' X H f S TORJ N...f - lf' 'X In the September of 1936 a small group of children gathered together at the Burns Grade School, determined to form a winnlng team They found themselves on their own ten yard line Their start1ng line up cons1sted f Mary Lou Oakley, Wendell Edwards, Edith Langenegger, Wanda Rae Riggs Norma Lee Riggs, Max Riggs, Betty Notz, Mar1lyn B1nford, Florence Larsen, Harold Thompson, Bill Lassley, Ted hilbanks, Don M1lhe1ser, Vernon hehry John Guiney, Darwin McIntosh, Clarence Martinez, and Arch1e dart They were ably coached by Miss Eleanor Hall and by the end of the school year they found that after lots of hard work and co operation they had made a flrst down win Ammeter Joined the team, and Ted Wilbanks, Don Milhelser, Arch1e Hart and Mary Lou Oakley were lost to other teams Although it was tougher gc ing the team galned 7 yards after lots of scrlmmage During the1r third year the squad participated in a Symphonette and a Harmon1ca Band under the dlrectlon of Mr Hotton Their team was st1ll strong, being coached by Miss Helen Hutsell, although Bill Lassley was substltuted and h1s place was taken by Arlene Harms and Roberta Sm1th After a year of hard wo V they had gained 10 more yards The team made another down at the end ol heir fourth year, agaln being coached by Miss Hutsell Some changes were made 1n the l1ne up, Betty Lou Blevins, Curtis Jantzen, and Melvin Jantzen, were sent in For Harold Thompson, A change of rooms and coach d1d not alter the team's success dur ing the1r fifth year Only one substitution was made Johnny Stucky tod the place of Roberta Smith Under the strong coachlng of Miss Jenny Averr the team again pushed through the enemy defense to ga1n ll yards During the sixth year the squad took on a few extra activitles the side lines Some of the team, belng mus1cally 1nc1ined, Joined the band. The squad also took part mn an operetta 'The Toys That Had To Wa1t ' Still they d1dn't forget thelr ma1n object1ve, and aga1n under the coaching of M1ss Avery, they gained 12 yards, using several fake passes and w1th the following substltutlons Elg1n Hiebert, Donald Dody, Norma Koehn, and Garth Morgan for Betty Lou Blevins Then came the seventh year, w1th the goal line drawlng closer and closer A change in buildlngs was made and the squad enjoyed a chlle supper Although new methods of coachlng were introduced by M138 Oma Colllns, the team, w1th many fake passes and kicks, managed to push through the l1ne of scrim age to ga1n 8 yards Substitut1ons were Audrey Harr1s for Donald Dody, Clarence Martinez, Darwln Mclntosh, Neva June McIntosh, Garth Morgan and Wanda Rae Riggs Then came the great climax their eighth year with 22 yards to go. Along w1th other activities the class decided to choose class 0ff1C6FB to aid them in the1r struggle for victory They elected Sherwun Ammeter as presldent, Marilyn Binford as vice president, and Arlene Harms as sec retary and treasurer Under the able coachlng of M1ss Lois Betts, and although two squad members, Norma Koehn and Max Riggs, were lost, the team finally came to the day when they hovered on the one yard line examination day! After a pep talk by the coach they went in determined to come out the victors. With a mlghty push they were over, a touchdown! Thelr first one! After su1table ceremonies they received the1r dlplomas. They decided that it was so much fun making a touchdown that they would go on to make a few more. n:. Sher- . . . , ' on So it was not surprising when most of the squad members turned up as freshman 1n Burns High School 1n the fall of '43, determ1ned to gain their extra point and to make another touchdown in four years Although John Gulney, Curtls Jantzen, and U61V1D Jantzen falled to arrive, the team was made much stronger by the addltion of Charles Bayes, Lee Roy Church, Aaron Claassen, Bobby Clark, Richard Gfeller, W11lard Larsen, Darw1n Mclntosh Cl1fford Roberts, Duane Sherldan, Edwln Spangler, John Wyse, Joanna Craw ford, Wanda Edmonds, LaVonne Gillet, Ruby Mae Lee, Bonnie Rowe, Dorothy Hade, Delores Wilson, and Patricia Wyss After the team had successfully carried the ball across the goal line to gain the extra point, they were agaln placed on the1r own ten yard line and told that their ObJ8Ct1V6 was to reach the goal line w1th1n the next four years Due to the fact that Arlene Harms and Lee Roy Church had been outstandlng 1D helplng to make the extra point, they were rewarded with the Freshman Scholarship Award at the end of the1r freshman year The squad took on many extra act1vi ties during the1r first year of high school. After a few minutes of rest and the ooaoh s pep talk the boys returned to the f1eld w1th the determination to lick the Bull dogs Due to some bad centering and passing on the part of the Hornets the opponents finished the game with 39 points to the Hornets 12 Although the boys were beaten their spirits were high and they were eager to tangle with the next team on the schedule. The Leon Lions came to exterminate the Hornets in the1r own nest on September 26 Although the Hornets' first downs outnumbered the Lions' and their passes were superior, the Lions scored a second touchdown on a long end run defeating the Hornets 15 to 6 The briskness of the even1ng, the host of grldircn fans, and the Hornet Band added much to the oolor of the evening October 3, that was the date on which the Hornets traveled to Sedg w1ck through a hail storm to play the third game of the season. The air was refreshing, the summer drouth broken, the dust settled, and the Hor nets were eager to play The half ended 20 0 in Sedgwick's favor R member those defective gridiron lights? The last home game the Hamilton eleven, a favorite team of the cattle country came to test the Hornets on Halloween eve. Richard Gfeller uncorked a 35 yard pass to Ken Phillips which resulted in a Hornet victory 7 0 What a game! A tough fight it was, in the center of the field for the most part, but the ball was on the Hamilton lO yard line when the final whistle blew Another clear cut victory for the Hornets! Burns now had a tough, hard hitting squad Conqueror! they were the best of our school in a decade. Then came the long trek to Moline, 90 long miles across the Flint H1lls A clear snappy November evening it was Superb blocking, crush lng line plunges, and skilled passing resulted in 33 points for the Hornets to the opponents none Elgin Hiebert at last had an educated toe The Hornet squad ended a most remarkable season with a no score tie at Hope The contest was fought out 1D the mud and snow. The opponents had a powerful team, but the Hornets held the line Don Gfeller broke loose once but was downed on the Hope twenty yard line The opponents held and the Burns threat was snuffed forever Tired, wet, muddy, but happy were the Hornets They had held the hlghly rated Hope team Local fans were proud of the1r boys On November 23 all squad members were invited to dine 1n the Metho dist Church basement as guests of dads and local fans What a feed After a revuew of the season's achievements and many words of prazse the record of the 1947 season was closed The squad of '48 w11l carry on the good work! - 1 O O ' . s ' e 9' . . . h 'e 'e crowd cheered, and following a blocked punt the Hornets scored.
