FOREWORD As light piercing darkness, the arrow sped, unerring, to its mark. The hand flew from quiver to bow — another arrow followed home. With words it is not so easy. When one reaches for a shaft one may find that one's quiver is empty. How then, are we to tell you? Let us begin . . . Once, the land upon which the school stands today, was Indian territory, wild, uncut, untamed. To provide grazing land for the deer and better hunting grounds, the Indians burned some hills to the west and southwest of our location. These became known as the burnt-over hills and later as Burnt Hills. Thus, we owe the first half of the name of our school to the Indian. For the second half we are indebted to the Rev. Eliphalet Ball, an early settler. Burnt Hills -Ballston Lake . . . How different it sounds when you know the history behind it! Two Indian trails once crossed where our school now stands. How many of us know this? How many of us, if we do, ever think about it? Truly the Indian is the Forgotten American. That the Indain might not be forgotten — that we might keep in mind the originator of some of our most interesting traditions, and know more of him — for these reasons and many others the Indian, with his varied traditions and legends, his colorful history, was chosen as the symbol of something very dear to us, our yearbook.
