OPPONENT SCORE BURRELL Ford City Valley Kittaning Highlands St. Joseph's Ford City Valley Kittaning Highlands St. Joseph's OW - WH WOW F NN PN |= SH NY AND = Expectations were running high that second week of August as the girls of the Burrell tennis team began practicing. Under the di- rection of coach Paul Shiring, the girls had an eventful season. Team captain Jamie Mattiioli and her sister Cassie, along with Kristen Collodi and team MVP Susan Renda, represented the team in the WPIAL Doubles play-offs. Unfortunately, to the team’s disappoint- ment, they did not qualify for the WPIAL Team play-offs with their record of 2-8. But the record does not represent the entire picture as each match had its own story of hard fought victories or disheartening defeats. Girls’ Tennis Left. GIRLS’ TENNIS. Front: J. Greenaway, M. a “—— m= sarek SS lees Te ° op: Brian McNally contemplates his next shot. Fall sports are o ften dominated by football; however, this year’s boys golf team’s record surpassed the winning season of the football team. The golf team, led by newcomer exchange student Achim Heimer, juniors Todd Spires and Shawn Donley, and soph- omores Kevin Crum and Steve Surma, had an impressive season, finishing with a section record of 8-2. Their winning record pro- vided them with the opportunity to compete in the W.P.I.A.L. play-offs. Unfortunately, their chance was snuffed out with a de- feat from Butler. Although the team was not able to advance farther, one member did get that chance. Senior Achim Heimer swept through indivi- dual section play, until losing the opportunity to continue to the state finals by one stroke. Coach Phil Malobicky had these words to say, ‘! am proud of this year’s team; they're a good bunch.” It was a fine season for the boys as they have started a winning tradition.
