I s a student teacher. Burrell High School receives all of their student teachers from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. When college students in the School of Education reach their senior year, the entire area of con- centration consists of classroom observa' tion and, for a semester period, actual teaching in the classroom. The student teacher is required to study the teaching methods of several instructors, plan les- sons, and apply theory and creativity to their classroom vvork. Music-An Outlet for Expression . .sf r ' V ei 1 7 in ig, 4 I I 1 Y 1 ir 1 xi: Mr. Stephen Skoriia and Mr. James Lagoon, Jr. The Music Department gives students at Burrell the opportunity to not only increase their musical knowledge, but en- joy it and express themselves at the same time. The courses offered, which include Mixed Choir, Girls' Chorus, Band, Harmo ny 84 Theory, and Music Appreciation, supply the basis for both individuality and group effort in making the calss en- joyable and beneficial to all involved. Mr. Skorija leads the choir at a school assembly. Directed by Mr. Lagoon, the marching band adds enthusiasm at BurreIl's football games.

Vocational Courses at Burrell Offer pvniarmef-awww -a at ,.tWaMe..W,.:M. Q A special program at Burrell is Occupational Education, taugh by lVlr. Robert Devine. The primary aim of this course is to guide students in becoming contributing members in society. Aside from on-the-job training, students take important academic sub- jects needed for a comfortable and satisfying future. Because most of the Occupational Education students plan to obtain jobs upon leaving school, the area of study is concentrated toward thi' goal rather than toward a college preparatory type of program. ,J nd lVlr. Robert Devi ne Distributive Education is a tvvo-year course offered at Burrell for those students whose interests lie in the fields of business and retailing. Special training begins in grade eleven when students .. ... . , . take the Marketing 84 Sales course along with other required sub- jects. This introduces the prospective business employees with the V basic knowledge needed for the outside business world. When stu- . dents reach the twelfth grade, they are able to put their theoreti- hi, 5 cal knowledge to actual practice by working in area retailing stores for a half-day along with continued instruction of merchan- l dising and management principles in the class room.
