FACULTY Did 1 pass?” 11 ADMINISTRATION My first year as your Superintendent has been enjoyable and rewarding. Together we have achieved many good things and I look forward to more achievements in the coming year. My philosophy as an educator is rather simple — but, I believe in it. We are in public education for one primary purpose: Give students the knowledge, understanding, comprehension, values, skills, and discipline to go into a complex society and succeed in being a valuable, contributing, happy member of a representative Democratic society. Everything we do in education should be done with that fundamental purpose in mind. In every decision we make we should always ask o-rselves: 1) Is it the truth? 2) Is it fair? 3) Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4) Is it beneficial? 5) Is it ethical? If all of us (school staff, students, and parents) follow these guidelines we can continue to make our schools even better. Excellence in education always has been — and always will be — a cooperative effort. George T. Wright SCHOOL BOARD ROW 1 — P. Mosley (Sec.), G. Taylor (Pres.), E. B. Price (V. Pres.) ROW 2 — G. This year the Student Council initiated a Campus Beautification Project to provide a more attractive and pleasant atmosphere for the school and to foster a sense of pride throughout the student body. The creation of an “outdoor commons” area between the gym and main building is the first goal of the pro- ject, and the installation of tables and benches began in the spring. A live oak was also planted in the open area in front of the main entrance. The Student Council hopes that this beginning will draw various campus clubs and many in- dividuals into a long-range effort to maintain and enhance everyone’s idea of the campus as a place to learn and a place to enjoy the company of others. The Leo and Drafting Clubs have already given their encouragement and sup- port to the plan, and Mr. Vandeventer, through his work with the Council and the School Board, made it possible for us to get off the ground financially. Home Economics Cooperative Education is designed to give students job skills and on-the-job training. Students work in areas related to homemaking. These students learn to manage their time and money, combine school and work schedules, work with others, keep accurate records, and become more mature, independent, and responsible. In addition, they learn skills related to their job which can be used as an occupation after high school or open the door for advanc- ed training in college. C rr X rr C rr r . HECE . . . HECE . . . The Future Teachers of America accomplished a great deal in the year 1981-82. For Flalloween, several FTA members filled decorated sacks for each teacher. For Thanksgiving, they raffled tickets for a turkey and for Christmas, they decorated a door. Each FTA member must earn credits in order to be allowed to attend the field trip. This can be done by grading papers for teachers or by helping at the career day or other FTA projects. This year, the field trip was at U.T. in Austin. Row 1: (L to R) A. Webb, D. Hazlewood. T. Contestants Each year a number of students put forth extensive individual ef- fort to compete in the UIL literary and academic contests. After weeks of preparation, they travel to practice tournaments to try their skills against students of other schools. Some of the contests are based on skills learned in the classroom; others require special effort and preparation far beyond the normal course requirements. First year typing students compete against each other in speed and ac- curacy. Representing BHS this year were Terri Ashabranner, Allen Fisher, Debbie Haynes, Kathy Hunziker, and Lisa Wills. Also, competing in a speaking event were the debate teams of David Blair and Patrick Shell and Richard Seibert and Bill Price. After preparing their cases in Mr. Don Yager’s speech class, the teams refined their delivery and rebut- tal skills in various contests and brought home several trophies. Laura Eckert, Brian Kirkpatrick, and Tommy Peek competed in the four types of writing required in jour- nalism. In district. Tommy placed third in News Writing and fourth in Headline Writing. Brian placed fifth in News Writing; Laura was fifth in Feature Writing and sixth in Editorial Writing. To compete in Number Sense, Beatrix Elliott, Leslie Fry, Karen Palmer, and Raymond Ybarra worked with Mrs. Jill Ringstaff to learn the many tricks of mental mathematics. In their contest, all they could write down was the answer to the math problems. No figuring on paper was allowed. In the opposite direction, Robbin Hornsby increased her speed in solving problems with the calculator. John Garcia, James Montag, and George Oakley prepared for a Science test of fifty objective questions covering biology, chemistry, physics, and the earth sciences. 