(dfendentien BUTCH BRANSFORD, Secretary; Don Burton; William Schroeder, preparing to fire the cannon after a T.D. The Vaqueros made a new addition to the traditions of Burnet High School this year-- a cannon patterned after Texas University's Old Smokey. The cannon fires two blank ten-gauge shotgun shells. Many Bulldog fans around Burnet donated the money to have the cannon made. The P. T. A., Post Office employees, and the high school stu- dents were the heaviest contributors. The boys did a faithful job of standing by to shoot the cannon after each score made by the football team. Mr. Temple, who con- ceived the idea, spent a summer of foot- work and searching to find the antiquated parts so that the cannon would be ready for the first T. D. of the season. Facing experienced teams, the Bulldogs could boast of only two seniors. However, strong determination and zealous spirit compensated for the advantages of other teams. This strong desire to win, coupled with hard work, was directly re- sponsible for winning Central Texas Team-of-the-Week after victory over traditional foe, Llano. Men credited with molding the spirit of the boys were Central Texas Coach-of-the-Week, Vandeventer, and Coach Newby. Football season opened spectacularly with rival, Del Valle. The past two seasons Burnet defeated the Cardinals who were out for revenge. Scoring first Del Valle appeared to be on the road to victory. The Bulldogs came roaring back and led 12-6 before Del Valle scored with seventeen seconds left - ending the game in a breath-taking tie. Hillbillies encounter hard yardage. ROBERT NICHOLSON Tackle DAVID PETRICK End SENSATIONAL - THE BURNET LLANO CONTEST! A terrific defense and potent offense spelled the doom ctf the Yellow jackets. On the flying feet of Jesse Perkins, Dud- ley Kinsey, and Tim Guthrie the Bulldogs ran their bread- and-butter plays to perfection leading to a 27-0 victory. This outstanding achievement was sweet revenge after the beating from Llano last season. In a thrill-packed game the Bulldogs hung on for life and perserved a 13-6 win. The first half ended with the Green and White taking a 7-6 lead. Early in the fourth quarter the Bulldogs scored again to lead by seven points. Copperas Cove, however, wasn't to be put down so easily and were on the Burnet twenty-five yard line before a last chance pass failed. JAMES LEWIS End yV'ever-Say-Die bulldogs JAMES PRICE Guard In their second district game the Bulldogs weren't able to break the jinx the Eagles held over them at their own home field and lost 13-7. Two miraculous catches by end, Larry Gentry, set up Burnet’s only touchdown. Though lacking an offensive punch, the Bulldogs had a 7-6 lead before the Eagles scored in the last four minutes to secure a victory. Neither hail, nor sleet, nor snow, nor rain could keep a loyal fan from the Burnet-Marble Falls game. The Bulldogs took the lead at half time 12-8 and it appeared they might defeat county-district rival. Marble Falls. The Mustangs scored in the fourth quarter, however, to take the lead 16-12. A never - say-dle determination was shown by the Bulldogs as they nearly scored before time ran out on them. Burnet finished the football season against highly- regarded Mason who had already secured the district championship. Going into the game, the Bulldogs were a three touchdown underdog. The first half ended with both teams on an even 8-8 basis. A freak pass catch deflected off the hands of two Burnet defenders decided the game in favor of the Punchers as they went on to win 14-8. FIRST ROW; Richards, Verlander, Richardson, WilUams, Hyman, Guthrie, Jones, Pressler, Stuart, Thompson. The Burnet Bullpups developed quickly this year under new coach, Kenneth Teltow. The team played outstandingly all year, owning a 6-2 season record, and eventually winning the Dis- trict Championship. Beginning with an important 20-0 victory over Goldthwaite the team progressed steadily throughout the season. A last-second touchdown spelled the defeat of Copperas Cove for their second district win. The Bullpups con- tinued their winning ways as their third district victory, an 18-0 win, was charged to Mason. Finishing the season against always-dangerous Marble Falls, the Bullpups fought courageously and fully deserved a 20-12 win. The Burnet Bulldogs look forward with eagerness to the ar- rival of these boys in high school. Defensive Line Up Burnet-M. F.
