As we have grown into young adults, we realize what the theater really means. We have learned that there is much more to the job than the final production. The people of the theater, as we do, strive to attain a specific goal. This final end in the theater is a successful opening night. In our lives, it is the completion of this project, our yearbook. To phrase this in the language of Shakespeare, All the world's a stage and all the men and women merely players. Plays of quality live forever. We sincerely hope that our year- book may join these ranks. May this accomplishment be a memory we can treasure throughout our lives. :lNfQ f We of The class of I955 dedicafe fhis page memory of Mr. Arihur Mengel, who for many was a member of ihe Board of Educalion. His +he guiding hand +ha+ sfeered our school for many years 'lhrough sfrife and foil. ' We, the class of 1955, proudly dedicate this edition of the Hilltop to Mr. Walter R. Reid. We do this in appreciation of his twenty years of service to our school as guidance director and coach. We shall always remember the many ways lVlr. Reid has helped us in forming a strong foundation, upon which to build our lives. In the future his tireless efforts will continue to play an important role in our lives. Our gratefulness to you, Mr. Reid, is far too great for words. TRIBUTES We would like to pay tribute to our ad- visors, Miss Warren, Mr. Marshall, and Mrs. Conroy for their insight and judge- ment throughout our four years in high school. Although Mrs. Conroy was un- able to remain with us through the four years, we are grateful for her help and advice. We offer our deepest appreciation to Miss Ashworth for her guidance and direction in the homeroom. Our thanks to Miss Goodwin for her able assistance with the advertising sec- tion of this edition of the Hilltop. We shall always remember with gratitude the advice and understanding of our friends, the teachers and advisors. 9 fel H .N -vena-Q..--r.nuv1:,umr,.., .,..-M-.--f,.,,--- Y Aix Q i-.AM Y N .I . - Wi sf 'wi 7 'lf I I 3: ,r M ' ' V 1 . . Add a few pinches of study, taking care not to put too much as this ingredient is very expensive and hard to obtain. Gradually stir in one-half pound dignity. When the mixture begins to swell, remove from the fire and whip, flavoring with banana oilv to suit the individual taste. Sweeten with the sugar of self-assurance, and, when cool, can and seal it. Put it away for four years for longer as may be requiredj in a cool place to keep it from spoiling. When ready serve it with excuses. The iniredients are bought at the apothecary's at the house of knowledge on the road to graduation. fNote: All measurements are level. We shall look back on these years with some fond, some sad, and some happy memories. Although we can't possibly record all of these memories. we shall try to review most of them. We entered our Freshman year very young and fresh! We soon became accustomed to the fact that there were other people in the world. There were Sophomores, Juniors and- Seniors! We thought it would take us forever to reach their height. We soon came down to earth and elected our class officers. They were. ,lim Kehrer, Presidentg Gail Olin, Vice President, Ann Boice, Secretaryg and Alice Linville, Treasurer. Jim Kehrer and Ann Rychcik represented us in the Student Council. We sold seeds and magazines to raise money to pay our way in the world. With our newly-found wealth as capital,.we presented our first evening dance. At the dance. thanks to Miss Doyle and CPC's, we were able to put our rusty manners to use. Time waits for no one, you know. Basketball started. When we saw our boys on the floor, we all yelled a little louder and stronger. The cheerleaders helped us on this score. We were proud of them, too. We ended this full year with No Regents, and a picnic at White's Beach. We had gotten our feet wet and were raring to get even wetter in the next school year. Upon entering our Sophomore year, we had gained some confidence and lost some innocence. Now we were full fledged high school students! This year there was a new face among us. She was our blood sister from Finland, Terttu Kivimaki. She was here, sponsored by the American Field Service. We hope she liked us as much as we liked her. Our class officers this year were, Jim Kehrer for President, Lewis Carpenter for Veep, and Alice and Ann held their posts. To the Student Council, we sent Bob Gregoire. The second, and probably the most exciting thing we did was to order our class rings. '6Oh dear, what color stone, what style should l get? These were some of the questions that were heard. The people on our ring committee were Ann Boice, Bill Boice, ,lim Mullen, Jim Kehrer, Lewis Carpenter, Phyllis Stevens, Shirley Merchant, Alice Linville, Bill Cruick- shank, Nancy Curtis, Barbara Biggerstaff, Jim Wheeler. This year we were minus two familiar faces among the faculty. They were Mr. Wilbur and Mr. Amyot. October came and all we could see in the halls were elephants, no not the pink kind, and donkeys. Soon the cries of I like lke won out over the clamor of the rival camp . . . Ike became our President! This was our year in sports. Our boys won the ,l.V. trophy. We tied up the cheerleading squad with Sophomores, too. Parties! Parties! and more parties livened our evenings. What fun we did have! Some of us were lucky enough to be asked to go to the Junior Prom. lt was the first formal dance for most of us. Boy, did we feel grown up! Regents popped up again this year. After struggling through them, we were happy to discover we had passed. Now we could look forward to our ,lunior year. The top of the hierarchical ladder was in sight! Glory! Glory! Our rings arrived. For a week we went around with our hands extended, making sure everyone noticed them. Along in November we put on our first three-act play. Mrs. Tilton was at the helm. After weeks of work, hard work, the exciting opening night arrived. Curtain Going Up!! Places everybody! Quiet backstage! Our hearts sang to the music of the applause of the audience. It was a success! Our Dramatics club then produced more detailed assembly programs. This time our boys were on the Varsity. Of course, our girls were right in there helping to win the game, with lung power. 