D E D I C A T Map of Burr Oak Rural High School District I o N This Pow Wow is dedicated to Gale Tegley who has served as a school board member during the 22 years that the present district has been in ex- istence. This district. The Purr Oak Rural Dist- rict No.9, was voted in on May 19, 19U1 , by a vote of the community, 25U-199. At the June 23 election of board members, Mr. Tegley was elected treasurer of the newly formed district. He has served every year since. Now he will step down due to the formation of the new, Unified District No. 277. The school and community have appreci- ated his service to them. HIGH SCHOOL The Burr Oak High School building was completed in the summer of 1956. The building has nine classrooms, a library, an auditorium, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium. This year it was the halls of learning for 72 high school students and 53 Junior-high pupils. The 1966 Pow Wow is published by the Journal- ism Class of 5 irr Oak HiPh School, Burr Oak, Kansas. 2 GRADE SCHOOL The grade school was erected in 1899. It houses the first six grades with a total enrollment of 117. They toiled away with great efficiency for nine months at this enormous Job. The new teachers of the high school were: Robert Curtis, La Verne Wesley, and Jane Diehl. It is made up of a president elected ly the student body and representatives chosen by the separate classes. Their sponsor and advisor is Superintendent of Schools, Mr! Carl Stepp. The president this year was Dennis Garman. The deleeates elected by the classes were Seniors, Carla Garman, Dwayne Cockroft; Juniors, Rejeana Teigler, Ronald Smullins; Soph- omores, Glenna Boyles, Tom Tucker; Freshman, Cheryl Decker, Mike Benjamin. The council was very progressive and industrious this year. They sponsored the Home- coming float end ceremonies, dress-up days, assemblies, freshman initiation party, school carnival, and Christmas decorations. They purchased the coat racks and a scholarship plaque honoring the class with the highest per cent of its members on the honor roll. The Student Council is to be comended on the numerous projects and activities that they have participated in this year. It consisted of 17 girls and 13 boys who were dedicated to the task of re-echoing the sound of music. They presented a Christmas pro- gram. Glory to God, and participated in the Pike Trail League Choral Clinic held at Jamestown, November 9. The State Music Contest, April 23, at Selina was the high- light of the year as the Mixed Chorus, Boys Glee, and Girls Glee each sang two numbers. This formed the Nucleus of the irr Oak High School band that performed in par- ades, played during halftimes of athletic events, and played for the Homecoming and Sweetheart ceromonies. This year the band traveled to Red Cloud on September Li to march in the annual parade there and to Manhattan October 2 where they were one of 77 bands which partic- ipated in special halftime ceremonies at the Kansas State University football game. On March 8, the band played in the annual Pike Trail League Band Clinic held at Randall. The list of songs they played were: Sacred Suite, Carousel, Hyrmm of Freedom, Citadel, At the Fair, Two Gaelic Folk Songs, Sarabande, and Days of Glory. The B-Club is an organization formed by the athletes who have lettered in one of the sports of Burr Oak High School. They attended the K-State vs. Nebraska Dnlversity football game and the finals of the National J D C 0 tournament in Hutchinson. The annual Fathers Night was sponsored by the club again this year. Coffee and doughnuts were served to the fathers after the game. Basketball schedule pens were sold this year to help raise money for the club fund. They also sponsored a concession stand. There were 13 lettermen In football this year. New track pants and warm-ups were purchased to give the team a new look. It was borne out in a colorfully decorated float and traditional ceremony. The reigning royalty this year were Queen Carla Carman and King Dennis Garman. The Queen's Royal Court included first attendant Donna Seamans and second attendant R«gl Diehl. The King's attending royalty was Dwayne Cockroft, first attendant and Jim Harris, second attendant. The Oueen and members of her court were presented with bronze mum corsages. The royal car , an evening orchid colored, 1965 Chevrolet Impala owned by Bill and Doug May, was preceded onto the field by the marching band of BOHS. The ceremony and band routine then took place, after which the Oueen and her attendants were escorted the throne. The team brought hone several trophies to add to the trophy case. The Braves ended up with a season's record of 15-7. Burr Oak had a 5-2 league-game record result ing in a tie for second place. They also took second in the PTL tourney losing to Courtland in the championship play off game by one point. In post-season tournaments, the Braves fared very well. They took first place in the district by winning over Delphos by 20 points. Meeting some tough apposition in the reg- ional Burr Oak took third place, after defeating Long Island by 27 points. Her escort was Ronald Runyon. linoma Olena was first attendant and Beverly Jeffery was second attendant to the Sweetheart. Their escorts were Stanley Hesting and Ronald Smullins.
