Being an alumnus, Bernard understood many of our school problems better than we did our- selves. His short stay at Burris created many pleasant memories for all of us. Our best wishes go to Bernard McKenzie. lt was Miss Knotts who guided us during the intermediate years between grade school and high school. She has seen us through many junior high fun nights, reproofs from the office, and those ever- complicated program schedules. She has always dis- played a deep interest in the class of 1950, and we will always have a warm spot in our hearts , for Miss Knotts. WDIZRCLAS SMEN Q Row ' 1 Row Row Row JUNIORS 1... 21 3, 4-. His death was a grievous blow to those of us who knew him. Formerly a student at Lincoln School, Lorne entered Burris in the seventh grade and was already one of the gang at the time he died. M. - Miss Jackson, Teacher JANITORS Without the help of these friendly people, it is doubtful that Burris would have the neat, clean appearance that it does. lf every student knew how hard everyone of these persons worked, he would appreciate all the little things that they do. The school owes a great deal to its ianitors, and the Oracle is proud to have a place for them. We feel that the 'iob they do should never be under- estimated in value, since it is necessary for the efficient running of the school. All the students think highly of the Burris ianitors who are as follows: Mr. Mohler, Mr. and Mrs. Richman, Mrs. Kennedy, and Mr. and Mrs. Van Over. CLQPS ACTIVITIES 41 Y-TEENS F Y-TEEN OFFICERS Left to right Front Row--Mickey Wilkins, Martha Kersey, Jeanenne Baird. Second Row-Barbara Orr, Jeanne Fox, Joan Reynard, Martha Barcus. Third Row-Marilyn Kirshman, Connie Snider, Luella Barr, Milly Baker, Nancy Lineback. Anything from pot lucks to debates provided an evening's activity for the Burris Y-Teens, sponsored by Miss Ruth Dutro. At the beginning of the year an impressive candlelight service was held for the new members The Y Teens h . - ave, as usual, taken an active part in school affairs and service work. Some outstand- ing activities done this year were the Christmas baskets, party for Orphans' Home, d t' ' ecora ing of trees for Ball Hospital, and dances for the school. I Y HONOR SOCIETY ln l94l Burris initiated a chapter of outstanding students into the National Honor Society. This Society is composed of those students who are outstanding in citizenship, scholarship, leadership, and service. The students selected for this honor must 'fulfill certain requirements. Only a certain percentage of the entire class membership may be selected. This year the following were selected: Alan Burkhalter, Martha Barcus, Nancy Clark, Eugene Cramer, Barbara Derrick, Robert Eissman, Richard Green, Sylvia Harlan, William Spencer, Ann Townsend, James Watkins, and Edwin Whinrey. Membership in this organization is highly coveted by any student fortunate enough to receive the honor. A OPTIONAL STUDY HALL Each semester a group of deserving students are chosen from the iunior and senior classes for the honor of receiving Optional Study Hall. The students are voteduponby the faculty members who have them in class, as well as the class sponsors and the principal. The students must be able to study by themselves without disturbing others, and in general, be good citizens. The students given this honor are permitted to study anywhere in the building, so long as they do not disturb other people in doing so. This year Optional Study Hall has been awarded to more people than ever before in the history of the system. SENIOR PLAY Despite the loss of sleep and the nervous moments that many of the seniors went through, everyone was sorry when it was over. On the night of December 2, the Senior Class presented WE SHOOK THE FAMILY TREE. On that day everyone in the senior class was working diligently on some phase of the play-any phase-iust to get out of classes. While the staging and properties committees were doing the last-minute hustling around, painting sets, and gathering properties, the members of the cast were trying 'frantically to learn their lines down to the last letter. Finally it was 8:15-time for the curtain. Everyone backstage seemed calm and serene, at least on the outside, except Mr. Davis, who was feverishly telling iokes to the cast in an effort to avert any nervousness. At a glance it was difficult to tell who was more morried, the cast or Mr. Davis. The cast of WE SHOOK THE FAM- lLY TREE included Jeanenne Baird, Fred Heath, Martha Kersey, Carolyn Sacksted- er, Martha Barcus, Bill Bryan, Jim Good- en, Nancy Tuhey, Sylvia Harlan, Phil Mor- ris, Jim Watkins, and Ann Townsend. No one person was responsible for the success of the production. With the fine direction of Mr. J. Leonard Davis, and the help of Mr. Peterson of the Arts Department on sets, and the co-operation of the entire faculty and members of the Class of 1950, it was destined to be the delightful success that it was. 