THE BURTONIAN THE FARMER OF TODAY By Earle Hall 33 The farmer rs becomrng less and less an rmportant factor rn the lrfe of today He has no word rn anythrng Exen hrs word doesnt go as to how hrs crops should be grown The mam thrng rn farmrng especrally rn Vermont rs darryrnv That rs where the farmers trouble rs today Three years ago rnrlk sold for three dollars per hundred pounds At the present trme thrs same mrllc brrngs seventy five cents per hundred pounds Then the farmer lrwed lrke somebody and was somebody He could look everyone rn the face because hrs brlls were pard Or at least he could pay them anytrme Now rf rt wasnt for the farmer rarsrng a good share of hrs food h wouldnt even have enough nourrshment Not only that but the farmers are badly rn debt No farmer can pay hrs brlls at the present prrce of mrlk He has to mortgage hrs farm to pay brlls The mortgage rs foreclosed and the farmer rs out of a means of perhaps maltrng a bare lrvrng What can he do about rt7 Can the farmer say I want three dollars per hundred for my 1nrllt7 No he has to take Just what the company to whrch he shrps hrs mrlk pays hrm If he goes to town to buy grarn or food supplres can he say to the grarn dealer Ill pay ten dollars a ton for thrs gram? No he has to pay just what the gram dealer asks hrm Let us consrder grarn whrch rs necessary for the productron of mrlk as an example Gram used to sell for Gfty dollars a ton now rt sells for twenty Eve dollars a ton Here rs a drop of only fifty per cent whrle the prrce of mrlk has dropped seventy five to erghty per cent After payrng hrs gram brll for a month where rs he gorng to find money for hrs many other expendrtures7 He rsnt gorng to have any conse quently he wrll be so much rn debt after each month At the end of a year these debts wrll amount to a great deal of money When there rs yet no relref rn srght there doesnt seem to be any help for anyone Thrs rs the srtuatron at the present trme Strrkes have been called mrlk brlls have been passed yet the prrce to the farmer IS becomrng lower rnstead of hrgher every month The consumer pays from ten to Hfteen cents a quart for mrlk rn the crty The farmer gets a lrttle over a cent Where rs thrs money whrch averages from erght to thrrteen cents gorng to? The farmer doesnt get rt It goes rnto the hands of the mrddleman who rs growrng rrch at the farmers expense It doesnt bother hrm whether mrlk prices go up or down because rf rt goes down the farmer s prrce wrll be lowered agarn There are two hopes for the farmer If the rnrddleman would lower hrs rates rt would brrng a brgger prrce to the farmer or else the farmer wrll get a rarse that wrll come drrectly to hrm wrthout berng held by the mrddleman The drrect rarse has been promrsed by the New York market but rt seems rather slow rn comrng to the country THAT BRAT ' By Jeannette acques 36 One day our next door neighbor stuck her head rn the door and asked me rf I would mrnd takrng care of Roy her srx year old son I agreed to do so wrth a srnkrng of my heart When Roy appeared he proceeded to greet me by squrrtrng Water rn my face' As he turned to flee he stubbed hrs toe and ran head long rnto the brrd cage Seeds water and brrd feathers flew rn every drrectron - s x . . . 1 . , . x 1 .5- . . . , . , . . . . . . . , , B -r . . . , . Q A 1 THE BURTONIAN 31 SOCIAL EVENTS The social events of Burr and Burton this year were many and varied. The season opened with Mountain Day. Leaving the Seminary, in automobiles, at eightfforty-ive A. M., we started for Wyman's Cave, our destination. Riding as far as we could, then walking some distance, we arrived at the cave. With flashlights we found our way through a long narrow opening into the cave. After exploring it for some time, we came out-all glad to see the sun again. We ate our lunches in a large field just below the cave. Lunch over, we played baseball and other games until time for returning to our respective homes Thus ended a most pleasant day The first dance of the season was the Freshman Frolic given to the Freshmen by the Senior Class This was a most informal dance given for the sake of introducing the Freshmen to the gay times ahead of them at Burr and Burton The hall was simply decorated and light refreshments were served With the aid of a good orchestra and the co operation of the Seniors everyone enjoyed the evening The Masquerade Ball given by the junior Class was the social event next in line The hall was most attractively decorated with autumn leaves and with trimmings of orange and black The grand march came during intermission Prizes were awarded to those wearing the best costumes October refreshments of cider and doughnuts were served Very good music was supplied by an orchestra from a nearby town The party was a great success financially as well as socially The Basketball Banquet winding up a most successful season of that sport was held in the Community Club rooms About thirty six people gathered for a sumptuous feast and a gay time Qnone being disappointed, Much amusement and entertainment was afforded by Mr Robert the toastmaster A delightful turkey dinner followed by dancing was greatly enjoyed by everyone The Sophomore Hop given by the Sophomore Class was one of the more pleasing events of the school year Perhaps one of the most amusing features of the year was given at this time a baby parade which caused much hxlarity All sorts and descriptions of babies participated not to mention an Austin Light refreshments were served and the music was supplied by Hurleys Qrchestra On May 26 the unior Prom ushered in the formal events of the year It was well enjoyed and forecast the delightful evening of une 12 at which time the umors and Alumni presented the Senior Ball in honor of the graduating class During the year the usual contests in basketball baseball and tennis took place the Burr and Burton teams proving their worth in all of them During the winter a new plan of having short informal dances after the basketball games was inaugurated The dances were so well attended that they will undoubtedly be continued during the ensuing year The Senior Play 'The Admwable Crichton by Sir James Barrie directed by Miss Paradis was presented on May 17 Much credit is due to Miss Paradis and the cast for putting on such an excellent performance The cast was as follows Lord Brocklehurst Huntington Gilbert Hon Ernest Wooley Joseph Fowler Rev john Treherne Claude Campbell Mr Crichton Carlos Warner A Naval Ofhcer Blanchard Stone 4 1 D, ' , , - , .
