Scott Superintendent Congratulations on the outstanding year you had in 1988-891 Through your dedicated and conscientious efforts you have earned many honors and achieved much. Your accomplish- ments speak well for your school, your community and yourselves. This yearbook is a pictoral Journal of the many experiences, accomplishments and activities which you were a part of during the 1988-89 school year at Bumet High. In future years it will afford you much enjoyment as you reflect back to the 'good ole'' days and good times which you enjoyed with your classmates during the year. The high school years are some of the happiest and most fun filled days of our lives. During your high school years you developed many lifetime values and standards which set the course for the rest of your life. The educadon you obtain will provide you with the tools to become a useful and contributing member of society upon graduation. On behalf of all the teachers and administrators and support personnel of Bumet C.I.S.D. we wish the graduates of 1989 much success and happiness throughout your lives. To you underclass members we wish you the very best of luck and for continued success in all your educational and extracurricular activities as students of B.H.S. in your future years here. Sincerely, T. D. Scott Superintendent of Schools Dane Kerns Vice-Principal Bumet High School un- derwent several changes during the 1988-89 school year. 1 believe these changes have made our high school a better place to work and leam. I want to thank the students and faculty for a job well done. Dane Kerns Students and Faculty: The yearbook is an important publication for the high school and is appreciated by the students, faculty, and administration. It requires a tremendous effort by all the members of the annual staff to produce a work to remind us of the classes and events of the 1988-89 school year. Our students, staff, parents, and community have again contributed to a successful year for BHS. 1988-89 has seen a newspaper back in print, four track meets, and a host of other activities for our students. Many of our students, teams, and organizations have moved past the district level to represent us at the state level. This level of achievement would not have been possible without the cooperation and hard work of many individuals. Thanks to all who have helped make Bumet High School a special place. The Burnet Ensemble Theater Company was created in 1986 to give dramatically talented students a special group where they could practice their talents. Since then the B.E.T.C. has been entertaining grown-ups and children alike with their productions. This year has been no exception. After a rough start the students who made up the ensemble were able to pull together. In their fall production B.E.T.C. performed several duet acts along with scenes from the play The Bald Soprano. After the fall production, it was time to get ready for U.I.L. For the first time the students competed in duet acting. The highlight of the year came when all four acting teams captured the first four places at the Mason Tournament. Troy Wilson and Tiffany Enell took first, Jimmy Faulkner and Alice Pue captured second, Kama Urbantke and Dawn Fishbein took third, and Elva Curtis and Mike Edwards placed fourth. Even though they were not able to go on to regionals the B.E.T.C. students were very proud of their production of Arsenic and Old Lace. At District Robin Hunt received All-Star Cast while Tasha Thorp and Travis Cravey received Honorable Mention All-Star Cast. It's a fascinating experience to work with a group of students to achieve a common goal such as the production of a play, stated B.E.T.C. director Clara Bush. It is also a lot of fun. 1 remember when Mike Edwards tried to teach Tasha Thorp how to walk using a dime.' Also, among B.E.T.C. accomplishments is a first place winning video on Aids. The video was produced by Shannon Houlton and Tiffany Enell and was shown twice on Public T.V., Channel 18. Add to the list of accomplishments: A children's play performed for the elementary and the production of a first- ever Dinner Theater. The Dinner Theater featured a French Cuisine Buffet and the performance of the play Arsenic and Old Lace. Mrs. Bush ended with a statement concerning her oldest students. The B.E.T.C. So many mem- orable experiences have been shared by this team, and many are so personal and private that I wouldn't dare take them beyond our circle. Outwardly, those experiences can be seen in outstanding performances, especially at contest, where our prop routine was named Best in Class and overall we were rated 2nd of all 3A-4A schools. Prepared for State and ready to win this year, we were devastated to find out the competition had been cancelled. In that loss, however, came a success greater than any possible in contest. We discovered that the contest wasn't the thing after all; it was the dance. The