'inaug- SENIOR PLAY PRACTICE Mr. Davis: All right kidsl Let's gol Jeanenne, you're on. And on your speech upon the chair, don't talk in such a sing-songy tone. Do it like this --lEditor's note: Mr. Davis proceeds to enact this dramatic scene with all his hidden ability.j ' Mr. Davis: Fred, if you're going to kiss Martha when you come on stage, then kiss herl Don't iust pretend like itl And Martha, for heavens sake on the night of the play don't duck like you have been doing. Whewl What is that horrible odor? Don't tell me you still have that same fish backstage, Bill? Bill: SureI We can't afford one for each night, so l'll iust have to use this one. Mr. Davis: What am I going to do with Jeanenne nowl She still can't say 'prohibition.' Now try it again, gall Jeanenne: UPROHIBITION. Was that right this time? Mr. Davis: Bless you, childl It was a struggle, but you finally said it. There were so many things to remember about the play practices that made it so much fun for everyone in spite of the work involved First there was the time when Martha Kersey forgot one of her cues, and poor Bill was left on the stage crying despairingly: HeathcIiff-Oh HeathcIiff. Of course one couldn't forget Nancy Tuhey's cute knees in her short, ruffly dress, or the squeels of half-laughter, half-surprise at the dress rehearsal for the elementay grades when Bill Bryan came dashing down the stairs in his flashy blue-and-white-striped shorts. Phil, who had to wear knickers in the play, was called Short-Pants Freddie even long after the play was over, and no doubt suffered much teasing A from the elementary students. ' if F, V V' It was during the all-day rehearsal that .in n. Mr. Davis said, Well girls, Iet's get something U' g fn to eatl So off they went to Orv's for lunch. If fs. rf., you know Mr. Davis's car iThe term is used FI' A QR looselyl, it is easy to imagine seven girls with ,I-Q, lik hamburgers and milkshakes piled in a heap, and -1 1 .W ' snow flying in through the back window which is vacant of glass. Here are iust a few words left to all under- classmen by all the seniors who worked on the play: When you have spent several nights with- out much sleep worrying, when you are smeared from head ta foot with paint from the freshly- painted sets, when you've almost lost your voice in going over and over your lines, or when at the last minute you've forgotten a vital property for the play, you may wonder if it's reall'y worth it. But take it from us, that's what makes it fun, and you'll be sorry, as we were, when it's over. BOOKSTORE During the past year the bookstore did an excellent iob of supplying the students and faculty of Burris with other necessary articles. For the bookstore, and then the keys were of the year. Managers of the bookstore and iuniors, Pat Juett and Wiley paper, pencils, notebooks, rulers, crayons, and first six weeks the senior class managed the turned over to the iunior class for the remainder were: seniors, Martha Barcus and Gene Cramer, Spurgeon. PROJECTIONISTS The Burris Proiection Club, now in its second year, is a valuable asset to the school. Under the direction of Mr. Aikins, the members render a valuable service in showing films to classes. Each member has passed a course that quali- fies him as a proiectionist. Then he may show films, slides, and other visual aids to different classes. Usually students use their study halls to' show their pictures. A schedule was put on a bulletin board, to keep the proiectionists well informed. Our hat's off for a iob well done by such a group of students. Mid-Century Melodies was the name given to the annual Junior-Senior Reception Banquet and Dance held on March 24. The dinner, by candlelight was served at 6:30 o'clock in the Burris social rooms, with Mike Greicus acting as toastmaster. After the welcome address was given by Allen McCormick, Junior preident, and the response was given by Tom Cougill, Senior president, the traditional Prophecy cmd Will were presented by the Juniors and Seniors respectively. Following the dinner, Bill Allan and his orchestra played for the Reception Dance at Recital Hall from 9 t ol2 o'clock. The black backdrop curtain accentu- ated the mica-studded letters of pastel shades. The executive committees in charge of the dance and banquet were as