All men have one entrance EPIC 1965 Burnt Hills-B alls ton Lake High School Burnt Hills. New York FOREWORD Character fX|msM the trail. of a person or of ail in titiilion. In the 1965 EPIC we prc- t nt many :limp e of the character of If unit Hill a a school and as a way of life. We lielievo that tlw eliaraeter of Burnt Hill lias contributed to the development of the students who have entered it. We know that each student has left a part of himself here. This exchange i a spirit that the EPIC seeks to preserve for you. 4 5 6 DEDICA TION One of the ideals of education is the continued improvement‘of its methods and goals. Mr. Eugene Van Vranken has expressed this ideal in his tireless efforts to perfect the science curriculum. He has led in the development of the modern and interesting science courses that are taught here, courses whose prime emphasis is understanding. We appreciate not only Mr. Van’s work in course planning, hut also his intriguing method of presenting the normally uninteresting facts in the classroom. In gratitude for these services and also for his co-operation with sports and yearbook photography, we dedicate the 1965 EPIC to Mr. Van Vranken. 8 ADMINISTRATION School Board How 1: MISS KITH FINKLE, clerk, MR. BLACK. 10 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “Education has for its object the formation of character”—Herbert Spencer “Character is a by-product: it is produced in the great manufacture of daily duly —Woodrow Wilson All statements of the purpose of education include Spencer’s statement in some form, though rarely as the sole objective. If one agrees with Wilson, it is obvious that crash programs are not appropriate to the formation of traits which must evolve within an individual. We teach no courses in “Character Development”, hut all courses and all the activities of a school lead to this goal. By providing a program of sufficient diversity to offer a challenge to all and yet maintain an opportunity for success for all, a school sets the stage for self-knoUledge and self respect. By having an activity program which furnishes an opportunity to experience leadership, social participation, team co-operation, and acceptance of group and individual responsibility, that conduct is practiced which leads to character development. Of importance far greater than these is a teaching staff which establishes a school climate which provides a maximum of freedom within approved limits and which by precept and example develops a concept of morality and ethics in the student. In these respects you graduates of Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School will find that you have been well served. n Library Supervisor NIKS. EGAN Secretaries to the Administration Row 1: MRS. This would have been a good May 1. I have to go through College Boards six hours of them. I don’t even know whether it is worth going to college if college is as hard as these exams. I’m suffering from fatigue again. This time it is Brigadoon. Boy, this is quite a month! It's hard to believe the Prom is already over. All the weeks of anticipation were over in one night. Between baseball, tennis, etc., I’m fagged. June I. This is the month of all months. We have an hour-and-a-half Honors Day Assembly. Then a few days later we have a Sport Day Assembly of equal length. I know we all deserve all the awards we get after all these months of toil and sweat. Class Night is this week. I can’t believe that finals are already here. I don’t know how I am going to get through my history regents. Why worry, I’m graduating. But I am going to miss Burnt Hills. July 1. School is out. Summer is here. Now I can look over the year from a different perspective—the end instead of the beginning. In September I had such great plans. When commencement is over, where do you go from there? Not too many years ago, a high school education was sufficient for most jobs; college was almost a luxury except for those who planned careers in such fields as medicine and law. Today, the pattern is entirely different. Advances in technology affect everyone in every business . . . and, frankly, a high school education is seldom enough to equip you to meet the challenge of the present ... to help you get a job with a future. What’s the answer? More education . . . four-year colleges, junior colleges, community colleges, technical schools, extension courses, anything at all which will increase your knowledge, develop your personal skills. There are jobs waiting . .. but these jobs call for knowledge and skill. Gen- eral Electric is just one of the many companies which will have job openings in the years to come for those who can meet job requirements. There are new products, new technologies on today’s drawing boards . . . with still others yet to be thought of . . . which will call for people with education, training and ability. The future needs not only men and women to come up with ideas, but also people to put those ideas into practice . . . designers and developers, scientists and salesmen, technicians and teachers . . . people with sufficient education to fill jobs. Now it’s up to you. You may choose the broad highway open to you through more education ... or wander down the dead end street of lost opportunities. If you keep learning, you’ll keep growing . . . growing with our nation in the age of space.
