He flashes a grin that reveals a not-so- perfect set of pearly whites, stuffs his hands deeper into the pockets of the dress—for- success pants that contrast with the dou- ble-breasted jacket, and squints. His first joke has just bombed—it’s a typical night, and this episode of “Late Night with David Letterman’’ promises spectacular viewing. Viewer Mail, Stupid Pet Tricks, Dropping Stuff from a Ten-Story Tower—all hall- marks of Letterman, the nightowl hero of procrastinators who would rather watch his show than study. Beginning at 12:30 AM and lasting for an hour, Lettermen’s program intersplices dialogue from guests he roasts from behind his desk, while gulping mugfuls of Perrier and non-sensical skits. A tour of director Al Frish’s refrigerator could be the norm one evening, or audiences who recount “Brushes With...‘ stupidity, greatness, or the law, being rewarded with an NBC sponge or collapsible cup.
