Wright Superintendent This country has now endured for over 200 years. Government has changed considerably over those 200 plus years. So has public schools education. Today, every politician or politician-to-be spouts his or her own brand of education reform. We have — today — many overnight education specialists. However, at least most people have come to recognize the importance of education and have started to demand that government put as much energy and money into educating our future citizens as it has been putting into excessive welfare and political “pork-barrel” programs. After 200 years of refinement there are still many contradictions in this society of ours. It’s not unusual — for example — for the guilty to walk away from a crime penalty free — often based on some sort of enlightened ultra-liberal quirk in the law. But, somehow, even inequities seem to work themselves out given enough time. All we really need to meet our educational and citizen goals for the year 2000 — only 12 years from now — are more competent citizens, more knowledgeable citizens, more educated citizens and a good old fashion work ethic. Given these things — all the dreams of educational improvement will fall into place. George T. Wright Bonnie Fawcett, Secretary; Mary Williams, Bookkeeper; Sheryl Read, Bookkeeper. Lonnie Seipp Principal Congratulations to the annual staff and Mrs. Smith for their dedication and hard work in the preparation of this year’s annual. I am very proud of the attitude of the students and faculty at BHS. I hope everyone will benefit from their time spent here in preparation for the future. Thanks to all for making this such a great place to work. Lonnie Seipp My wife and I are pleased that we made the decision to move to Burnet. The people in the town and the school system make it a great place to work. I would like to commend the faculty and students of Burnet High School for their hard work and accomplishments this year. I would also like to wish everyone luck and happiness in the future. Food Service Office explodes some popular misconceptions about food: 1. Fish is brain food. No one has yet proved the theory that food high in protein make the mind more alert. But fish is low in fat, so it may be a heart healthy food. 2. Eating carrots improve eyesight. Not so. Carrots contain vitamin A, needed by eye tissues, but vitamin A can’t improve vision. 3. Garlic lowers blood pressure. Eating 8 to 10 cloves of garlic each day for several weeks might lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels, but think what this would do to your social life. 4. Brown eggs are superior to white. No nutritional difference. 5. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. Would that it were true. 6. Vitamin C cures colds. Not proven. 7. Starchy foods are fattening. Not true. A small baked potato contains fewer than 100 calories, but watch the butter. 8. Athletes require huge amounts of protein. Only those involved in aerobics, and not much even then. Excess protein turns into fat, not muscle. 9. Chocolate aggravates acne. Only if there is a food allergy. 10. Afternoon fatigue is a sign of hypoglycemia. The fact that a candy bar in the afternoon picks you up is no sign of disease. We appreciate your participation in the Cafeteria, Snack Bar and Salad Bar. However, four years ago our program's goal was to be a district champion by this year. We were pre-season favorites by many polls and runner-up choice irt others. All three KEY games (Early, Marble Falls, and Lampasas) were on the road. Following an 0-2-1 start, our ‘‘DAWGS” went undefeated the remainder of the regular season. A second winning season, a play-off berth, and a district CHAMPIONSHIP were earned. Pride, Dedication, Sacrifice, Commitment, and most importantly CHARACTER enabled us to accomplish our goals. We thank all who supporjpd us an hope you received as much joy from our season as vpe did. The Seniors of 1988 have left our trow athletic complex undefeated and with its firj pistrict Championship. Volleyball team. These diverse personalities and talents quickly established a tradition of unity based on individual hard work and dedication. Their successful season (21-10) confirms their esprit de corps. Highlights of the season include winning second in the Burnet and Gatesville tournament, third in Robinson. All tournament honors were won by Melinda Gholson in Gatesville and Michelle Solsbery in Robinson. After becoming the district champs; the girls won bi-district and became area finalists. Q MOC The 1987-1988 season was season of constant change and improvement. This team had two things against them from day one — inexperience and lack of height. They recognized this and worked hard to overcome them. We as coaches saw this improvement in defense and the desire to work as a team. Every game they learned and improved both on offense and defense. This con- tinued all through the season. The last game we played, I believe, was the best game we played. The girls can always be proud of that. I know we will. One thing we will remember about this team — when we were announced before a game, the opposing team neuer knew who our post were because we were all the same size — short . . . Coach Collins Coach Abernathy This team will always be special to me. Their de- termination and desire to improve themselves on the court and in their lives, stands as an example to any athlete. We finished off the year with about twice as many participants as last season, with several swimmers doing quite well. In addition to the regular meets, we completed the season with the Burnet State Meet with two swimmers placing in their events and the team coming in second in the 4A and under di- vision. