SPARTAN 84 A LOOK BACK... We cry as we think of our friendship. Now it exists as memories, happy and sad. Tears fill our eyes as thoughts invade our minds. Oh, how great the times we had. Bring us back, we plea inside. Yet we know we must go on to the future. We raise our glass and secretly we toast still another to the past. Twenty years from now we will gather once again, a room with a banner WELCOME BACK“ and the chatter You haven’t aged a bit“. As night falls the gathered ones shall become few, and then, just you and I, with the raise of the glass we will toast to our high school days. -Cathy Marks- Dedication Mr. Guilmette has been a devoted teacher and admimistrator at Burnt Hills for the past thirteen years. We seniors never got to know him as a teacher, but rather as an assistant principal. He has always been someone to go to when we needed help scheduling and putting on special activities, or just for a friendly ’’Good Morning from a man who took the time to know your name. His patience, caring, and contributions of time and effort over the years are very much appreciated. For all he has been and done for the students of Burnt Hills, and especially for our class, the ’’SPARTAN “84“ is dedicated to Mr. David A. Guilmette. b On the seventh of September All the doors were opened wide. To the new pear’s flood of sophomores. Where for three pears would abide. The next dap was official. And the seniors sauntered in. Followed closelp bp the juniors. All were eager to begin. First the students claimed their lockers Then friends gathered in the hall, When the buzzer rang for homeroom. So began another fall. ■Janice Page!- Top: Kerri Spring: Maria Morris: Sue Beeler: Center: Theresa Gallo and Ed Capovoni. Left: Mr. Koch. They load up several cars and head north for an overnignt trip to Skye Farm Lodge, near Warrensberg. Learning, planning, laughing, and sharing are all a part of Skye Farm, an annual workshop for student representatives and faculty advisors of the student government, the three classes, and the various clubs in our school. Participants learn leadership skills, brainstorm ideas for improvement of school activities, laugh through games of ’’Amoeba and ’’Invasion of the body snatchers , and spend a lot of time getting to know the people with whom they will be working. They return to Burnt Hills the next afternoon, a little sleepy perhaps, but full of new ideas in how to help make the coming year a great one for all of the students. 12 From top left, clockwise: Greg Constantino; Tom Petricca: Michelle Ginac: i.isa Supley and Shari Shimkus; Chris Kray and Eric Mosher. 13 HOMECOMING Under a full moon on a crisp Friday nignt, a large crowd huddled around the warmth of the annual bonfire. As the fun of Homecoming Weekend began. On Saturday afternoon, multitudes of fans competed for the best spaces on the bleachers as the Spartans battled the Saratoga Streaks on the football field. Adding to the spirit of the day was a colorful half-time parade, and the ever-popular Chicken Barbeque. The weekend was capped off by the Homecoming Dance. For three hours, a record crowd packed into the cafeteria and danced relentlessly. This tremendously successful and eventful weekend lived up to the popularity it has gained over the years. Halloween On the last day of October a few brave students, caught up in the spirit of Halloween, came to school disguised, costumed, masked, or cloaked. For one day out of the year they were able to act like complete lunatics, which is not at all uncommon, but for that one special Monday there was a legitimate reason for it. All they had to say was “I am just playing my character.” (It may have been the only time we were able to see their true natures.) Unfortunately there were fewer brave people this year than in recent years and they often found themselves the only one in the room dressed for Halloween. But those few carried the spirit and the craziness for the rest of the school. 30 From top right, clockwise: Holly Mackey; Mrs. Roberts; Tiffany Tonjes, Greg Rodriqrez and Mike LeFort; Scott Streifert and Joelle Viscusi; Stacey Smith and Candy Dopeke: Michelle Triassi. PASS The instrumental music program at Burnt Hills is very popular, and gives many talented students a variety of opportunities. The BH-BL band, an organization of sixty-two dedicated musicians directed by Mr. Brown, performs four concerts during the school year. During the fall, the band takes to the field in maroon and white to add spirit to varsity football games. Selected members of the band can get involved in other school music groups including Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Pep Band, and Spotlight Pit Band. The Jazz Ensemble is comprised of about twentyfive selected band members who rehearse twice weekly. They play a variety of music, from Count Basie to the latest pop charts. The group performs during the fall, spring, and ‘pops’ concerts, and they receive invitations to perform at conventions and banquets in the area. The Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Glen Soellner, has about fifteen string players, and additional wind and percussion players. They perform in three concerts, and accompany the annual spring musical and the graduation ceremony. All instrumentalists can audition for All-State, Area All-State, All-County, and Suburban Council Music Festivals.