follows: Juniors-Allen McCormick, Warren Beebe, Milly Baker, and Jim Wolf. Seniors--Tom Cougill, Pat Doyle, Jim Gooden, and Pat Snodgrass. Other commit- tee chairmen were as follows: Prophecy, Sue Wuthrich, Will, Maraby Bentz, Dec- orations, Jeanne Fox, Tickets, Dale Boyd, and Programs, Carolyn Dunkin. Junior-SeniorReception Banquet and Dance HALLOWE'EN PARTY The night of October 3 was an occasion of suspense and hilarity. The annual all-school Hallowe'en party presented itself in all the gory glory of the holiday. lncluded in the gala affair were such events as the tug-o'-war, the costume iudging, the sideshows, the midway, and last but not least, the scary Hallowe'en movie. As to be ex- pected, everyone had a glorious time viewing the original and unique costumes, enioying the chills and thrills of Sleepy Hollow, trying his skill at the contests, and shivering throughout the movie. Classes came too soon the next morning, but need- less to say, there will be many more of these fun and frolic parties. HALLOWE'EN PARTY A Q , i i BOY AND CUB SCOUTS Troop 33, Boy Scout troop at Burris, has been very active this year. Darby Blackwood, a Burris alumnus, is Scoutmaster. Other officers are: Assistant Scoutmasters, Don McPeek and Drake Omstead, Junior Assistant Scoutmasters, Warren Beebe and Jim McCreery, and Senior Patrol Leaders, Bill Shott and Jim Wagner. There are fifty-three Boy Scouts at Burris. The Cub Pack at Burris has ninety-two members, and is under the leader- ship of Mr. Joe Stipp. Burris has reason to be proud of its Scout organizations and for their fine accomplishments. 00, I 3 if 5,0 QI J GIRL SCOUTS As the Oracle goes to press, the Girl Scouts have iust started their annual cookie sale. This is but one of the many proiects carried on by the Girl Scouts at Burris. For the first time in several years, there is no Senior Scout troop, but the number of Intermediate Scouts and Brownies has increased until there are now four Intermediate and three Brownie troops at Burris. At their weekly meetings at the school, girls learn things in each of the ten fields of Girl Scouting and earn badges in these same fields. During the year, several trips were made by various troops to the Little House at the Fairgrounds There the girls can have parties, give plays, and do day camping. Leaders of the Burris troops are Mrs. Van Hinkley, Mrs. H. D. Jenkins, Mrs. F. E. Kirshman, Mrs. L. G. Montgomery, Mrs. Earl Parsons, Mrs. Robert Hamilton, Mrs. R. F. Bevens, Mrs. Milton Latsha, Mrs. Robert Dorste, Mrs. Harold Reeves, Mrs. Clarence W. Morgan, Mrs. R. S. Burkhart, Mrs. Louis Fisher, and Mrs. C. C. Gable. I X I 'NCQ SPANISH CLUB The Spanish Club, under the direction of Miss Wood, has enioyed another successful year. The purpose of the Spanish Club is to acquaint its members with the customs and culture of Spanish-speaking countries. The club held meetings every month on Latin-American and Spanish holidays. The big events of the year were the initiation banquet, held in coniunction with the French Club on January 5, and the Pan-American Day carnival. At Christmas time the Spanish, Latin, and French students went caroling together. Club officers for the year were: First semester-.lim Gooden, president, Nan Morgan, vice-president, Sally Alexander, secretary, Joe Davis, treasurer, Mildred Bossemeyer, reporter, and Marilyn Kirshman, pianist. Second semester: Dave Dewey, president, Shelia Broderick, vice-president, Sue Boyle, secretary, Fred Heath, treasurer, Carolyn Winick, reporter, Marilyn Kirshman, pianist, Jerry Maddox and Nan Morgan scrap-book artists. elgiiii 33335522 FRENCH CLUB The Burris French Club has another interesting and profitable year to add to its history. The monthly meetings gave its members many different and valuable views of France and French speaking countries. The initiation banquet was held on January 5. John Malevitch, a college student, received the piece of gateau de rois which contained the token, thereby making him king. He chose Milly Baker to be his queen. The French Club participated in a radio program. Nilda Bordon, Alan Kiger, and Ann Townsend took the affirmative side of the question, Resolved: French ls a More Useful Second Language Than Spanish. The French Club took an active part in presenting a Carnival fun night. The sidewalk cafe lent a great deal of reality to the setting. Club officers for the first semester were as follows: Ann Townsend, pres- ident, Nilda Bordon, vice-president, Mildred Baker, secretary, and Allen McCor- mick, treasurer. The second semester officers were as follows: Mary Ellen Voisard, president, Carolyn