Texas History and U.S. History scholars will tell you that we are one of the youngest nations — and youngest states — in the world. Americans — Texans — have enjoyed a truly large measure of individual freedom over the short years of our history. But we should be ever aware. Indicators over the years are that we tend to take our freedom for granted — as if it had always been that way — and — as if it always will be. Unless we become more diligent, more aware, more active, more knowledgeable — we are going to give up additional freedoms without so much as a whimper. Abraham Lincoln once stated, “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.” Honest Abe might be shocked today. I am reasonably certain my great grandparents and my grandparents would be equally shocked today. I’m saying this. Get informed — get involved. Know what the issues are. When you get to the voting age, know what you are voting for and why. An ignorant vote is worse than no vote at all!