6 , or 2. aw li Z 1 Sheff l,,1x.Ul'A-li X , ,pn gn f :MQ K 402 F Lew Carpenter was our President, Bob Gregoire was Veep, Ann was secretary, and Judy VanHuesen was treasurer. We elected Pat Sheehan to the Student Council. Hey Walk! or No skipping stairs, became regular words in our vocabulary. We were fa o A ! il .. 4 , HISTGRY ' 7 ff on the Junior Traffic Squad. There were other clubs to take up our time, such as girls' and boys' leader club, Debating club, and of course intramurals. Many social events perked up our nights. Among them, were the Senior Ball, Dances, and Jackie's pajama party. That was a night that very few girls got any sleep. We were blessed with a wonderful boy from Norway this year. Berent'Shjetne was his name. He was a wonderful ambassador. Three of our best represented us in Europe that summer. Phyllis Stevens and Merl Galusha went to Germany and Bob Fiske went to the Netherlands. With spring came our own Junior Prom. After many suggestions and much debate, we decided on Blue Hawaii as our theme. Nancy Curtis and Phyllis Stevens were our chairmen. For weeks, orchids were our existence. The call for scotch tape and scissors was the cry heard on the Friday of the Prom. With the able assistance of Miss Warren and Mr. Marshall, we left Friday thinking that ours was the most beautiful prom ever. We scurried home to prepare ourselves for those few minutes of a lifetime. Babs Ridley was our queen for this enchanted evening. The end of the year was near. We were caught up in the whirl of Regents and the Commencement of our friends. The Seniors then chose Shirley, Nancy Curtis, Bob Gregoire. Don Mitchell and Bill Boice as the ushers at Class day. Lew led the procession as Grand Marshal. With the whirl of the Seniors' graduation our Junior year came to a close. To top it off, our class had a picnic at Shirley's camp. September whirled around faster than most of us expected. We were, at last, the top men on the totem pole. After the shock of it had worn off, some settled down to work and others still played. Our three ambassadors were back home with many pictures and stories to tell. lt was our turn to have a student with us. It was our luck to have Gisela Barth .from Germany to share our last year. To see us through our final year we elected Lew as President, Bob Fiske for Vice President, Nancy Morcombe as Secretary, and Judy as Treasurer. For our last elected member to the Student Council, we chose Bob Fiske. In October we gave our last formal dance, our Senior Ball. The theme was Isle of Starlight. Pat Sheehan and Nancy Curtis were chairmen. When we first began to decorate we wondered if it would ever resemble what we wanted it to look like. This time the demands were for stars, scotch tape, and scissors. Pat Grundhoeffer wore the crown this night. We all enjoyed this last formal of our own to the hilt. The biggest thing of the year was the Hilltop. Dick DeWeese was our most able editor. Many times one saw him ready to pull out his hair to meet a deadline. Well, we finally met our last deadline, thanks to the hard work of many people. Our dramatics production were The Other Wise Man, produced for Christmas and The Little Dog Laughed for our spring production. We have not been able to record all of the things that have happened. We hope that we have been able to put in the most important ones. We are looking forward to graduation and class day. This will be the final act. It will be the climax of our whole school career. In later life, as we look back in the yearbook and this history, many friendships will last a lifetime. Some of these friendships will be strong and lasting, others will not. We hope that this history will forever give pleasant memories. v iii ' 33 Q , xgga xxx? A 1 at HI. mwainij Shadow v ,X X If l, 'Rx N1 ig . ' ...f 'tt 47 l We didmf always agree! l Orchids! Orchids! We welcomed Gisela, our foreign ex- change student, to our Hallowed Halls. We received our first ovation as seniors when we first paraded into assembly. OCTOBER We had our first taste of devilment when we crashed the junior dance. Our soccer team made an exceptional showing by handing Watervliet its first league loss in 50 games. We finished a strong second but were unable to enter the sectionals. The girls had a field hockey outing at Ballston but were rained out. Pat Grundhoeffer was Queen of our Senior Ball, the top social night of the fall YEAR SCHSOII. 1 Pizza loving farmers NOVEMBER Basketball season came into full swing with a win over Shenendahowa. We were fortunate in getting 7 seniors on the squad. There were several activity period dances including the Leaders, Club dance. Christmas Party 5., M,qf.'s i N J ' W Repeat- Performers f-yy ..,., Our first deadline was due this month, on the 15th. So we burned a little midnight oil. The Dramatics Club put on a production of The Other Wise Man. It was a success despite the lack of space and properties. We are hoping to do the spring produc- tion in our spacious new theater. Christmas Vaca- tion came upon us and before we knew it a new year had rolled around. The Other Wise- Man AT FEBRUARY This was the month which was to make or break our basketball team. We went right down to the wire but were defeated in a thriller at Corinth. We ended our season tied for third place. Our activity program included a Student Council Dance, a talent show, and National Honor Society Inductions. Soccer Team JANUARY January came upon us in all her lVlidyear's Glory. The average gain in regent's retake was -5. We are sure we gained from the experience anyway. To arouse some interest the senior girls wore pajama tops one day. The basketball team had a stroke of bad luck when Jim Kehrer injured his knee, and the team began to lose some of its games. Cisela was honored at a surprise party planned by the National Honor Society and Student Council. This event, we hope, made up for her broken wrist and lost appendix. Deadline , ls. 1 'fx a B.H.-B.L MARCH Bill and Bill Yearbook preparations were in their last stages as it was due for the publishers on the 11th. A mad scramble between the band concert and our deadline caused some sleepless nights. College ap- plications have paid off for some of us as we have some acceptances.