Dunkin, vice-president, Judy Hazelton, secretary, and Mary Ann Magoon, treasurer. Miss Mary Elizabeth Wood is the sponsor. iii! F. T. A. Every Wednesday noon a large group of high school students met in either Miss Mary Elizabeth Wood's room or the main speaker's room to hear different points on the teaching field. After the business meetings the members adiourned to the cafeteria for lunch. The 'F.T.A. members have helped the teachers of Burris in all ways they can. F.T.A. members acted as guides and hostesses on Education days. Last fall F.T.A., with the Choir and the help of Bob Weiser, a college student, gave-a convocation entitled Ballad for Americans. The officers participated ,in a radio program this spring. The program was devoted to the discussion of the club affairs. Officers for the year were as follows: Carolyn Dunkin, president, Paul Slick, vice-president, Sylvia Harlan, secretary, and Sue Wuthrich, treasurer. vi -sr' ORACLE STAFF HEADS Here are the big-wheels of this year's Oracle staff. ln the front row are Martha Barcus, circulation manager, Barbara Derrick, make-up co'-editor, Jean Bossemeyer, picture department, Alan Burkhalter, editor-in-chief, Joan Rey- nard, make-up co-editor, and Nancy Tuhey, girls' sports editor. The back row includes Dick Green, boys' sports editor, Jim Watkins, business manager, Alan Kiger, art editor, Bill Bryan, publicity chairman, and Bob Eissman, photography department head. Under the guidance of these responsible people, the Oracle was assembled and sent to the printers. THE ORACLE STAFF This bunch of hard working young men and women comprise the Oracle Staff of l950. This yearbook is what it is because each and every one of the staff spent time and effort in making it. The staff has worked like one happy family, and no one person is responsible for its success. Many of the seniors helped with the Oracle and received no direct credit, however, the staff deeply appreciated their help. The entire staff deserves the credit for the l95O Oracle. A good word should be said in behalf of Mr. Davis and other teachers who helped the staff in their labors. The staff was grateful for any help that was received from anybody. They worked hard, and this Oracle is the result. ,mg . as i vs, xnwir OWL STAFF The Class of 1951 has done an excellent iob of keeping Burris students and faculty informed and amused this year through the Burris Owl. The Owl, which came out every month, was packed with interesting information. Again this year one was able to subscribe to the Owl and to have his copy delivered to him during the 3 o'clock hour. Congratulations to the Owl staff, to the Junior Class, and to Miss Helen Kientzle, advisor for their excellent work in bringing out the Owl in T950. Members of this year's staff were Judith Hazelton and Duncan Magoon, editors Paul Miller, business manager, Carolyn Dunkin, and Barbara Orr, proof- readers, Jerry Maddox, art editor, Judith Barkdull and Joe Davis, make-up editors, Carolyn Henderson and Bob Guy, sports editors, Jeanne Fox, feature editor, Lou Ann Moore, Marietta Brewer and Joan McCarthy, elementary editors, Norma Dick, exchange editor, Milly Baker, alumni editor, and Dale Boyd, circulation manager. QW STUDENT COUNCIL The purposes of the Burris Student Council are to promote student par- ticipation and student co-operation in the schooI's government, to foster school spirit, to encourage higher scholastic attainment, to promote good will among students and between students and the faculty, to encourage growth in good citizenship, and to co-ordinate school activities. The Council is composed of thirteen members-three seniors, three iuniors, two sophomores, two freshmen, one eighth grader, one seventh grader, and! one sixth grader. This year the Council performed its regular duties such as collecting money for various causes and sponsoring school functions. Also it put out a handbook which will be a great help to incoming students and freshmen. On April 15, several members attended a Student Council Conference at Bloomington. Officers for the year were as follows: Dave Galliher, president, Warren Beebe, vice-president, Barbara Orr, secretary, and Joan Reynard, treasurer. Miss Angie Wilson is sponsor of this organization. SAFETY PATROL like the postman, the Safety Patrol boys serve in any type of weather. Rain or shine, they give heir time to make the street crossings safe for young and old alike. The white belt worn by these boys serves as a warning to motorists to take extra care, for small school children will be crossing there. They are also a reminder to the older high school folks to set a good example tor the youngsters. The Safety Patrol program is sponsored by the Muncie Police De- partment, under the direction of popular Al Guzzi. Miss Alice Rose Carr is the Burris Sponsor, and she deserves much credit for the fine organization she has built. 