Music Makers at Mid-Time The marching band headed to the hottest south for the coolest jazz to bring Bourbon Street to halftime, in the high- stepping, laid-back “St. Louis Women’’. The 80-member squad strutted and wailed in antics that cut the field, then showed their diversity in the placid Orien- tal tones and harmony of ‘Anything Goes’’. The brass section trumpeted the fast-paced ‘“‘Wake Me Up’, and the drums sounded to the pulsating Spanish accompaniment ‘'Mirada’’. The group spent the last week of August at band camp, perfecting drills and learn- ing numbers, culminating at a parade in Kennywood. Student director Don Ross and Karen Orkis, working closely with Mr. Lagoon and Mr. Farinelli, perfected their conducting skills for the games. The band, known for imparting spirit at away games, continued the tradition with con- fetti, kazoos and an exuberant drum section. Right: Break time for the band. MARCHING BAND: Front: C. Quarles, D. Steppin’ Out The majorettes with flouting, flirtatious skirts and ground-sweeping capes, strut- ted through a smoky jazz-filled opener of St. Louis Women. Then, they became Betty Boop flappers for the 1920's Five Foot Two. Their half-time performances were the results of early-morning prac- tices. Under the direction of Head Sarah Yost and Co-Head Sandy Mittereder, the girls took tedious, summer hours to perfect their routines. However, not everything was hard work as the new members ex- perienced the trials and tribulations of initiation, and then the unity of Spirit Week. MAJORETTES. Front: S. Yost, S. Mittereder; Sec- ond Row: M. Wolfe, S. Pallone, J. Gulick, C. Lasher, R. Solomon, D. Alfonsi, K. Giordano; Back: A. Lingenfelter, A. Frederick, A. Stewart, L. Wick, J. Mazur, J. Larrow, L. Rovnanik; Missing: N. Marine, A. Fick. Above: Senior Majorettes and their parents. ‘Above: Real crowd pleasers. 122 Activities
