IN APPRECIATION As the class of ’64 approaches graduation, we think of these past three years and the guidance you have given us as class advisers. We are aware of the many hours you have pondered over our seeming major catastrophes, only to show us the easiest solution. MR. ENZIEN MRS. FRAGALE We know we were the source of much concern and we hope your efforts were not fruitless. Thank you, Mrs. Fragale and Mr. Enzien, and best of wishes for the future.

DEDICATION Once in our lifetime we meet an individual whose personable and helpful attitude influences us all; such a person is Mrs. Margaret Coffin. We have all seen the products of Mrs. Coffin’s labors: the EPIC and HILLTOP, several Le FONTS, and innumerable ARROWHEADS. The hub of the publications’ wheel, the publications’ room, is a result of Mrs. Coffin’s incessant urgings for adequate facilities for the yearl ook, the newspaper, and the literary magazine. Without her capable assistance our productions would have lacked required finesse and organization. We will always remember Mrs. Coffin and her amiable smile which brightened many dim days. Her influence may well be seen in this yearbook, and in appreciation of many days and nights of labor and worry we dedicate the ’64 EPIC to, Mrs. Margaret Coffin.

PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE As I write this in September, 1963, the newspapers and the airways are full of news which affects all who are concerned with the affairs of men. A governor is closing the schools of his state in a frantic, and hopefully futile, effort to prevent Americans of different color from pursuing their education in the same classrooms. Congress is debating the atomic test ban treaty, and various persons are warning of impending disaster to our civilization as a result of the poisoning of our air, soil, and water by industrial waste and the indiscriminate use of chemicals intended for a specific beneficial purpose. Automation threatens the jobs of thousands of skilled and semi-skilled workers. It has been said that a highbrow is “a man educated beyond his intelligence.” One wonders if our civilization is not rapidly approaching that condition. Each generation faces its own challenges. Those facing yours are tremendous indeed. But if the future seems threatening, it also holds great promise, for never did the victory over poverty, disease, ignorance, prejudice, and war seem so possible. The mechanics now exist if man is wise enough to use them. Your high school years have not equipped you to reform the world, but we hope that they have been more than an extended cramming of information. If we have developed in you an awareness of the responsibility of the individual, and an appreciation of your own ignorance in proportion to the sum of mankind's knowledge, we have at least started you on the road to true education. Follow it as far as you can. The world needs you. 6