1 , . s ' 'P .... ' 1 ,... .. 1. , .. .,.., BAND Members of the Band must rise early to get to rehearsals, held twice weekly at 8 o'clock in the morning. Activities of the Band during the year included playing at the basketball games, at Commencement, and in the Spring Concert. In addition to this, there are soloists and ensembles entered in the state contest. The Band, which is comprised of about forty members, is under the direction of Mr. James Davidson. D I In ORCHESTRA This year the orchestra has been under the direction of Miss Helen Masha. The twenty-eight members of the orchestra, ranging from grades seven through twelve, meet for rehearsals every Tuesday and Thursday morning at 8 o'clock. In spite ot the fact that the orchestra meets only twice a week, it has presented fine pertormances from time to time throughout the year. The orchestra played a part in a number of convocations besides their portion in the annual spring concert. Special mention should be given to the four string ensembles from the orchestra who look part in the state music contest. After winning in the district contest here at Burris, they returned from the state contest a Terre Haute with two firsts and two seconds. . 'L g . 0 hx , . It has participated in several school convocations and outside activities. Among those activities was a concert directed by the student teachers. Mr. Gustafson enioyed his first year at Burris, and although the Choir was small, he directed the group in some excellent singing, and deserves much credit. Good luck to him in the years to come. Special attention should be given to the vocal quartette, which won second ranking in the state music contest. Members of this quartette were Bill Bryan, Barbara Needham, Alan Burkhalter, and Milly Baker. ' ---gg..-.-....,.,, L ,.. Under the leadership of Miss Maria Sexton, the block has continued to be one of the best in the state. At Christmas, the block gave a splendid per- formance, using flashlights. Our thanks go to Joyce Waugh, Mona and Martha Daugherty, Fred Waugh, and Bond Leonard for the swell iob of leadership they gave as cheerleaders. 0 Q yo CROSS COUNTRY Front row-Eldon Black, Fred Waugh, Jerry Larkey, and Bill Furrow. Buck row-Bill Spencer, Paul Slick, Jerry Minnick, Allen McCormick, and coach Errol Myers. The 1949 edition of the cross country team experienced the best season ever completed by Burris harriers. Coach Puppy Myers' boys took three firsts and four seconds, and placed tenth in the l. H. S. A. A. state meet. The Burris distance runners also won the C. l. C. cross country crown for the second straight year. Orfthis year's team there were five seniors and three iuniors. TRACK TEAM The Owls were loaded with veteran trackmen for the i950 season. At this writing it appears that the team should be strong in the distance events, the relays, the pole vault, and the broad iump. Burris will present a well-balanced attack in attempting to vanquish its opponents, as several talented underclassmen candidates show promise of strengthening the team at various weak points. The schedule includes meets against some of the state's strongest squads, and other strong adversaries will be met in the sectional, regional, and state meets. Mr. Errol Myers, coach of the team, has turned out several strong outfits in the past, and this year the boys will undoubtedly live up to former standards. TOM COUGILL Big Tom, the likable senior forward, proved to the opposition that he could stop their top scorers as well as score in his own right. A knee iniury forced Tom to see limited action during the last part of the season, but he always did his best lwhich was mighty finel when playing .for the Owls. This was T, C.'s fourth year as a varsity letterman. PAUL SLICK The all - conference IC. l. C.l center of the Owls proved his merit in many a ball game. His under -the - basket sorties pulled the team out of several tight sit- uations, and his ball- hawking under the boards also came in handy. Paul came off second best in a bout with a buzz-saw, but he returned to action in time to be of assistance in the sectional. BILL BALES The tall, lanky senior proved his ability near the end of the season. BilI's one-handed push shot and fighting spirit was iust the shot in the arm needed by our fightin' Owls. He is a senior and will be great- ly missed next year. 2' 5' 3557 is at fig.