However, few people are as lucky as we Central Texans are because we have every phase of Texas rolled into one. The Central Texas area has much to offer in the way of ideal places to have fun. In the '65 BULLDOG, we have tried to picture some of the outstanding places for you who enjoy them most. Our beautiful city of Burnet, the center of the Highland Lakes, is growing, prospering and developing new indus- tries. The Highland Lakes include Lake Buchanan, formed by the largest multiple-arch dam in the world; Lake Inks, home of the scenic 1300 acre Inks Lake State Park; Lake Granite Shoals, a beautiful constant level lake with clear blue water; Lake Marble Falls, formed by the picturesque Max Starke Dam; Lake Travis, longest of the Highland Lakes; and Lake Austin, near the Capital City. To the Highland Lakes of Central Texas, we the 1965 BULLDOG Staff dedicate with honor the ’65 BULLDOG. Sharon Knies Editor LAKE TRAVIS 2 One of the most impressive highlights of the year was the acquirement of new uniforms for the band. 3 HIGHLIGHTS NEW AND IMPROVED EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM The new Elementary Building houses three new classrooms, new offices, kitchen, and combination lunchroom, gym, and Auditorium. Some was official, some incidental--but all of it interesting. AS THE MOTORCADE CAME UP CONGRESS AVE. PRESIDENT JOHNSON SPOTTED THE BUR- NET BAND DRAWN UP IN SMART FORMATION IN FRONT OF THE PARAMOUNT THEATRE PLAYING HAIL THE CHIEF , HE STOPPED THE MOTORCADE, CLIMBED FROM HIS LIMOUSINE AND SHOOK HANDS WITH MOST MEMBERS OF THE BAND. NOT EVEN THE BEATLES COULD HAVE GIVEN ME SUCH A THRILL, ONE GIRL WAS HEARD TO EXCLAIM! Uniformed and plain clothes guards, aided by barricades, held the tightly massed crowd back from the streets at the Capital building--with only a few impor- tant people allowed to wander in the area. Maybe the Burnet delegation arrived a few minutes late because from the area of the many parked buses came a large number of placard bearing persons proclaim- ing Burnet's support. Held high above the heads of the jammed public, the LBJ signs gained more attention from the Johnson sup- porters surrounding the dignitary’s platform than any other group. And why not? There were more of them--and they wound up practi- cally at the White House presses' elbows. Not even an All-Ameri- can fullback could have broken through that crowd, but the Burnet delegation did. --reprinted from the Austin-American Robert Bardovsky proudly displays his calf.
