1953 Presented by the SENIOR CLASS OF Burnt Hills - Ballston Lake School TABLE OF CONTENTS B.H - B.L. CHIEFS 5 SENIOR BRAVES and SQUAWS 15 JUNIOR BRAVES and SQUAWS 49 WARRIORS 63 INJUN-UITIES 77 PAPOOSES 103 SMOKE SIGNALS 130 A FOREWORD As light piercing darkness, the arrow sped, unerring, to its mark. The hand flew from quiver to bow — another arrow followed home. With words it is not so easy. When one reaches for a shaft one may find that one's quiver is empty. How then, are we to tell you? Let us begin . . . Once, the land upon which the school stands today, was Indian territory, wild, uncut, untamed. To provide grazing land for the deer and better hunting grounds, the Indians burned some hills to the west and southwest of our location. These became known as the burnt-over hills and later as Burnt Hills. Thus, we owe the first half of the name of our school to the Indian. For the second half we are indebted to the Rev. Eliphalet Ball, an early settler. Burnt Hills -Ballston Lake . . . How different it sounds when you know the history behind it! Two Indian trails once crossed where our school now stands. How many of us know this? How many of us, if we do, ever think about it? Truly the Indian is the Forgotten American. That the Indain might not be forgotten — that we might keep in mind the originator of some of our most interesting traditions, and know more of him — for these reasons and many others the Indian, with his varied traditions and legends, his colorful history, was chosen as the symbol of something very dear to us, our yearbook. The class of 1953 would like to dedicate this book to Mr. Stevens in appreciation for the last twenty-five years which he has spent blazing a trail through the wilderness of education for the students of B.H. - B.L. His fine sense of values has made clear to us our goals in life both large and small, and his friendly guidance and fond interest in all our problems have given us a more pleasant view of our schoolwork. Mr. Stevens originally came to B.H. - B.L. as a teacher in 1928. Until 1938 he taught mathematics and science and coached our budding athletic teams. Both as teacher and principal he has done his best for our school, and we are indebted to him. To show our gratitude and esteem for him we would like to, in our humble way, add ourselves to those who find their obligation to him great, their love for him strong, and their admiration for him deep, sincere, and undying. 6 TRIBUTES We would like also to express our appreciation of the untiring efforts given toward guiding our class by our advisers, Mr. Trombly, Mrs. Bourossa, Miss Doyle and Mr. Hagan. They have all done their utmost to help us carry out our various projects and have given us the constant support which was essential to make this book and our entire high school career successful and unforgettable. 7 BIG CHIEFS First row: Mr. F. Stevens, Mr. E. D. McArthur, Mr. R. Wyman, District Superintendent of Schools. Second row: Mr. R. Cunningham, Mr. A. Frieberg, Miss R. Finkle, Mr. E. Smith, Mr. A. Mengel. They were then blood brothers, closer than actual brothers or friends could ever be. Our foreign student, Terttu Kivimaki, is a modern day brother ; instead of exchanging blood with the students of B.H.- B.L., however, she is trading ideas, knowledge of the life and peoples of a different part of the globe. Terttu immigrated from Finland just before school opened in September. Her year's stay here has been made possible through the support of the American Field Service, the National Honor Society and Student Council, the Rowledge family, and the people of this community. Terttu, or Trudy as she is often called, attends regular high school sessions; her mastery of the English tongue allows her to participate actively in class discussions and club meetings alike. Terttu, dignified and friendly, truly typifies the proud nation she represents. She is our symbol of the understanding that should exist between nations, the realization that, after all, all men are brothers. 37 'WE like Ike. Kathy's Party At Secor's GOP vs. Democrats! Our Chinese Fantasy became a frantic nightmare i’or some; talk of lotu« buds, pagodas, fans, lanterns, and GOLD PAINT filled the Junior homerooms. The night preceding the Prom was one of the most hectic of our lives. Few of us will forget crawling on dusty rafters, trying to find staples, scotch tape, scissors, etc., etc., making orange and lemon punch in the cafeteria—AND regarding the chandelier in the center of the gym and the appearance of the stage when we camfe in the next morning. But when everything was ready, we hurried home to primp for th big night, assured that ours was to be the best Junior Prom the school ever had. Now we are Seniors, and the end of our stay at B.H.-B.L. is drawing near. The thoughts of graduation are constantly in our minds: Will June ever come? for some; Oh, Ma, what will I do? for others. But however we view the approaching cessation of our school life, we have all plunged into the whirl of our final year. We are occupied with the 1953 Hilltop, the Senior Blue Heaven Ball, the candy counter (adding to the class coffers again), soccer and basketball games, class meetings ( President Secor, I nominate that the meeting be adjourned ), and Solid Geometry and Business Law. One of our most pleasant evenings was spent at the party held at Kathy Grandy's house in honor of our exchange student from Finland, Terttu Kivimaki. In charge of our class government are Doris Secor, President; Charles Nessle, Vice President; Pauline Charbonneau, Secretary; and Edward Svet-lik. Treasurer. When we look back at the days spent at B.H.-B.L., the memories of our competent Advisors, Mr. Trombly, Mrs. Bourossa, Miss Doyle, and Mr. Hagan, will be foremost in our minds; the time of graduation will gain true proportion; our high school life will grow in significance and enjoyment. Our history comes to an end, and the keepers of this log close their records and affix their seal. 45 46 47 O ®r , CLASS P The class 53 , it is one of the besn In all the wide county when put to As test. The squad consists of six girls and two substitutes from the 11th and 12th grades. The main purpose of the Cheerleaders is to lead the audience through the cheers. They help keep the fellows' spirit up and give them reassurance while playing a game. Their song: We Will Cheer for the Team is a good example of the sportsmanship supplied 70 First row: J Wheeler, B. Boice, J. Mullen, J. Kehrer B. Martin. Second row: Coach Wei , B. Davi , W. They have gone to many playdays and, although they didn't win any games, a lot of fun was had by all. The fall program began with hockey and soccer. The teams were chosen and games were played during activity periods. From these teams Mrs. Nisco picked the honor teams. The girls on the honor teams received a felt badge and a certain amount of points. Winter activities consisted of basketball and volleyball. Besides our regular intramural activities we have had many other inside sports during the winter months, such as: bowling, table tennis, tumbling, fencing, etc. In the spring a program of baseball, archery, golf and tennis was played and more playdays were held. The members of the Leaders' Club helped make these playdays successful. The Leaders' Club is an organization of girls who have an average in physical education of 90 per cent or over. They help in the refereeing and scoring in intramural games and they also help Mrs. Nisco teach the younger girls. 74 L. Williams, B. Maichele, D. Secor, A. Schilling, J. Stewart, C. Melber, K. OUR THANKS At this time the Yearbook Staff of the 1953 Hilltop would like to thank all those who co-operated to make this book a success. The faculty for calmly enduring constant disruptions of their classes and the many impositions made upon them. The student body for their unlimited support and encouragement. The publisher and photographers for tolerating our numerous idiosyncrasies in silent patience. The patrons and patronesses for giving their precious time to aid us in our various projects. The advertisers and businessmen for their sustaining financial support. To all these we wish to extend our loyal friendship in sincere appreciation for the wonderful assistance they have given us. 130 YOUR RING COMMITTEE We are very proud to have been selected as the official jeweler for your Class Ring.