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the team and everyone involved for their effort and dedication. Jay Templeton 1988 DISTRICT CHAMPS Back Row: Coach Quintana. Coach Massingill. The 1988 Varsity Baseball team was the epitome of the title “Junk Yard Dogs.” This team scrapped burnet and clawed their way to being represented in the 12 baseball circles. The leadership and willingness to 3 apply good fundamentals was the key to their sue- 12 cess. If patience is a virtue, then this team was virtuous. Although our road to success was slow 5 and shaky, Steve and Chris offered us exceptional 9 pitching, and the dedicated reserves or substitutes ® cannot be described any other way but TEAM 11 BULLDOGS! Thanks guys! Coach Massingill pro- 12 vided the team with an aggressive style of baserun- 22 ning which proved to be a difference in several of 3 our games. Thanks Coach! The completion of the Sports Complex, and the state play-offs, are only a few of the great things that happened to BHS. The 1988 track team did a super job! The seniors provided great leadership and everyone responded by doing their part to complete a very succesful season. All the seniors can leave knowing that they won the inaugural Burnet Relays, and in the process set 7 meet records. They won the Bluebonnet Relays, and then in front of the home crowd won the District 8-AAA Championship. The only goal that was not realized that everyone wanted to attain was, to participate in the State Meet. Good Luck to the seniors, we ll miss you. For those returning, let s successfully defend the district crown. Coach Walzel Varsity Girls Track The girls track team had another outstanding year. The team finished second in three meets and won championships at Llano and the district meet. The team outscored second place Lampasas 144-88 while winning its second consecutive championship. This joy we share is evident in everything the group has done this year They have sacrificed much to do what they love most. Three special young ladies gave up a month of their summer to learn a lyrical dance for my college choreography class. The whole team gave up the two sun bathing, school shopping weeks at the end of August to practice skills and learn football and pep rally routines. And every day after school they worked for hours to make those routines the best ever. As soon as football season ended, our hardest work began — CONTEST! They eagerly welcomed the challenging routines and endured long hours of practice, even on weekends. Following contest preparations for Highlights’’ went into full swing. It seems we never stop! But all the work and sacrifices will not be remembered without the cherished moments they helped us achieve. Those three who helped me with my class will never forget the beaming face of my college professor last summer as she told them their performance was “BEAU-TI-FUL! All fifteen Highlandettes can probably still remember the pride they felt as they sat perfectly poised and still on their musical notes’’ before giving a flawless performance at the Marble Falls football game. And Sweepstakes at the Hill Country Classic speaks for itself. Getting all I s, Best in Class for our table routine, and qualifying for State Competition were all ‘‘firsts’’ for us. So was going to State, where we earned a Silver plaque. These accomplishments required more work than ever before, but I bet if you ask the young ladies who are proud to be Highlandettes of 87-88, they will all tell you that they wouldn' have settled for anything less! Through their love of dance, the Highlandettes have made many great memories for all of us, especially me. However, my fondest memory is not of any award winning performance or first time accomplishment. Instead, it is special gift from the team. When I returned to school after an illness, they surprised me with a performance they had worked on all week just for me. will never forget the love and pride we all shared that day, for dance and for each other. The recipients of this award embody the idea of scholastic excellence. To receive this honor, the students must attain 85 or better average for all classes I am pleased to honor the winners of the Presidential Academic Fitness Award for 1988, the fifth year of our program to recognize outstanding scholastic achievement among America's young people. The three million young men and women who have received the award exemplify those attributes that make for better students and better citizens. Your success paints a bright picture for our country’s future, and your fine example of what can be accomplished through hard work, dedication, and development of the mind will be a lasting inspiration to your fellow students. You, your parents, and your teachers should take pride in the standard of excellence you've set, and I want you all to know that I’m proud of you, as well.
