Wright, Jolene Mock, Camm Lary Jr. This great state is a mere 150 years old. Texas History and U.S. History scholars will tell you that we are one of the youngest nations — and youngest states — in the world. Americans — Texans — have enjoyed a truly large measure of individual freedom over the short years of our history. But we should be ever aware. Indicators over the years are that we tend to take our freedom for granted — as if it had always been that way — and — as if it always will be. Unless we become more diligent, more aware, more active, more knowledgeable — we are going to give up additional freedoms without so much as a whimper. Abraham Lincoln once stated, “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.” Honest Abe might be shocked today. I am reasonably certain my great grandparents and my grandparents would be equally shocked today. I’m saying this. Get informed — get involved. Know what the issues are. When you get to the voting age, know what you are voting for and why. An ignorant vote is worse than no vote at all! So from the beginning, the pressure was on to do well. I could tell a difference in practices — the determination, commitment, and dedication needed to win were mirrored in the faces of our team. Saturday practice was a new addition this year. Though these sessions were unpopular in the beginning, as a coach, I never heard a complaint. The girls knew, as I did, that we all have to make individual sacrifices to achieve team goals. I’m also proud of our team, and they were just that, a TEAM. They encouraged each other and supported each other. Sometimes that’s not easy. I’d like to thank the SENIORS of 1986. They showed great leadership qualities. They were excellent examples to all of the girls in athletics. They really demonstrated what it takes to be winners! They were the force that brought Burnet Girls Basket- ball out of the mediocrity of 11-12 seasons to a 19-9 season, a district title unheard of since 1978, and left next year’s varsity the challenge to not only match their achievement but to exceed it. Though Karen faced many setbacks during the year, she kept on pushing herself to extremes; to her goal, to swim in college. After placing 5th in backstroke and 8th in butterfly at regionals, she certainly proved herself to Burnet High School. Other achievements include breaking numerous pool records and scoring 2nd or 3rd in the State Swim Meet. Without her leadership and constant striving for excellence, I know I would not have had the motivation to go on. They per- formed a Christmas concert, consisting of traditional songs for the triple “L” club at the First Baptist Church in Burnet. The choir also sang and performed as a show choir in the Highlandette Spring Show Highlights. There was also the performance at the High School Band’s Spring Concert. Many fund raising projects have also been part of the choir’s ac- tivities, including a high school dance sponsored jointly with the Student Council. A lip sync contest was the highlight of the dance. The majority of these activities would not have been possible if the choir had not increased in size. Back in May when the drill team for this year was selected, I was concerned because over three-fourths of the members were brand new. What I didn’t realize, however, was something that became increasingly more apparent as the summer progressed. During all the bake sales, dance clinics, summer camps, and finally, our own camp at the end of August, one feeling prevailed over the group; it was love. I felt then, and ever since, that these young ladies truly love what they are doing in Highlandettes. Because of them, my work with the drill team this year has been one of the most exciting and rewarding experiences of my life. Yes, this has been a year of learning and beginning, but the 1985-86 Highlandettes also strived for and achieved excellence. 115 Fox Real Estate 7ewuf zeatcve When you want dependability, knowledge and hard work on your side.
