Put yourself in lJorotl1y's place and journey up a similar road - in this case, the road of knowledge-to a Burnham School diploma. First meet the administration of Oz, who direct, and guide the way along the perilous route. Tl1en stand with Dorothy and her friends as tl1cy watch the freshmen preparing with high aspirations for their long trip. VValk a little further and greet the more-exjmerieneed sophomores, who have already covered the first lap of their journey. Visit next with the hopeful juniors who have progressed a good way up the road, and are now in sight of their goal. Cover the last 1nile of yellow brick and pass with the wea1'y but triumphant seniors through the gates of the Emerald City. Venture into the heart of the city and observe the vitally important internal activities. Look at the various branches of the government: the Student Council, the House Councils, and the spirited publications, which aid in making Oz a democratic, efficient eountry. View tl1c social clubs where any one may lea1'n to sing, dance, or act., and, while thoroughly enjoying herself, lighten the difficult journey to knowledge. Do you hear the clash of wooden sticks or the sound of a bouncing ball, a shrill whistle, followed by frenzied cheering? Then hasten to the gym Where the various Oz teams are participating in a vigorous game of hockey or basketball. On other days you may find badminton birdies or a volley ball being hit over a net. If you look through the gym window, you may see a fast game of tennis or a lively squad of cheer leaders. These sports keep thc inhabitants of Oz physically tit, and academically keen. When you have finished reading this book, you will have seen what life in Oz - or Burnham - is like: you will have seen how each person studies, plays, and enjoys herself. The road through Oz does not always lead over sunny, flower-sprinkled hillsg sometimes this journey seems to follow gray valleys where brambles and uncertain ground make the going rough. But for those who survive the trip, new vistas are opened. As each inhabitant leaves Oz, she carries away charm, grace, and an introduction to knowledge, the promise of a profitable, enjoyable future. Although the class was only fourteen in number, they ahly proeeeded down the road with the help of their advisor, Miss Haltiwanger. As soon as they really started, they eleeted the officers which were to earry theni through their first year. Though small in stature, Melinda Gettin received the great honor of elass president. Sue 'l'aleott was trusted to keep wateh over the treasuryg Thehna Hanunond was handed the seeretary's hook in which to jot, down notes along the trip, and Peggy-.lo Prince was elected to St-udent Couneil. No sooner was the ery eup-eakes and ginger-ale heard than the trample of feet drowned it, out, as the starving upper-elassnien ran to seek nourish- ment. For the freshmen, however, the beginning of theirjourney through Oz was not all play. Une glance into the study hall showed thein ardently slaving over an algebra or Latin hook.
