EPIC Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School Burnt Hills, New York 1964 IN MEMORIAM Burnt Hills remembers Mike Meals in many ways: frantically trying to organize unruly groups of students for club pictures in the 1963 Epic, pointing out a succession of Civil War battles with’an eagerness matched only by a spellbound American History class, attacking a debate with the devoted determination that qualified him as a member of the National Forensic League, or intently explaining a prize-winning science fair exhibit. Yet, he was more to each of us than could ever be sufficiently expressed in words or memories. Mike’s death was a severe loss, not only to those who knew him best, but also to the school and community that he served with an unfailing sense of selflessness. He was a true Spartan in ways many of us will never achieve or know. FOREWORD Education is a process which is continually altered by progress. Its theme is antique, but not obsolete. The educational maps suffer from the yearly, monthly, and even daily passing of time. Within its limits education is an epic that will live through the years. This epic is modernized by the knowledge-seeking demands of the young. The class of 1964 wishes to present this yearbook, the second Epic, as representing the realization of the goals of education for us. As we reflect upon these last twelve years, we remember many tear-stained moments, both sad and happy. Perhaps we do not always remember what we have learned, but we still remember learning it. Most of our experiences at Burnt Hills will be forever engraved in our memories as integral segments of our educational epic. DEDICATION Once in our lifetime we meet an individual whose personable and helpful attitude influences us all; such a person is Mrs. Margaret Coffin. We have all seen the products of Mrs. Coffin’s labors: the EPIC and HILLTOP, several Le FONTS, and innumerable ARROWHEADS. The hub of the publications’ wheel, the publications’ room, is a result of Mrs. Coffin’s incessant urgings for adequate facilities for the yearl ook, the newspaper, and the literary magazine. Without her capable assistance our productions would have lacked required finesse and organization. We will always remember Mrs. Coffin and her amiable smile which brightened many dim days. Her influence may well be seen in this yearbook, and in appreciation of many days and nights of labor and worry we dedicate the ’64 EPIC to, Mrs. Margaret Coffin. IN APPRECIATION As the class of ’64 approaches graduation, we think of these past three years and the guidance you have given us as class advisers. We are aware of the many hours you have pondered over our seeming major catastrophes, only to show us the easiest solution. MR. ENZIEN MRS. FRAGALE We know we were the source of much concern and we hope your efforts were not fruitless. Thank you, Mrs. Fragale and Mr. Enzien, and best of wishes for the future. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE As I write this in September, 1963, the newspapers and the airways are full of news which affects all who are concerned with the affairs of men. A governor is closing the schools of his state in a frantic, and hopefully futile, effort to prevent Americans of different color from pursuing their education in the same classrooms. Congress is debating the atomic test ban treaty, and various persons are warning of impending disaster to our civilization as a result of the poisoning of our air, soil, and water by industrial waste and the indiscriminate use of chemicals intended for a specific beneficial purpose. Automation threatens the jobs of thousands of skilled and semi-skilled workers. It has been said that a highbrow is “a man educated beyond his intelligence.” One wonders if our civilization is not rapidly approaching that condition. Each generation faces its own challenges. Those facing yours are tremendous indeed. But if the future seems threatening, it also holds great promise, for never did the victory over poverty, disease, ignorance, prejudice, and war seem so possible. The mechanics now exist if man is wise enough to use them. Your high school years have not equipped you to reform the world, but we hope that they have been more than an extended cramming of information. If we have developed in you an awareness of the responsibility of the individual, and an appreciation of your own ignorance in proportion to the sum of mankind's knowledge, we have at least started you on the road to true education. Follow it as far as you can. The world needs you. 6 7 A school is a merger of color, enlightenment, and entertainment. We as members of the class of 1964, shall ahvays remember Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake as such an institution. We hope that our years in senior high have reflected our pride in the school as a symbol of singular accomplishment by all. Administration is the coordinator of the functionings of the entire school. As the organizational director of school life, administration seeks to fulfill the goals of education in a world of chaos and constant turmoil. A good teacher is characterized by continuity of thoughts and actions. To probe further, one might inquire, what constitutes a good faculty? Indeed the above factors must be included, hut a faculty is more. A faculty is a group of educators handed together to promote and further the formation of character through education. As seniors we set the pace for the rest of the school by leading and organizing extracurricular activities. We attempt to further education by goading the underclassmen to bigger and better goals. When commencement is over, where do you go from there? Not too many years ago, a high school education was sufficient for most jobs; college was almost a luxury except for those who planned careers in such fields as medicine and law. Today, the pattern is entirely different. Advances in technology affect everyone in every business . . . and, frankly, a high school education is seldom enough to equip you to meet the challenge of the present ... to help you get a job with a future. What’s the answer? More education . . . four-year colleges, junior colleges, community colleges, technical schools, extension courses, anything at all which will increase your knowledge. develop your personal skills. There are jobs waiting . .. but these jobs call for knowledge and skill. Gen- eral Electric is just one of the many companies which will have job openings in the years to come for those who can meet job requirements. There are new products, new technologies on today’s drawing boards . . . with still others yet to be thought of . . . which will call for people with education, training and ability. The future needs not only men and women to come up with ideas, but also people to put those ideas into practice . . . designers and developers, scientists and salesmen. technicians and teachers . . . people with sufficient education to fill jobs. Now it’s up to you. You may choose the broad highway open to you through more education ... or wander down the dead end street of lost opportunities. If you keep learning, you’ll keep growing . . . growing with our nation in the age of space. T-BIRD BEAUTY BOWER RED DOOR ANTIQUES 184 Kingsley Road Burnt Hills The production of this yearbook has truly been a learning experience, both for myself and all other members of the Epic Staff. It has involved a great deal of time and effort on the part of many people and 1 should like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them. 1 would like to express my thanks to both Miss Beyer and Mr. Mazzerella for the hours which they spent, proofreading, chauffeuring members of the advertising staff, listening to new ideas and assessing their value, and overseeing this production in general. 1 am very grateful to both Mr. Gray, our Taylor Representative, and Mr. Epner, our photographer, for the service and guidance they have contributed to this book. The varied aspects of this book have involved many members of the student body to all of whom 1 extend my thanks, but 1 feel that a special thank-you is warranted for each of my editors; Advertising—Elaine Waldron Layout—Paula Johrde Subscription—Buddy Colden Sports—Peter Blood Photographer—Peggy Glen Literary—Sue Welch This note of thanks would not be complete without mention of Bill Witbeck and Barb Ingraham both of whom gave up many hours of their time to the 1964 Epic. Bill as photographer and Barb as artist. In thanking persons who have contributed to this book 1 cannot overlook my parents who made many hurried trips to the post office as deadlines neared and who were wonderfully cooperative about this endeavor. 1 sincerely thank all of those who helped to make the 1964 Epic a reality, and hope that you have found your time well spent.
