For some, this hard work paid off in way of a trip to the Regional Tournament in Odessa. For others it mode a foundation to work from for the '86 Tennis season. I thoroughly enjoyed the year and feel confident that those Freshmen will have a good year in '86. Thanks Coach Collins Row 1 - Eric Phillips. Amy Ellerr, Michelle Mosley Dono Allen. House Dill 246 and 72 started changes which will be felt for years to come Alreody many feel some changes were good — others not so good — and a few simply bad. Whatever your personal opinions, the fact remains we must work within rhe laws, rules and regula- tions to make our schools rhe very best possible. This was rhe intent of rhe new legislation and the Burnet Schools will work hard to implement this intent. As for you — the student — it is obvious you must rake your education seriously. There are mony ac- tivities you may want to participate in. However, your basic academics always come first. From this standpoint HD 72 forces schools to do what they should have been doing anyway. That is — emphosize a good solid basic education first. Life in today's society is more and more complex. Unless we all do our part to prepare our leaders and citizens of rhe future a dynamic democracy such as ours cannot survive. But, we must also temper and balance our quest for excellence in the academics with adequate provisions for fun, relaxation, en- joyment and rhe appreciation of friendly competition in rhe exrracurriculars. This is your Durnet Schools goal — to combine excellence in the academics and the mony benefits of the exrracurriculars into a successful combination to provide a well rounded, useful, wholesome, honest citizen. Working together as teachers, parents, students, board members, support staff ond administrators we can and will achieve this goal. £ George T Wright Superintendent Jft Use Sc Congrorulorions again ro the Annual Staff and sponsor for a difficult job well done. I'm sure students and faculty will appreciate your effort for years to come. With the school reforms and added emphosis on ocodemics this year our faculty and student body are to be commended for their positive attitude and response. This bools will be a reminder of the many successful and pleasant events at Burnet High School during the 1965-86 school year. Cliff Vandeventer Principal Colorado University It has been my privilege to serve as Assistant Prin- cipal at Burnet High School this year. Burnet High 5chool was one of several Texas schools to participate in the program this year. With 85 Seniors, parents, and spon- sors doing the work and the Burnet community responding so well with donations and help, the program was suc- cessful and safe. It consisted of a dinner, dance, lock-in, and breakfast, and we are groteful to all of the people that helped make it work. 79 wmm 1985 SCHOLASTIC AWARD5 NIGHT PARTICIPANTS Deonne Abel Kenr Acheson Shelly Arnold Angela Atkinson Jeff Austin Kim Baker Rudy Bolodez Donna Barnett Gina Barrow Krystal Benson Jim Benton Noncy Betty Steven Bird Robert Brodshaw Cindy Bristow Cody Bristow Jamie Burkett Karen Cagle Jerry Coin Rhonda Castillo Klinr Champlin Allison Chism Ken Chism Amy Christian Grady Coberly Candace Coen Lisa Cokendolpher Shown Cole Becky Colson Amonda Cook Lisa Cowon John Crosson Parry Culler Kevin Didway Debbie Dodson Brent Dollar Tim Duncan Coquina Dunn Billy Easterling 5usan Eaton Kendo Edwards Amy Ellerr Porrick Escamilla Darren Everett Logon Faris Clint Farmer Christi Ferguson Doug Ferguson Brian Fix Angelo Frank Lori Frank Becky Franklin Melinda Gholson Lori Greenlees Jason Hahn Tommy Hairgrove Kiki Hordilek William Haskell Donnie Haynes Chris Hehr Diana Hernandez Jody Hernandez Shannon Higgins Susan Highsmirh James Hornsby Judy Hornsby Stephanie Huff Daniel Huggins Jocquelin Hyman Jennifer Hyman Angie Jackson Buffy Jockson Cheryl Johnson Jock Johnson John Kay Kevin Kennedy Patty King DeWayne Kunkel Jeff Lay Mike Legg Kenneth Lirtlepage Kathy Lopes Suzonne Lucas Lanny McCurry Kim McKinnon Johnny Mara Dawn Miller Robert Millican John Moilonen Chris Monrog Tabitha Morrow Michelle Mosley Laura Morioch Mary Mulhollon