dancing was what made us so happy, and the little, private successes were what made us work so hard; contest was no goal in itself, but a place to share our talent and our joy. And it is those moments that I cannot, and do not, want to share with anyone except the 15 who shared them with me. But take a look at all of the Highlandettes tonight, especially the seniors. You will see a kind of celebration in all of them, from a first year member whose imagination has just been sparked by a new art form, to three very special four year members who have chosen to make dance a very important part of their lives. Their grace and beauty are an inspiration to all future dancers. To me, they are three exquisite but- terflies, for I can remember back four years ago when they were just emerging from their cocoons. Dance has given them and all of us a special place to be who we are and to discover that we, too, can be butterflies. For us, Dancing is Everything! Shiela and Slndra wearing Spring Show shirts designed by Sandy Scott SENIOR MESSAGE 1989 Hlghlandettes this year has been an experience we will always remember. We have felt the feelings of accomplishment, especially In contest- yet, we nave also felt disappointment. The uniqueness of this team, the Individuality of each person and the dedication shown through every member make us a complete and complementary fam- 3. We are individuals who make up the unique feeling ONE. We are like the wind and rain; the sun ana moon, the land and sea which come together to form one world. Ms. Schule Is here for us, to direct us, to keep us in line, to support us, to love us and to help us reach our goals: we are there for Ms. Schule, to support her, to love her and to help her reach her goals. Being on the dance team Is an experience about One Moment In Time'' which we can laugh and cry. We thank our friends and families who supported us and helped us through this year. The 1988 football season proved not to be a year for the playoffs, but for the establishment of character, pride, and discipline. 1 believe what this team has contributed will be- come a positive step forward for those teams who will follow in the years to come. My deepest appreciation goes to the young men who practiced and played as champions re- gardless of their 3-7 record. BULLDOGS '88 I was pleased with the overall performance of the J.V. Football Team. We didn't have the num- bers (we finished the year with 14 players) but the boys played with lots of heart. Before district start- ed, the players showed determi- nation and pride and won all but one district game. I am proud of a job well done by the J.V. play- ers. Coach north The Freshman football finished the year with a 6-2 record and a district championship. They were challenged several times during the course of the year and responded like a true champion would have by never giving up. 1 am very proud of these young men and wish them luck. There was never a doubt in our minds that the 1988 volleyball team would make the playoffs, from the begin- ning of a two-a-days to the closing of the season, we worked as a team, striving to reach the goal we always set — state playoffs. On the road to success we won consolation in the Hamilton tournament, first in our Bumet tournament, and runner-up in district. Finally, we became bi-district cham- pions. We are very proud of our varsity ladies as well as those of the junior varsity and freshman teams for all of the hard work and dedication they gave to create a successful pro- gram. We wish the seniors good luck as they move on to other endeavors and we look forward to working with another group of persevering athletes. Even though we finished up 15-13, we had many close games that could have gone either way. The Varsity started off a little slow in district play, but picked up toward the end and ended up playing for second place in the district. The biggest highlight of the year was beating Marble Falls twice during the regular district play. The Junior Varsity and Freshman girls may not have had a great record, but they improved throughout the year. All coaches are looking forward to a great year next year, because we have the girls who will work hard. Coach Wall Cindy Benton 20 SR 5'5 F 111 ca H cu CD CQ - H So £ J.V. The Junior Varsity Lady Bulldogs fin ished the season with four wins and sixteen losses. Even though they did not have a winning record, the girls showed they had winning character by always giving 100% and working hard throughout the year. The girls gained much experience during the season and can look forward to contrib- uting a great deal to the basketball pro- gram in the years to come. Coach Drexler This was a building year for the fresh- men. They had a struggle at the first of the year, but through hard work and dedica- tion they improved. Their efforts should bring them great rewards later in high school. Keep up the good work. Coach Olson J.V.
