BULLDOG 1978 BURNET HIGH SCHOOL BURNET, TEXAS VOLUME XXI Faculty Page 3 Students Page 9 Organizations Page 29 Sports Page 57 Personalities Page 87 Activities Page 97 Spirit, Pride, and Honor (This Isa Bulldog) Spirit, Pride and Honor: Not just three words, but a meaning that needs all three. If one word is forgotten or ignored, it’s like a tricycle without one wheel, it just doesn't work well. Spirit: is a word that says. Go Hand in Hand All The Way. Pride: is a word that says. We Back You Win or Lose. Honor: is a word that says, We’ll do What’s Right Regardless of Our Situation. Having great Spirit and dignified Pride will assist us in finding Honor in the words, Burnet High School. . . . . . and being glad to say, “You better believe I’m a Bulldog!” Dean Crow — Junior What is a Bulldog? 1. A person who takes pride in our school. 2. A person who isn’t afraid to show spirit at any time. 3. Someone who backs our teams 100%. 4. Someone who doesn’t try to run the whole school by himself. 5. Someone who doesn’t take advantage of his friends. 6. A Bulldog doesn’t damage school property. Amy Greenlees — Soph. A “TRUE BULLDOG” is a person who feels inside that he or she honestly believes that Burnet High has been, is, and always will be the school with out- standing opportunities, the best Pride, Honor, and Spirit a school can have, and the greatest students anywhere. A “TRUE BULLDOG” is PROUD to be a part of Burnet High School and wants to participate in many activities in order to become a well-adjusted citizen. “Granny B” Barton A Bulldog is: Someone who attends ballgames and pep-rallies to show SPIRIT. Someone who has PRIDE. . . . and someone who participates in school activities to give his school HONOR. Roger Fox — Soph. What is a Bulldog? A Bulldog is someone who really cares about his fellowman and is willing to help when he can. A Bulldog is interested and active in the school’s func tions, and tries to do his best in them. Being a Bulldog means taking pride in our school, and making it a place to be proud of. A Bulldog is an all-around WINNER! Mr. Vandeventer can solve almost any problem you may have. He gets you to class on time, makes sure D-hall is well attended, and sees to it that the school runs as smoothly as possible. We couldn't do without him! The school counselor is the one to see to check on credits, IQ tests, colleges, or job opportunities. Mrs. Burkett not only sees to it that we have our share of darkening in little circles but also tries hard to keep us working so we'll get to walk across that stage come graduation. Excuses, excuses! Mrs. Scruggs and Mrs. Heffington have heard all kinds — from real hardship cases (“I didn’t have any clothes to put on!”) to fantastic forgeries (“Please excuse my child's absence. I didn’t want to go to school yesterday.”) BHS Secretary Ann Scruggs BHS Counselor Billie Burkett BHS Secretary Jan Heffington T A K E U S T O Y O U R L E A D E R 5 B.H.S. Geniors WE MAY NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN Life — so they say Is but a game and they let it slip away Love — like the Autumn sun Should be dying but it's only just begun Like the twilight in the road ahead They don’t see just where we’re goin’ And all the secrets in the universe Whisper in our ears and all the years will come and go And take us up — always up We may never pass this way again Dreams — so they say Are for the fools and they let them drift away Peace — like the silent dove Should be flyin’ but it’s only just begun Like Columbus in the olden days We must gather all our courage Sail our ships out on the open sea Cast away our fears and all the years will come and go And take us up — always up We may never pass this way again So I wanna laugh while the laughin’ is easy I wanna cry if it makes it worthwhile I may never pass this way again That’s why I want it with you ’Cause you make me feel like I’m more than a frrend Like I’m the journey and you’re the journey’s end I may never pass this way That’s why I want it with you baby We may never pass this way again By Seals and Crofts UNDERCLASSMEN — Class of 79 ■ Juniors Juniors Scott Augustine Todd Alan Davenport — Chaplain Lynn Whyburn — Secretary Treasurer Donald Glover — President 40 Jane Hays — Sponsor This year’s highlight for the BHS Choir was their participation in the Southwest Choral Festival in Galveston May 4-6. At this festival, the choir received a 1 st division rating in the performance of their 3 selections and 6 1 st division medals in the festival’s Solos and Ensembles Competition. Those receiving medals were Donald Glover, Lisa Dilbeck (2), L ura Chism, Leslie Petkovsky, and Blenda Schilling. A formal Christmas Concert, several bake sales, a rummage sale, and two dances were sponsored to raise funds to attend the festival. Donald Glover, a senior and this year’s choir president, was the second BHS choir member to be selected by a series of auditions to the Texas All State Choir. He performed at and attended the Texas Music Educators’ Conference as a member of the All State Choir. Our Choir has come a long way since its beginning five years ago. It has had two of its members chosen for the All State Choir. Members in the All Area, All Region, and All District choirs attended the Galveston Southwest Choral Festival for the first time. These are memorable events and they have made this year a most special one for the BHS choir. Jane Hays ALL-DIST. We would also like to thank Mrs. Callaway and Mrs. Elzey for proofreading our pages. A most sincere thanks to Mrs. Smith for furnishing us with lemon tea on those long afternoons spent after school hours, her proofreading, and her ever constant concern that kept pushing us along to meet our deadlines. A special thanks to our Taylor representative, Jim Anderson, who helped us improve our annual in so many ways. We wish to thank everyone who contributed in making the publication of this annual possible. The 1978 Bulldog was printed by Taylor Publishing Company, Dallas, Texas, on 70 pound embossed Saxmark enamel paper. The press run on the 144 page Bulldog was 350 copies. All copy is printed in 82 Helvetica. The cover, designed by the Bulldog staff with the assistance of Jim Anderson, is a whirlpool grain on 332 green.
