ON r Birth Don’t Tread on We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident: That All Men Are Created Equal. Merlin 1976 B. T. H. S. Burlington, N.J. That They Are Endowed 2 3 Liberty, 6 And The Pursuit 8 Of Happiness 9 THE FIRST 200 YEARS A knowledge of American history is an invitation to experience the ac- complishment, drama, tragedy and hope of an infant nation struggling to grow up. Sturdy, determined pioneers hacked away at the edges of a raw continent and, with blunders and achievements alike, modeled a country with a spirited nature and a united commitment to individual liberty for every one of its citizens. Americans, great and not so great, have given us a heritage to carry on and improve upon. Farmers and soldiers, industri- alists and merchants, dreamers and leaders, are all there in two centuries of progress. But the maturing isn't finished. You'll find the boundaries of growth as endless today as when our forefathers first envisioned them. You can seek out your own destiny with the wisdom and judgement which comes with re-creation of the past. Your knowledge, dreams and industry will carry on through many more centuries of living history. THE SPIRIT OF A NATION “I was born American; I live an American; I shall die an American.'” daniel webster “Don’t give up the ship ”capt. jameslawrence So you are the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war. LINCOLN to Harriet Beecher Stowe. Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, ... emma lazarus 'The people are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty. thomasjefferson “A truly American sentiment recognises the dignity of labor and the fact that honor lies in honest toil.” grover Cleveland Be sure you are right, then go ahead . david crockett A knowledge of the past prepares us for the crisis of the present and the challenge of the future.” johnf. Kennedy “ ... That this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom.” Lincoln Historic continuity with the past is not a duty; it is only a necessity. justice oliver wendell holmes America is a tune. Sam is a very outgoing person. His personality has won him many friends. He has always been a cheer- ful and warm individual, giving of himself to others. No favor asked of Sam is ever turned down. His respect and consideration for others has manifested itself in this book’s being dedicated to him. Sam has always pursued the high- est ideals — academically and social- ly. He has constantly worked to bet- ter himself in his studies, on the field, and in his relationships with others. Perhaps the attribute of perser- verence best sums up the way we feel about Sam. Where many people would have given up under similar unfortunate circumstances, Sam has literally defied medicine and has made a miraculous comeback on his way to what we all hope is a complete recovery. He has perservered in spite of the pain, the set backs, and the tedious hours of exercise. And he has done it without a complaint. He is truly someone to emulate. It is with our prayers for your complete recov- ery, our respect for you as classmate and sportsman, and our love for you as a friend that we. The Graduating Class of 1976, do sincerely dedicate this yearbook to you, Sam Murphy. Play it again, Sam! Senior Advisors The Class of ’76 began its last year in B.T.H.S. appropriately. Our Bicentennial Homecoming Float, “The Spirit of ‘76”, won. Following Homecoming was a successful candy sale to help alleviate the cost of our Senior trip. On February 11 th we set off on our long awaited journey to Tamiment Ski Lodge in the Poconos. After waiting all through high school for this excursion, two days just did not seem like much time at all. However, the one event we have all been anticipating is yet to come ... GRADU- ATION! Singing, acting, striving to accomplish her goals, and achieving, she was a beautiful, strong person with qualities we all wish we could possess. Although the tragedy of her death on October 31, 1975 left us without a dear friend, warm and fond memories will keep her with us always. 76 77 FACULTY Board Of Education (LEFT TO RIGHT, STANDING) Mr. Hublcr, Mr. Jungblut. Since your freshman year, the class’ activities have been conducted with an enthusiasm in keeping with the Spirit of ’76. After 0-23 and 0-20, the Fals still retained their determination. This quality paid off as they won their next four games. The Fals then played Burlington City on Home- coming Day. This was an exciting game, but the Fals suffered a painful defeat by a score of 14-13. The “Mayor’s Cup” was then awarded to the victors after the contest. During these games many seniors, juniors and sophomores were ac- knowledged for outstanding perfor- mances. Although many inexperi- enced sophomores started in key po- sitions for the Falcons, they learned quickly and played admirably. Senior linebacker Dan Raftery was chosen for the second team de- fense on the County All-Star Squad. Clarence Morris, a junior back, was named to the second team offense. Bob Grippe, Gerald Kee, Gary Keys and Bryan Warrick received Honor- able Mention. In addition to the County All-Star Squad, the Times also selected a Freedom Division All-Star Football Team. Dan Raftery made first team defense in this poll. Joining him were senior defensive lineman Gary Keys, junior end Gerald Kee, and senior defensive back Glenn Collins who made second team defense. Cliff Clement, sophomore end, was named to the second team offense. Alan Cognigni, Joe Gaynor, Bob Grippe, Clarence Morris, Jody Pancoski, Pat Roche and Bryan Warrick received Honorable Mention. Although the squad had a 4-5 sea- son, they persisted to the very end of each contest showing a great desire to play. This alone made this season worthwhile. FIRST ROW: A. Dial. S. Bozarth. J. Leroy. Varsity Hockey Has Questionable Season What about this game of hockey? Why do we do it? What good is it? Does it teach us anything? Determination, for instance? How to struggle? How to get something the hard way? Strength or patience or accuracy or quickness or tolerance? Or how long we can run before the blisters on our feet scream for someone else to play? And maybe — just maybe — there is time for one more goal. Does it teach us that if we run hard for the ball but miss, our teammate will be right behind us? That no matter what the outcome, there will be another game? Another chance to try harder? Another chance to win? Docs it teach us anything? Like how to rely on ourselves?? They had a bit of trouble with a win loss record of 0-14-1. Earlier this season, Mr. Craft commented, “This year’s Soccer Team was among the most spirited, hard- working, never-say-die teams ever fielded at this school!” He also said that maybe he should have post- poned his withdrawel from Soccer a year or two after seeing the quality of the up-coming boys. “However, 1 made my decision last August before any win loss ideas had jelled, and plan to stick by it. Senior Dennis Wade became stronger as the season progressed and ended up as the number two runner on the team. Dennis highlighted his season by finishing ninth in the South Jersey championship. Ken Marzinsky, the third senior on the squad, had a strong first half of the season but failed to keep up the pace in the end. Rounding out the team were Mike McCarthy, Ed Sampson, and Steve Popp. Mike and Ed improved tremen- dously during the season and will be the backbone of the 1976 squad. 112 (TOP ROW, T. Marmion. S. Palmyra or Holy Cross was picked to take the crown but the race was ended when B.T.H.S. beat Holy Cross in the last game of the season. This year’s team did not produce one specific super player, but in- stead used all the men to play the game and come up with a winning season. Gene Darling was selcted to the all-county team. Freedom Division team, is a candidate for all South- Jersey Group I team, and was the team’s leading scorer. Gerald Kee showed improvement, being this his first year of organized basketball. Bryan McGair, a tremendous shooter and a good defense player, received Honorable Mention all Burlington County. Varsity finished out their season with a 8-12 record, and the J. V. girls closed the sea- son with a record of 12-7. This was the first year that the Township girls went to the state tournament. Coach Ingemi said, “We’ll be young, but we can do it.” Last years team was also quite a success.
