BTHS Presents The ‘68 Merlin Co-editors in chief Lynn Heisler David Hope Advisors Miss Beverly Gongloff Mr. Joseph Holden This was the year of . . . Anticipation “ Men spend their lives in anticipation, in determining to be vastly happy at some period or other, when they have time. But the present time has one advantage over every other; it is our own.” Everyday, we anticipate new discoveries in class and through ourselves; and of course, we an- ticipate the end of a school day. Expecta- tion for the near future mounts as June approaches, and the senior stampede on the guidance office begins. Much happens that we do not foresee, but that is the beauty of anticipation, the unanticipated. . . . Excitement “A life without excitement is no life at all. It is most obvious at highly competitive athletic events. But it is often easily sensed in classrooms when snow begins to fall or right before the holidays. This then becomes an inte- gral part of school life. Quite often, however, we forget that living in itself is so exciting. Even so, we find that excitement draws the line between mere existence and living. 4 . . Aetion “All life is ebb and flow.” The cultiva- tion of a highly competitive spirit along with good sportsmanship is the goal of athletics at B.T.H.S. The abili- ty to think logically and clearly in the midst of action is a goal towards which every participant must strive. A com- plete student must develop coordina- tion and some physical skills. Those who excel bring much honor to them- selves and to their school. Yet those who are consistently third or fourth, or who make the“second string,” bring as much honor upon themselves as do those who are first. Persistence, endurance, and desire are as valuable in the second man as in the first. Action is not only found in sports, but all around us. It takes only an alert mind to find it. 6 7 . . . Learning Learning is like rowing upstream; not to advance is to drop back. Learning is the business in which ourstudents areen- gaged. Learning facts and learning ideas are both important. Facts are stored for later use, ideas for later learning. One cannot exist without the other. Learning frequently involves listening to things we don’t like to hear or sometimes to those things with which we agree. Learning is a personal experience as we learn about our limitations, our capabilities and our thoughts. Whatever else it may be, learn- ing is for each of us unique. . . . Enjoyment “Never put off till tomorrow what can be enjoyed today.’’ Everyday we see B.T.H.S. students enjoying school life. Such moments can include: the opportun- ity to enjoy the company of the opposite sex — eating with friends at lunch — a chance to laugh and enjoy class, and the feeling of accomplishment in one’s aca- demic work — These are but a few mo- ments of enjoyment which can be cap- tured in the course of a school day. 10 . . . Discovery We shall not cease from exploring ...” Curiosity and an inherent desire to know the How” and ” Why are the traits which the educational system must seek to develop in each student. No longer are mere facts sufficient. Here at B.T. H.S., perhaps because of a forward-looking administration and an excellent teaching staff, the classes are geared to individual discovery rather than to textbook learning of principles. Each morning, one can find the office buzzing with the sound of teach- ers discovering what their mailbox con- tains. As students pass from class to class, they find that their exploration of ideas and skills prepare them for a particular vocation or profession. As we can see, dis- covery is not limited to the sciences, but rather, is a constant process of exploring our environment, our society, and our- selves. 12 14 . . . Dedication Mrs. Leah M. Katz, through her years of associa- tion with the class of 1968, has proven her dedica- tion to her profession and to her students. We have long known Mrs. Katz, and have come to appreci- ate her thoughtful concern and her help. Mrs. Katz has served the school and has served us, the stu- dents of Burlington Township, in several ways. As advisor to the language club, Mrs. Katz has helped to nurture in each one of us an appreciation of our cultural heritage, and an understanding of cultures foreign to our own. Mrs. Katz's deeply personal philosophy is tempered by a dry brand of humor all her own. Perhaps her most noticeable characteris- tic is an inherent desire to have order. As class ad- visor, she has shared her philosophy and her hu- mor. She has helped us to mature to the point where we are able to take our places as intelligent, concerned members of our society. Manifested in her dress, her manner, and her thought, it is this that clearly sets her apart. Consequently, the 1968 Merlin Staff, along with the Class of 1968, with deepest gratitude and sincere respect, dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Leah M. Katz, who in memory, will remain ever with us. IS % Foreword earl and late more than seven hundred endless!) busy Falcons gather in clusters and crowds. . . join in routine daily affairs of classes and elubs. . . check the latest reports of projects and parties, of plans and paraphernalia . . . share work and play. joy and tears, victory and defeat. .. all of these moments have combined to form this year of anticipation, excitement, action, learning, enjoyment, discovery, and dedication. Despite being plagued by injuries, the Falcons pulled through with many satisfying victories over their strong opponents. Quarterbacks Rick Babula and Roger Williams not only led our team to victo- ry, but also led the Delaware Valley League in pass completion percentages. With a strong defense and a powerful offense, the Falcons were not to be denied their second place finish in the D.V.L. Indi- vidually, two senior members of the team were recognized by numerous groups for their achieve- ments. Bryan Freeman was named to the Newark News Group I All State Team and to the Courier Post Group I South Jersey Second Team. Jeff Cow- in received an abundance of awards, the most noteworthy being his nomination to the UPI All Group I State Team. 94 JV Goes Undefeated JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL SCORES BTIIS OTHERS 6 Pemberton 0 FRESHMAN FOOTBALL SCORES 13 Palmyra 7 25 Florence 7 BTIIS OTHERS 19 Allentown 7 0 Riverside 7 7 Bordentown 6 33 Bordentown 7 12 Riverside 6 0 Pemberton 28 26 N. We supply many of the chemicals which make them beautiful and serviceable. Chemicals we make are used in almost every step of textile processing from the time raw fiber is received at the mill until it rolls out the other end as a finished fabric ready for the cutter. And we have now become a fiber producer. Our Ayrlyn nylon, which is used for hosiery and dress fabrics, is produced at Scranton, Pennsylvania and Fayetteville, N.C. Textile chemicals represent only a few of the 2,500 different Rohm and Haas products. If you think you would like to work for a growing dynamic exciting company, we hope you will consider us when your education is completed. But more and more often you’ll be needing the services and help a bank can provide. Then you’ll be happy to remember that there’s one bank around here that welcomes young people like you —and goes very far out of its way to help. In your career—in the financial needs of setting up a family—in financing further education, etc., etc., etc., etc., etc. Burlington Bank t 39?
