The publication of this, the volume of the Burrillville High School Review, indicates progress and success. It is a record of our joys, experiences, and achievements, it is a souvenir for future reference and pride, it is a monument of our sincere gratitude to the patient teachers, and our sacrificing parents. Itfis our earnest wish that our readers enjoy this book which contains many memories that were the personal realization of the Class of 1949. Sweeney, our beloved Superinten- dent of Schools. Having completed thirtyQnine years of loyal service, he in now retiring. As he carried out his duties quietly and unassumingly, his friendly presence in our school was always deeply felt by each and every one of us. No salary could fully repay him for his invaluable services to the Town of Burrillville. His efforts have resulted in our town,s having one of the best school systems in the state. Although he has frequently had to perform many duties not specihcally relegated to his position he has never been heard to complain. A devoted fan of our school's athletic teams, he has been richly rewarded, by seeing the prestige of Burrillville High School in the Rhode Island schoolboy sport world so magniiicently elevated. We hope that his going into retirement will not end his interest in our school system for his mellowed sagacity could most probably be of invaluable assistance to the new administration. To you, Mr. Sweeney, we wish many pleasant memories of your association with our school system. Each individual member of this grad- uating class, the underclasses, and the 'faculty wishes to express his sincere appreciation for all you have done. NVe are sure that you will be a guiding light of inspiration to us in our future years. 6 Mu. josEPH C. SWEENEY SuPam1N'i'tNonNT OF SCHOOLQ DR. VVILLIAM L. CALLAHAN PRINCIPAL I extend my congratulations to every member of the Class of 1949 on the successful completion of his course. Smith It was with profound sorrow that we received the shocking news of the death of Ronald H. Smith, a promising freshman and model student. Ron- nie's', life, though less than IS years, was snuffcd out by a tragic blow on the head by a line drive incurred while playing baseball. He died of this blow three days later, and was buried Monday, May 16. He will be sadly missed by all of us. We extend, to his grieving parents and his sister Barbara, our deepest sympathy. On September 10, 1945, we climbed aboard the great ship that had been christened Class of Nineteen Hundred and Forty-Nine. Our crew of one hundred and forty-five was captained by Miss Barwick, who has brought us through many a storm. We enlisted for a non-stop trip of four long years, with the deter- mination that the ship would dock in June, 1949. In spite of many storms we are now nearing our destination. During our trip we have helped to keep Burrillville High School in the limelight. The finest of Burrillville's athletes have come from our crew. We have participated in all sports, winning the Class C Champion- ship in football for four years, State Championship in Hockey for two years and the State Championship in baseball in 1948. Members of our crew have ranked high in scholarships. As we are about to finish our course we have twellty'-Ol'1C in the R. I. Honor Society. As for our social life, when we were green Froshv and wise Sophs, we did nothing. In October of our junior year we had a Halloween Dance, which proved very successful. In our senior year we had a few dances, including a Get Acquainted Dancef' 'Tall Promf' Christmas Party, and a Spring Prom. In April, 1949, we put forth our best efforts in making the senior play, Little Jimmie Jones, one of the best ever. Ella Phillips was chosen Best Citizen of the D. A. R. and will receive a pin at graduating exercises. Some of our crew took part in the Model Legislature at the State House and the Model Congress which was held at Kingston. Bernard carried for 427 yards with an axerage of 10.2 yards per carry, the third highest in this department in the school's history. Fisher caught 14 passes to gain 277 yards and set another school record. No one of the indi- vidual players reaily deserves any extra praise because of the outstanding spirit of teamwork and self- sacrifice exhibited by each and every member of the squad, but these fellows were a little bit better than the average. Subsequent classes at B.H.S. have the admirable goal of maintaining the high standards for sports- manship and proficiency that this year's squad has helped to establish. Sparked hy the defending of Leo Duggy Kraunelis, they ran up a string of 20 consecutive victories hefore losing to a star-studded Brown lfieshman team in overtime. 'l hey presented an unetlualletl starting forward line comprised of Ed Allard, .lim Wliite, and Ray Bernard, and a hardly less formidable 2nd line of jack Torpey, Boh Ducharme, and Larry Gingell. Don Menard and Doggy Kraunelis made up the hest defense comhination in the league, while capahle Ducky LaPorte guarded the drapes. XX'ith Bill Fisher and Ernie Lange adding their talents in relief roles they didn't face a team that was equally well balanced all year. They downed a talented LaSalle sextet fOt1l' times hut the most noteworthy victories were those over the Dartmouth College Freshmen and the West Point Plehes. The only dark spot on an otherwise successful season was a 2 to l defeat at the hands of a capahle Notre Dame team from Berlin, New Hampshire in the New England Playoffs. The Yearhook staff joins the rsiudt-nt hody in offering congratulations to the hockey team and their coach, Mr. Eccleston, for such a successful season and extend to them our hest wishes for another hanner season next year. 5 4 - Q Corea FOOTBALL SCORES- 1948 SEASON B.
