cd — i ‘ as eS © ull Politics at BHS The 1984 class officer speeches were unique this year. Anyone who wanted to be class officer—President, Vice President, Secretary—had to make a speech in front of his entire class. In the Senior Class Officer speeches, Jim Bistline ‘ve a very rousing speech. He never said what he planned on doing as Senior Class ‘resident; instead, he talked about how jreat America is. The amazing part of this tory is that Jim’s speech was so good that he soundly defeated his opposing candidates in the election. The Junior Class Officer candidates also used visual aids and good at- tention getters in their speeches. Tim Matson, Treasurer candidate, brought a sack with a dollar sign printed on it as his visual Treasurer, or aid so that people would remember his name when voting for Treasurer. Brad McGuire, Presidential candidate, brought in a bicycle horn to give the speeches more of a convention-type atmosphere. Brad had big competition with Presidential candidate Mike Marra. Mike took the microphone and walked around the stage as he gave his speech. BHS nearly had a riot on hand as he got the Juniors to stomp their feet and clap their hands in a rhythmic beat while he sang a song. These methods must all be ef- fective because Tim Matson became Treasur- er, Brad McGuire become President, and Mike Marra became Vice-President. Sopho- more and Freshmen candidates used posters and buttons to get publicity.