36 UIL Contestants To compete in poetry interpretation and prose interpretation, Beatrix Elliott, Lynn Taylor, Leslie Fry and Patricia Lewis worked for many hours with Mrs. Ann Price to perfect their selections from each of three categories. They not only won awards, but also learned to capture an audience. In district, Trixie won second place in poetry; Patricia and Leslie won second and third places in prose. Skill in writing themes won Bill Price, Wynn Allen and An- drea Burleson the first, fourth and fifth places in the district competition in Ready Writing. Gloria Flores, Shelly Mulhollan and Angela Schreiber studied a long list of words for the Spelling and Plain Writing contest. Bill Price and Tommy Peek took their writing skills to region competition in Brenham. Bill represented the district in Ready Writing and Tommy wrote in both News and Headline Writing contests. Our competitors in Prose and Poetry Inter- pretation won in the preliminary competitions and made it into the finals in Region contests in Brenham. 37 CHEERLEADERS 81-82 38 HIGHLANDETTES 81-82 Row 1: Capt. The Band was also well represented in the UIL Solo and Ensemble competition. The Band was also busy in matters other than UIL musical events. They sold Calenders, and performed at the Chili Supper. This year the Band went to Branson, Missouri to attend the Silver Dollar City Band Festival and saw the Shepperd of the Hills play. The Band ended an eventful year with their annual Spring Concert. Twirlers: Gina Green, Sara Null; Drum Major: Randy Chafin Who’s Who in Music: Top: Bryan Barnett, Linnie Owens, Leland Reynolds, Mary Bird; Bottom: Leslie Fry, Mary Foss, Sara Null, Randy Chafin. Band Sweetheart: Linnie Owens HIGELANDETTES TUCy’RE PLAyiNG CUR SCNG The Highlandettes overcame a few obstacles to have a successful year in 1981-82. Functioning without a faculty advisor from basketball season throughout the remainder of the year, the drill team was able to carry on with its usual duties. The Highlandet- tes performed at basketball games and put on a well-received Spring Show. Long hours of hard practice were imperative in preparation for the show. The girls’ cooperation and effort paid dividends when the show was a success and they were very proud of their accomplishment. A lot of participation from other students added welcome variety to the show with twelve of the eighteen acts performed by other members of the Burnet Student body. Of the fifty students who contributed their talent to make the show a success, the sixteen Highlandettes carried their share by providing six numbers. They would like to thank all of those involved and especially Jan Ray, who became our chaperone and sponsor. 46 Mr J are V°u surc I’m so embarrassed. this is right? There were many superb team efforts, as well as several outstanding individual performances during the season. The girls had a season of 12 wins and 12 losses. The district record was 4 and 5. The girls won first place in the Burnet Tournament. Receiving all tourney awards were Annie McKinley and Shelly Field. The girls also won second place in the Belton Tournament. Coach Olson J.V. Row 3: Karla Reich, Julie Heffington, Tracy Rhine, Kathleen Neighbor, Michele Camper, Mikki Tippie The J.V., being shared by both coaches had to adjust to different personalities. During the course of the season they increased in their knowledge and skill of basketball tremendously. We look forward to next year when some of these players will be playing varsity ball for the Bulldogs. The J.V. won second place in the Belton J.V. Tournament and finished the season with a win against Dripping Springs to bring their season record to 11 wins and 11 losses. 102 Coach Olson Coach Atkinson The Freshmen girls had an up and down season. Throughout the year they worked hard to improve their skills and stayed motivated even after a few trying defeats. A few players were stronger than others, but as a whole, the team work- ed well together. The girls won second place in the Mason Tournament. They ended the season with a win, making the season record 6 and 7. A steady progression of in- dividual improvement and the development of a strong team concept enabled us to finish the season with a very positive outlook for next year’s varsity. B A S K E T B A L L The Freshman team improved remarkably during the course of the season. They worked diligently to conform to our philosophy of basketball. Consequently they began to work better as a cohesive unit. I have a special rapport with these kids stemming from football and they in turn, made my first year coaching here at Burnet a pleasurable and rewarding experience. The girls improved throughout the year winn- ing second in the Marble Falls Tournament as well as the Burnet and District Tournaments. Only one senior will be leav- ing so next year looks promising. BOYS VARSITY Throughout the year the boy’s varsity team had many changes. But toward the end of the season some consistency was found. This is reflected in that the number one doubles team (Russell Warren and Mark Rhoads) and singles (Rodney Fike) travel to the Regional Meet in Brenham. I feel they have a good chance of competing well in the Regional Tournament. Regional Qualifiers J.V. TENNIS Overall the J.V. team did really well considering they were all Freshmen and lacked in playing experience. There will be few openings on the var- sity next year.
