracey, D. Emens, F. Bracken, S. Coats, D. Heironomus, A. Conner, and C. Jaeger. A group of promising boys who should earn letters this year and who bolstered the weak spots of the team were G. Partezana, F. Budd, J. Grover, D. Barr, D. Blanch, Dick Hinckley, S. Fisher, and G. Roberts. This year's track team equalled the fine record set by last year's squad by placing third in the Muncie Relays, second in the Sectional track meet, and taking firsts in both the Delphi Relays and the ClC Meet at Peru. In dual meets the Owls posted wins over Middletown and Mississinewa and ran second to Richmond in a triangular meet. Coach Errol Myers' squad was well balanced in both track and field events. v Up in the air, Junior Birdmonf' Laugh now boys, you'lI sweat later! LEAGUES League basketball proved to be very exciting this year under the super- vision of Mr. Scott Fisher. The boys weren't divided into A and B teams, but worked together as one unit. Although there were fewer members of this organiza- tion than in previous years, the competition was iust as keen and the games as hardfought. A L .. A G.A.A. G.A.A., once again directed by Miss Maria Sexton, was a very active organization this year. Monday night of each week, the athletic facilities were available to all girls wishing to participate in speedball, basketball, volleyball, or baseball, The main function of G.A.A. is not only to develop the skill of its members, but to encourage the best of sportsmanship. A highlight of the volley- ball season was a Burris victory over Royerton. OWN 'M we X swsmsmw if M- G.A.A. They have done a splendid iob of up- holding the good sportsmanship of our school. CHEER BLOCK This year's cheering block continued to do the fine work done in the past years. The block, consisting of ninety girls, was at every home game cheering for their team. The Christmas program, in charge of the Senior members, went off with the usual amount of success. The block didn't go on their usual trip to one of the out-of-town games, but they made a fine showing at the sectionals. The subs did a nice iob of filling in when necessary and we would like to congratulate Miss Sexton for her fine iob of directing. ,cn-4' 5 :YD 440 X A . llllf ki lv 7 '18 EET 'N 9 Wim., gl!
