BULLDOG 1973 1 Burnet High School Burnet, Texas DEDICATION HENRY MIKE HERNANDEZ, JR. - Junior This 1972-73 BURNET BULLDOG ANNUAL is respectively dedicated to the memories of ... HENRY MIKE HERNANDEZ, Jr. born February 22, 1956, died December 30, 1972 AND MONTY RAY SCOTT born September 4, 1956 died March 13, 1973 Henry and Monty will be remembered not only for their friendly smile, sincere ways, thought- fulness, and athletic abilities, but also for their intense pride in being a part of BURNET HIGH SCHOOL. They will always be remembered and deeply missed. MONTY RAY SCOTT - Junior AWAY ... James Whitcomb Riley I cannot say, and 1 will not say That he is dead. He is just away! With a cherry smile and a wave of the hand. He has wandered into an unknown land. And left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you-oh you, who the wildest yearn For the old time step and the glad return - Think of him faring on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; And loyal still, as he gave the blows Of his warrior strength to his country's foes - Mild and gentle, as he was brave, When the sweetest love of his life he gave To simple things; where the violets grew Pure as the eyes they were likened to. The touches of his hands have strayed As reverently as his lips have prayed; When the little brown thrush that harshly chirred Was dear to him as the mocking-bird; And he pitied as much as a man in pain A writhing honey-bee wet with rain. Think of him still as the same, I say: He is not dead - he is just away! 2 CONTENTS 8 u R N c T H 1 C M  V V HIGH SCHOOL p. 8-p. 143 INTERMEDIATE p. 144—p. 171 ELEMENTARY p. 172-p. 199 SPIRIT Theresa Mallet and the Mystery Man I How much SPIRIT could you afford. Perhaps best of all you will be reminded again of the many friends you have at Burnet High School. We wish you well! Robert F. Wilkin ROBERT F. WILKIN, Superintendent VERY SPECIAL 9 Poem by - Concha Reyes There were times when you wished you could get your hands on some of the teachers Oh ... how you would like to break their necks. Then there were times, you loved them for being so understanding. Moments of warmth and kindness. Two hearts working for the same purpose — EDUCATION. There were times when out of hot pressure, you'd call them names under your breath. There were times you couldn’t hide your anger so you'd say it in another language. Then came the time, when you had cooled off, being your pleasant self again, that you discovered that your teacher also knew the language. ... YET you wondered why he had kept his cool, and had not said a word. You wondered what kind of person he could be, to withstand all this pressure. And then you ask yourself WHY? WHY, had you not been strong enough to do the same. I guess that's what makes them sort of S P E C I A L ... There were times when you’d have a personal problem, and couldn't get your mind on your work. There were times that out of depression and frustration, you’d take it out on them, wishing they'd drop DEAD. Then came the time that they offer to help in any way they could to make it easier on you. 131 There were times when your worst weakness had come upon you in a certain class. AND your grades rolled next to your name of the grade-book, forming little zeros. You would blame it on him, for not being a good teacher, cut him down, to look good in front of your friends ... Then came the time that he offered to help you, help you understand, help you improve your grades, help you make it through those days. Using up his conference period, lunch period, and even his unpaid time after school. Just for you, just to help YOU ... AND yet, you wondered, what kind of person he could be. Does he really care?, after all the terrible mean things you have said about him. Then you think back, it's not the first time. He’s helped you 12 years. 12 years of hard pressure, 12 years of understanding, 12 years of putting up with some people, who only think of themselves. 12 years to see a part of THEMSELVES graduate from this school. 1 GUESS THAT’S WHAT MAKES THEM VERY SPECIAL ... 132 FACULTY ’73 133 RAY FRADY EMMA JEWEL GOODWIN GLYNN HILL JIM FRANK BYRD N T J WJ CAROLYN JOHNSON BILL JOHNSON 134 G. Another street, some more houses that were hit. And there was a bunch of debris left from the storm. 155 Dear Parents and Students, Due to the tornado and mix-up in the mail, we are sorry to say that we do not have mug shots of the students in grades 6th through 8th. In order to try and make up for this, we have tried to take group pictures of the different grades. We are not for sure if we took pictures of all the students. If we didn’t we are very sorry. We hope that next year certain circumstances will not interfere with the receiving and printing of the pictures in the annual. Again, we are very sorry. With its high wind it destroyed buildings, unroofed houses, uprooted trees, and left many, many people shaken by its great force and quickness. But buildings can be rebuilt, houses can be re-roofed, but we ask you, How can you replant a huge oak tree that has been standing for ages? 164 Another house is half destroyed.
