James Brackin Business Manager . g ubbk A The duties of the School Board are to direct the operations of if t all the schools in the Burrell School District. Q Mr. White, Superintendent of Schools, oversees the entire Mr. Frank Pallone Coordinator of Special Services school district which includes seven schools. He also serves as executive officer of the Board of Education. The Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Huston, is primarily con- cerned with curriculum, although he has numerous other duties. As Business Manager and Secretary to the Board of Education lVlr. Smith is responsible for all the financial affairs of the school district. Mr. Brackin serves as Assistant to the Superintendent. His du- ties include the direction of evening classes, personnel services, attendance, transportation, and home and school visitation. Mr. Pallone is the Special Services Coordinator. He ascertains all available resources for state and federally-funded programs. He is director of public relations, chairman of the business edu- cation department, and is responsible for all business equipment in the district. The principal's task is of primary importance to the functioning of a ' N a high school. lVlr. Nloses' duties consist of hiring personnel, observ- , ' ing classes, and directing the Senior High as a whole. It is his duty to see that Bu rrell's present standards are maintained and improved upon. As Assistant Principal, Nlr. Geroge's job is one which covers the entire scope of student life at Burrell. His duties range from activities li.e. assemblies, clubs, etc.l to attendance and behavioral problems. Sewing in a recently instituted post, lVlr. Haser is the Athletic Director for the Burrell School District. Some of his many duties include booking all sports schedules, hiring all officials, referees, etc., providing bus transportation to and from the games, prepar- ing the season budgets for all sports, and purchasing and manag- ing all the athletic equipment. Since the sports program is a major part of most schools, lVlr. Haser's job is very vital to such a large district. ff? Mr. Robert L. These ladies are very efficient and are helpful to both faculty and students. ln the library, Mrs. Karsten and Mrs. Kowalik are always ready to lend their services. The many resources, including books, periodicals, and microfilm, pro- vide each student with the opportunity to study any area of interest in depth. Important Personnel Provide Much Mr. William Hajel Guidance Director The Guidance Department is an indis' pensible one at any school, and Burrell is no exception. Aside from aiding students in getting jobs, planning for future educa- tion, and administering necessary tests, the counselors' job is also one of giving advice to the student. This year, Burrell's guidance department began a unique pro- gram to help influence non-college bound students toward vocational training as a possible choice after completing high school. The school nurse's job is to maintain high health standards among all the stu- dents at Burrell. The enormous task of keeping individualized health records of each student is also essential. Annual see- ing and hearing tests are administered along with a heightfweight check. Meanwhile back at the cafeteria . . . An everyday occurence at Burrell. Our dietician, Mrs. Elizabeth Vargo, provides the Burrell School District with a well-balanced menu. The cafeteria staff does excellent work in preparing and serv- ing the meals at lunchtime. Mr. Cal Borland helps to keep Burrell High in great shape. The job of Mr. Borland and the other custodians is a greatly diversi- fied one because, as Mr. Borland puts it, We do a little bit of everything. The English Department at Burrell undoubtedly ranks high among neighbor- ing schools. ln addition to general and college prep courses required on all grade levels, Honors English is offered to those students who show special interest and talent in literature and writing. Advanced Placement English, offered only on the twelfth grade level, gives the most gifted students a chance to complete the equiv- alent of a college freshman English course by taking a standardized test at the end of the year. Over the years, the curriculum has expanded to include an impressive and varied list of electives including speech, drama, logic, and journalism for those students who wish to gain a full scope of English in its diversified forms. QQ ff. xx Scientifically speaking, Burrell High of- fers a useful variety of courses for the inter- ested student. The choice of studies includes Regular Biology, BSCS, Biology ll, Regular Chemistry, Chem Study, Chemistry Il, Regu- lar Physics, PSSC, Earth 84 Space Science, and Nuclear Science. The Mathematics Department prepares students for many jobs in fields such as engineering, architecture, and the ever-expanding computer industry. The General Math course provides an overall understanding of basic mathematics. Other courses include Algebra I and ll, Geom- etry, and Advanced Algebra 84 Trigonometry. The Fifth Year Math course lMathematicaI Analysis Honorsl goes even deeper into the subject of Math and prepares the student for higher math such as Calculus. Miss Lege explains the fundamentals of Trigonometry. Beth Parks consults Mr, Matisko on a math problem. a Wide Varielg of Skills Although the main purpose of the business department is to enable students to obtain business positions upon leaving school, a number of these courses can help all students gain practical knowledge which can be utilized in virtually any pro- fession, such as typing and shorthand. There are three separate divisions in the business course: clerical, bookkeeping, and secretarial. Students are placed in these areas according to individual ability and any student in the school may take any business course which suits his needs. fri 51 ... For those students who wish to ac- quire knowledge ofthe make-up of for- eign languages, Burrell offers three courses: Spanish, French, and German. Spanish and French are taught up to the fourth year level, while German is offered up to the third level. ln addition to the text books, a modern language lab aids students in listening and speaking prac- tice. Many phases of culture such as cus- toms, songs, holidays, and geography are also taught in the language classes. Humamhes Expand Students Views ol' the World The Social Studies Department offers the student a wide choice of electives. Along with the required courses in World Cultures and American Cultures, P.O.D., Economics, International Relations, World Geography, Comparative Political 3YSt9mS, Sociology and Psychology are available as semester electives. '1 guy makes learning anatomy iust a little interesting. Flag football is one of the many outdoor games played in physical education class. Intramurals provide competition and enjoyment for enthusiastic students. Health classes are a part of every senior's curriculum at Burrell. Physical Education classes are held twice a week either in the pool or in the gymnasium. Students are able to develop coordination through gymnastic, athletic, and aquatic instruction. lntramural games in football, basketball and volleyball are also stressed along with the regular season sports. Health classes provide the student with a necessary knowledge ofthe care and development of the human body. Discus- sion on many of society's current health problems are also emphasized. Health is taken by all freshmen and seniors at Burrell. The courses offered, which include Mixed Choir, Girls' Chorus, Band, Harmo ny 84 Theory, and Music Appreciation, supply the basis for both individuality and group effort in making the calss en- joyable and beneficial to all involved. Mr. Skorija leads the choir at a school assembly. Directed by Mr. Lagoon, the marching band adds enthusiasm at BurreIl's football games. I s a student teacher. Burrell High School receives all of their student teachers from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. When college students in the School of Education reach their senior year, the entire area of con- centration consists of classroom observa' tion and, for a semester period, actual teaching in the classroom. The student teacher is required to study the teaching methods of several instructors, plan les- sons, and apply theory and creativity to their classroom vvork. The primary aim of this course is to guide students in becoming contributing members in society. Aside from on-the-job training, students take important academic sub- jects needed for a comfortable and satisfying future. Because most of the Occupational Education students plan to obtain jobs upon leaving school, the area of study is concentrated toward thi' goal rather than toward a college preparatory type of program. ,J nd lVlr. Home Economics and Industrial Arts Provide The Home Economics Department develops the basic skills needed for the proper care ofthe home. As in all the courses taught at Burrell, Home Economics students are given practical instruction and training for the future.
