ADMINISTRATION Page - 11 Classe. CLASSES Page - 17 PERSONALITIES Page - 37 ORGANIZATIONS Page - 51 2 Table of Contents The school year of 1963-64 has been like many others, one of transition for everyone at BHS. Freshmen have made adjustments to accommodate high school requirements of scholarship and school life. Sophomores have begun to assume the leadership qualities that will prevail in the future. Juniors have been appointed or elected to many positions and given many honors. And seniors have fulfilled their responsi- bilities and now look forward to vocations or higher education. Yet, in these terms, this year was not really so different from any other, but to every individual the past year has been the author of innumerable experiences to be recalled whenever par- ticipants gather. It has been the goal of the BULLDOG staff to record this year accurately and meaningfully. The worth of this yearbook might better be judged in the future rather than in the present; its ability to bring back worthwhile memories can only be tested in the future. Of course, this book could not have been completed without the help of many people. The staff would like to take this opportunity to thank the individuals who have helped to make this book possible. To Chester Kincheloeand Bob Bray, we owe our special thanks for many pictures taken of the school's activities. To our school photographer, G. F. Kilman of Fred- ericksburg, we say thank you for your enduring patience. To Mr. Akridge, the faculty, and students, we thank you for your contri- butions, your help, your cooperation and the words of encour- agement. KENNEDY May 22, 1917 - November 22, 1963 American Heritage Promotes Democracy The words of Lincoln, Jefferson, Patrick Henry, Franklin D. Roosevelt ring across our land and echo through the valleys. These leaders plus thousands of men in battle gave us our heritage to reflect on. Theirs was the drive of free men establishing liberty for mankind. The Liberty Bell shall forever herald the truth to the world--we are the land of the free. Such is our heritage--to live as free men in this great land of ours, free to follow the doc- trines of our hearts in upholding our constitution. The legacy of these men carried with it a vast responsibility. Based on our doctrine, based on the freedom and cherished liberty of'men, we the youth of Burnet High School accept the challenge of our forefathers and will forever endeavor to continually promote democracy. Ours shall be a constant quest for truth for as Henri Amiel stated, “Truth is the secret of eloquence and of virtue, the basis of moral authority; it is the highest summit of art and life. Democracy When we select those most favored by us, we turn again to our heritage. Our founders saw to it that each man had the privilege of a free vote. Those se- lected to represent us are chosen by the majority of the vote from the entire student body. Our ances- - . •- - , • • r , • ■ . ' s ■ Homecoming activities included the traditional bonfire, court-house pep-rally, and the presentation of the beautiful Homecoming Queen nominees and their escorts. Lynn Wells was selected as Queen, and LaTrelle Sprott was crowned football sweetheart. Band sweetheart, Sue Burton, was also presented. Is Illustrated in tors gave us the privilege of selecting whomever we wish for whatever office - be it Cheerleader, class favorite or Homecoming Queen. Through the Demo- cratic elective process, we are able to select those worthy of recognition. Representing the four BHS classes are these favorites, queens, and sweethearts. Shown are LaTrelle Sprott, Sue Burton, Sandy Galceran, Jo Ann McKenzie, Sharon Strahan, Kaye Lavender, Kakie Lucksinger, Sharon Goble, Judy Jones, and Joye Bibles. B.H.S. Highlights In Sportsmanship Our heritage injects in us the idea of the fairminded. Based on our rights as individuals, we feel-impelled to acknowledge and honor the rights of others. The first ten statements of our constitution instill in us the desire to be fairminded and to respect as well as be respected by other individuals. On the playing field, in the classroom, in all walks of life, the idea of respect and sportsmanship is constantly prac- ticed. Pictured are BHS's pretty cheerleaders, Jo Ann, LaTrelle, Karen, and Kakie. Acting as Co-Captains, Hap and Dudley meet the Hillbillies's leaders before the Fredericksburg game at Burnet. Shaking hands showing good sportsmanship are Burnet Supt. J. L. Akridge and San Saba Supt. J. C. Petty. Each man supported the opposite team in '62. Beautiful girls and their handsome escorts represent themselves, their school and their country. None can travel unattended. We are told by our basic heritage that alliance and assistance are needed for success. Therefore, the fine organizations which support our school are endeavoring to aid us in broadening our dimensions. With the idea of better schools in mind, the organizations are promoting ambitious projects. The P. -T. A. and C.O.B. S. are two such organizations striving to retain high stand- ards of learning in our schools. The P. -T. A. set ambitious goals for the 1963-64 school year and adopted a theme of Boost the Burnet Schools. The P. -T.A. staged the school's Halloween Carnival and mailed a monthly newsletter to all parents and teachers. In Promoting School Activities P. -T.A. It is to these and other leaders that we turn for guidance in activities and in government as well as in everyday life. In Leadership and Scholarship Our great country finds its foundations in man’s ability to think and reason. Our peace is maintained through man's ability to negotiate. We choose to recognize those who utilize their best talents and guide us academically and scholastically. Through strong, intelligent leadership will we be better able to promote democracy now as well as in our adult life to come. In recognizing these outstanding students, we are recog- nizing our leaders of tomorrow. Pictured above are the Student Council members who have guided the school's govern- ment. Sharon Strahan speaks in appreciation of the cooperation and help given her and the annual staff. Below are the students who attained the highest averages for the first semester in the various subjects offered at BHS. Dedication BURNET BOARD OF EDUCATION: Dr. John Sandner, Conley Wofford, Ramsey Clinton, Supt. J. L. Akridge, Norman Wright, Donald Shelburn, Jesse Rhoden, Sylvester Reed. Our school board is made up of dedicated citizens, who spend many hours setting the policy of our school system. At the meetings each month, the members consider many matters important to the effi- cient operation of the school system. They have approved many courses which add depth to our curricu- lum and have directed the beginning of the building program. We wish to express our deepest appreciation for all these countless hours of work and guidance, and for the unselfish devotion you have given throughout the years. Upon you has fallen the responsibility of governing the Burnet School System, of recognizing needs and making decisions that keep the schools in competition with the best. Because of all these contributions, to you, the BOARD OF EDUCATION, we dedicate the 1964 BULLDOG. Ranny had been very active in the Bulldog Booster Club, and had gone on all the out-of-town trips. His cute smile, good nature, and friendly words are indeed missed at Burnet High School. During the year most students were busy working on homework, but the Bulldog staffers were per- forming a variety of assignments - scheduling, taking and selecting pictures, planning layouts, writing copy, and selling ads and subscriptions. Much planning went into each section and of course, deadlines made the task exciting and exacting. Besides the usual misspelled names, lost negatives, and missing pictures, the 1964 Bulldog had many other firsts to be remembered - special end-sheets, color pages, and the biggest annual ever. The staff worked hours and hours to give BHS a book of memories - re- corded, created, and cherished. EDITOR -----------------------Sharon Strahan ASST. ED.---------------------David Samford BUS.