Dale Myers MaLynda Myers Diane Neighbor Judie Neill Rosa Ontiveros Mike Owen Wesley Palmer Amira Parel Shawn Patterson Julie Pough Chris Peek Eric Phillips Melisso Porterfield Cindy Rorliff Kristy Rhine Bubbo Riley Cathy Ritchie David Robinson Melanie Roden Lorrie Roemer Mike Rouse Sherri Rylonr Terri Rylant Steven Salinas Toni Sandoval Kim Schilling Borbora Schreiber Roscoe Scott Emily Shannon Joe Show Lisa Shelley Amy Smith Christi 5mirh Todd Smith Michelle Snotic Michelle Solsbery Shannon Steele Mindy Stringer Amy Torian Becky Ussery Valerie Valodez Bobby Wade Harden Wallace John Warden Lori Warwick Scott White Carol Wiggins Melissa Wilcox Lonnie Wilkes Shawn Willett Koren Willhelm Mitzi Williams Vera Williams Denton Wills Robin Wilson Lyle Wright Shelley Wright Lisa Zinz 60 CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUB5CLUB5CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUB5 CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS CLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBSCLUBS BHS AIDES OFFICE Row 1 — Mrs. L. Preparation for these contests is done out of class, which means that what might have been spare rime for them was instead devoted to practice and to going to several weekend tournaments. Jock Johnson competed in persuasive speaking. In this contest he is given thirty minutes to prepare a speech dealing with a current news event on the State, National, or International Level. He must then spend no more than 7 minutes convincing the judge to accept his point of view. Ms. Chris Ferguson is the advisor who assisted Jack. Kiki Hordilek was our representative for the science contest. She rook tests that were divided into 3 sections — Chemistry, Biology, and Physics. Mr. Billy Cardwell was her advisor. Borbro Schrieber ondJohn Moilonen worked with Mrs. Jill Ringstaff on number sense. A very short contest — only ten minutes — in mental mathematics. The only thing they can write down is the answer; All the figuring has to be done in their heads. For spelling and plain writing the contestants ore given a list of about a thousand words to study. At the contest, they are given 120 words at the rate of 1 every 12 seconds. In other words, if they don't know how to spell them, they don't have rime to think. Down Miller Corol Wiggins 6th in district Shelly Arnold 4rh in district Alternate to region Mrs. Suzanne Perkins is the advisor for those in spelling. Ready writing required the students to write an essay on one of two topics given them at the beginning of the two-hour contest time. Their papers are evaluated for content, organization, and grammar. Working with Mrs. Margaret Fry this year were Kim McKinnon, Jomie Burkett, who rook sixth place at district, and Amy Smith, who took third place in district and therefore compered in region. Journalism involves four contests — Newswriting, Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, and Headline Writing. This year a pilot contest in sports writing was included. Robin Wilson compered in Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, and Newswriring. Judie Neill took sixth place in the Feature Writing contest and also entered the Newswriring and Sportswriting. Brent Collor — who couldn't be here tonight — rook 3rd place in Sports Writing. 2nd place in Feature Writing, and 1st place in Newswriting. He therefore went to region in both Feature and Newswriring. Jomie Burkett won first place in Editorial Writing at district and fourth place at region, which made her an alternate to the State competition in Austin. The typing contest is open only to those currently enrolled in their first year of typing. In the district contest this year we had Lyle Wright, Angie Jockson, Condoce Coen, and Kim McKinnon. Kim took third place in district and then went to region in Odessa and won first place, which qualified her to compete in State Contest in Austin. Those who make state are in the top 1% of typists who entered the contest originally. Ms. Margaret Smith is the typing teacher. 97 DR m CLUB Row 1 - M Rouse R Scorr D Dovis, W Haskell Row 2 - R Hudmon. S Welch, K Owens, 5 Edwards 5. Huff. K Denson.