-fs- ite' l 1 i E. .K- SN ,B 4 X This year's basketball team two seniors, Bob Eissman and Dick Gen Dale Boyd, a iunior, completed his deserve much credit for their hard W the season a success. WARREN BEEBE Here's a boy who should scare next year's opponents. Warren can shoot from the far court or break under for o lay-up with equal facil- ity. The likable towheod gave the Owls the fig ht and spark needed to win several close games. He has also been a member of the 8th grade, 9th grade, and s e co n d teams. JACK HELDENIRAND Fudge is a iunior who played guard on this year's Owls and was a big help. He showed top-notch defen- sive play and proved to be a scrapper. Jack should be a very cap- able member of next year's squad. GORDON CURRY Although the baby of the team, Gordon proved his ability to DICK McGREW Dick, an up and com- ing 6'2 iunior center, demonstrated his powers in snagging the much- needed rebounds during the past campaign. He was a great asset to the team when in there ploy- ing for ol' B.H.S. Dick will undoubtedly be an important cog in next year's hardwood ma- chine. JACK DEAL Jack played his first year of varsity ball this year. The tall, slender forward showed that when he fired his right handed hook shot from way out, he meant busi- ness. .lack is only a iunior and should be a big help to next year's squad. hold his own. His sharp shooting and ball hand- ling was a great asset to the Owls, and he will be of great value to future aggregations. t - i VARSITY BASKETBALL This year's edition of the fighting Owls showed that true, valiant spirit which has become a tradition of all Burris athletic machines. Handicapped when man-mountain Paul Slick suffered a lacerated finger, the team nevertheless hung up a highly creditable record, The statistics show fourteen wins and eight losses. This includes an eleven-seven record for the regular season, a sweep of the Elwood New Year's Tourney, and, after defeating Albany in their first game of the Sectional, a heart-breaker, to an inspired Harrison ball-club. The Owls finished second to Peru's Tigers in the Central Indiana Confer- ence championship race, winning seven games and succumbing to Peru and Hunt- ington by a combined total margin of seven points. Senior Paul Slick and Joe Salyer, a iunior guard, were chosen on all-conference fives. That the team was composed of more than five players was evidenced by the capable relief work turned in by the reserves. This depth of material will undoubtedly pay dividends next year. Although there were only three seniors on the 1949-50 team, they will be sorely missed. Next year, big Paul Slick and work-horse Tom Cougill won't be pulling the ball off the boards, and Bill Bales won't be driving under for tricky one-handers. Even without these boys, however, the talented underclass- men have shown great promise for another good team in the coming hardwood campaigns. i if t 3 i G'J LT 6If viklffzr' RTW X t . ff a ,O 33 SECOND TEAM This year's Owlets finished their season with an 8-won and 9-lost record, but most of the losses were by close scores. Coach Clayton Henry did a fine iob with the squad in his first year as coach. Two of the boys, King and Coats, proved themelves very able and saw limited action with the varsity. We are sure many of this year's Owlets will prove very valuable to the Owls in the coming years. Mr. Scott E. Fisher directed the boys' activities two nights per week, supplemented by games in the gym classes whenever possible. Captains of the teams were Bob Eissman, Dave Galliher, Dick Green, Phil Morris, Don Rench, Wayne Day, and Dick Geiger. Eissman's team was victorious in the final standings of both rounds. Sports included in the intramural program this year were football, basket- ball, and baseball. Credit must be given to Mr. Fisher for the way in which he conducted the contests. Competition was keen and the games were hard-fought, but under Mr. Fisher's supervision, good sportsmanship prevailed B LEAGUES Hold it! Grad 'im! Way to fire! Such gentlemanly remarks as these might be heard coming from the gym an time a B League intramural basketball game was in session. The B Y leagues were also under the supervision of Mr. Fisher. The 8th and 9th grade boys followed a two-round schedule, with action two nights weekly. Teams Il Collins and Jack Bateman tied for the championship. Other team captains were Secrest, Daily, and Comer. These contests give the fellows a chance to blow off a little steam, and there is always a possibility that talent might develop for future Owl aggregations. captained by Bi G. A. A.
