B.GWddc Center WD SIIM Supplement to A Burnet County BoHetm, Augtu 16, I9 9 Long Awaited Burnet County History To Be Published This Fall A two-volume ’Burnet County History ', a pioneer look at this picturesque highland lake hill country of central Texas, will be published this fall and winter by the Burnet County Historical Com- mission. Authored by Darrell Debo, member of an early day pioneer fami- ly, the History is the culmination of some ten years of research and editing by the author and a host of Burnet County people headed by members of the Burnet County Historical Commission The final stages of the book are being prepared by the Publisher, Eakin Publications, one of Texas' most prolific “Tcxana” publishers who moved into a new office and plant on Highway 281 in Burnet last November Working with the publisher is a book committee of the Commis- sion made up of the author; Mrs. Bill Bryson, chairman of the Com- mission; and Mrs. Willie Price, vice-chairman, as well as head librarian at the Herman Brown Free Library’ The writing of the History was underwritten by the Burnet Coun- ty Commissioners Court which holds the copyright for the book and will receive royalty payments. The Historical Commission will receive 50 sets of the History' from the Publisher. The first volume of the Burnet County History will trace the colorful pioneer history of the county from early settlement in the 1840s through organization of the county in 1852, only lb years after the battle of San Jacinto and a brief seven years after statehood The twenty chapters and a modern-day epilogue covers a wide spectrum of county history from early exploration and settlement through its more than a century and a quarter of existence Schools and churches, organizations and institutions are chronicled j well ■ farming and ranching, industry’, communities and towns The final chapter is an epilogue concerning the receni growth and progress of the counry from its rural background into its present scenario as a resort and retirement area and its fledgling commercial and industrial growth. Historically, a vital portion of the book is the eight parts of the appendix including the entire I860 and 1870 county census lists, county marriages, veteran rosters, county and state officials and rosters of Frontier Guards. The book will have footnotes and a name and place index, an im- ponam addition for genealogists and historical researchers The second of the two-volume set, scheduled for publication in December or early January , will have histories of some 341 pioneer Burnet County families, most of which have been submitted by family members, In both volumes will be included more than 400 historic photographs gathered from private and public collections over the county. The two volumes will contain more than 600 pages and will be published in a 9 by 12 inch book, bound in doth with gold stamped cover and spine and handsome dust jackets. The Burnet County Historical Commission expressed its apprccia tion to the people of the county “for all of the help, cooperation and encouragement received over the years “ Publication of the county history is only one of the many projects of the Commission, one of the most active county commissions in the state. The Commission has also been instrumental in the erecting of some 36 state historical markers over the county and in preserving and restoring historic buildings and sites, such as the stone and log buildings at the site of old Fort Croghan. The O. O. Cor- ker saloon mentioned in the report was located at the corner of Main and Jackson Streets at the site where the old Burnet Bulletin office was located, and where the Burnet Citizen was formerly housed. Other buildings named in the account as be- ing destroyed were situated west of the saloon on Jackson Street while othcre were located south of the saloon and fronting on Main Street between the saloon and the M. G Schnabel proper- ty “For many years Burnet ha been remarkably free from disastrous Fires, but we have now one to record in which thousands of dollars worth of r operty went up in smoke and almost nothing remains of seven business houses and their contents but a smoldering mass of ruins. “The fires started between and 2 o'clock Thursday morning and when first seen was in the rear of O. O. Corker's saloon. “Our people seemed wrapped in slumber and although pistols were fired and the church bells pealed forth their notes of warning the Fiery monster had made good headway before our citizens gathered to intercept us progress. Before almost anything could be done the flames had reached out and taken hold of the old Hunter stain and H, C. Whitney's drug store. Moving south almost at the same time the fire had soon within its grasp everything from Whitney's corner to and in- cluding (unreadable) story building known as the Meat Market. “When it became evident that an attempt to save the buildings with the means at hand was useless the attention of the crowd was called to the rescue of property and the necessi- ty for action to prevent a further spread of the fire. “The crowd although sadly lacking in concert of action and For effective means, worked with a will that was truly commendable. Schnabel's fence was torn down, hydrants were brought into play, ladders, buckets and wet blankets were used effectively and after a tough fight the fire was con- fined within the bounds above mentioned. “The property destroyed with its ownership and estimated value and insurance is as follows: H. C Whitney, drug store, value, $3,000, drugs $4,500, loss about $6,000, insurance $3,600. “Mrs, Mart Haynic. CowBoy Depot, etc.; $1,000. in- surance $500. “H.). Thomas, saddlery etc.. $1,500, insurance $1,000. “O O. Corker, liquors and saloon fixtures, $1,250, no insurance. “Drs. Culbertson and Brownlee, book, office Fixtures, etc,, $400, no insurance. Leon and H Blum of Galveston, Corker saloon building. Hunter stand and adjoining building on the west, value about $2,000 “R. A Piper, who had a feed store in house west of Hunter stand, lost about 200 bales of hay and some other stuff, value not to us known. “Rube Boyce with his family occupied the Hunter building. His saved nearly all and his loss is small “Frank Thomas Meat Market house, value about $600, no insurance. “Some property was rescued from the burning buildings, we give ownership and estimated value as follows: H. C. Whitney, show cases and drugs. $1,000; H. J, Thomas, saddlery, $600, Drs. Culbertson and Brownlee, about half they had. “Bowdoin saved all of his stuff. “The total value of the property destroyed including the seven buildings will run up to nearly $12,000. “ Marble Falls Academy Dormitory Built about 1890 as college then became Academy.
