Yarborough's Variety Store TOWER LODGE KIRK'S GROCERY Western Auto Associated Store MEMORIAL As 1952 is Burnet County's 100th birthday, we have dedicated this annual to it. It is believed that Coronado was the first white man to set foot in our county, but the first authentic history we have is that in 1848 Captain Henry E. Mc- Culloch was sent to protect the struggling settlers from the Indians. He was sta- tioned three miles from where our town now stands. Burnet was called Hamilton until February 5, 1852, when Burnet County was created and named after David G. Burnet. Whether to locate our county seat at Hamilton (Burnet) or at Oat Meal Creek was the issue of our first election. This bitter contest ended with election of the following officers: Judge—John Scott; Clerk—A. G. Horne; Treasurer—Sam E. Holland; Assessor-Collector—William D. Reed; District Clerk and Justice of the Peace—George Joy; Sheriff—J. C. Bradley; and Commissioners John Jennings and William T. Chesser. Sam Holland, Burnet's first permanent settler, also entered into the first marriage and was the father of the first white child born in the county. Although many of the earlier pioneers brought slaves with them, there is no trace of any slave outbreaks. There was considerable Indian fighting in the county. The last Indian fight took place on Morgan Creek in 1873. Logan Vandeveer, our first postmaster, and Taylor built our first substantial building (the old Masonic building). Boland and McKee opened the first store. In the late '50s, orchards, rail-fences, longhorn cattle, and a few churches and schools were beginning to be a common sight. The most notable enterprises of the '50s and '60s were the buildings of gins and mills—parts of which still stand. The first school in Burnet was taught in a little one-room log cabin by W. H. Dixon, an Oxford graduate. Peter Kerr left to the public schools, along with other lands, the grounds where the high schools now stand. County court was held under some post oak trees in the courtyard after the old courthouse burned in the early '70s. The replacement building is pictured in this book just before the Senior Class pictures. Since the county was first organized, forty-six post offices have been established in it. Many lasted only a few years. The last one established, and one of the eight now serving the county, is the Lake Victor post office. The largest cedar trees in the state are located in the Burnet area. There are many minerals present in our soil. Around ten tons of high grade graphite are ex- tracted daily from our graphite mine. Our first railroad was built in 1882 to carry the rock in the Capitol from Granite Mountain to Austin. The big power and reservoir dams of the Lower Colorado River Authority serve all Central Texas and spot our county with lakes. Resort facilities have developed tremendously in the period from 1940 to 1952. Pictures of some of the business places now serving the Burnet community are shown in the preceding pages of this section of THE FOOTPRINTS. •This report is based largely on articles in the BURNET BULLETIN written by Mrs. Clane Gibbs. Some of the facts mentioned in the last paragraph are from a report for history class made by Frank Hines.
