Food Service Office explodes some popular misconceptions about food: 1. Fish is brain food. No one has yet proved the theory that food high in protein make the mind more alert. But fish is low in fat, so it may be a heart healthy food. 2. Eating carrots improve eyesight. Not so. Carrots contain vitamin A, needed by eye tissues, but vitamin A can’t improve vision. 3. Garlic lowers blood pressure. Eating 8 to 10 cloves of garlic each day for several weeks might lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but think what this would do to your social life. 4. Brown eggs are superior to white. No nutritional difference. 5. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Would that it were true. 6. Vitamin C cures colds. Not proven. 7. Starchy foods are fattening. Not true. A small baked potato contains fewer than 100 calories, but watch the butter. 8. Athletes require huge amounts of protein. Only those involved in aerobics, and not much even then. Excess protein turns into fat, not muscle. 9. Chocolate aggravates acne. Only if there is a food allergy. 10. Afternoon fatigue is a sign of hypoglycemia. The fact that a candy bar in the afternoon picks you up is no sign of disease. We appreciate your participation in the Cafeteria, Snack Bar and Salad Bar.
