When the whole town has turned out to welcome Billy, his easy-going, homeless pal, Cornelius Neeley Crum, fRonald 1-larpsterlis mistakenfor the hero.Neeley receives the cheers and adulation, untilthe Haskins family appears to straighten out the error, but not until Pamela Payne, Uoan Hamptonl, the college reporter has Whispered to Virginia, Uean Nloorel Billy's one-time s w e e thea rt, ab ou t Neeley's twhom she believes to be Billyl amorous inclinations. Complications pile one on top of the other when a local filling station is held up. Pamela elopes and Billy is sus- pected in both cases. Neeley turns up with two hundred dollars, the exact amountof the hold-up. Pop Haskins, fI..loyd Havicel and Smitty, QDorothy Betlyonl the maid are drawn onto the misunderstanding, However in the end everything turns out for the best, and the Haskins family basks in the re- flected glory of THE HERO.
