PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “Education has for its object the formation of character”—Herbert Spencer “Character is a by-product: it is produced in the great manufacture of daily duly —Woodrow Wilson All statements of the purpose of education include Spencer’s statement in some form, though rarely as the sole objective. If one agrees with Wilson, it is obvious that crash programs are not appropriate to the formation of traits which must evolve within an individual. We teach no courses in “Character Development”, hut all courses and all the activities of a school lead to this goal. By providing a program of sufficient diversity to offer a challenge to all and yet maintain an opportunity for success for all, a school sets the stage for self-knoUledge and self respect. By having an activity program which furnishes an opportunity to experience leadership, social participation, team co-operation, and acceptance of group and individual responsibility, that conduct is practiced which leads to character development. Of importance far greater than these is a teaching staff which establishes a school climate which provides a maximum of freedom within approved limits and which by precept and example develops a concept of morality and ethics in the student. In these respects you graduates of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School will find that you have been well served. n
