FREDERIC , P. WIEDERSUM ASSOCI ARCHITECTS - E N CINE BAS - In the Beginning . . . I Burlington Township High School proudly presents its first edition of the MERLIN Vol. I published by The 1965 Yearbook Staff Preface In the beginning—a wall of leaves and branches bounced with the hot wind. Like a rippling sheet, the mass of brown vegetation yielded and shook gently. Oppressive heat and humidity filled the breezy ;ur, and trees and bushes leaned nearer to the earth. Behind this heaped foliage was a yellowed meadow, furrowed by a dwindling stream. High above this panorama, in the moist, glaring greyness of the sky, floated a minute point of life. Round and round it swept, indifferent, remote. The eye was sharp and clear and watchful but never interested. Its bony, broad wings seemed paralyzed as it glided noiselessly above the arid ground and majestic trees. The bird’s power was evident as its wings swept and its fantail soared. Now—in the shadowed greenery of the diminished woods stands Burlington Township High. Surrounded by playing fields marked for the action of future successful campaigns, this school gives life to the landscape. Spurred by the clanging bells, the students alight from the yellow buses. They race with sure-footed steps, not slowed by weighty books, toward future responsibility. Yet the verdant trees still shake and yield to the warm breeze; and the watchful bird, its head flat and its beak curved, continues its effortless flight. No more an indifferent point in the bright light, but now an animation of strong purpose, the Merlin symbolizes the proud hopes, aspirations and promise of those below. mjc 4 Table of Contents Dedication Administration Faculty Classes Activities Sports Sponsors Dedication DEDICATION Each year a class has the privilege of dedicating its Yearbook to someone who has helped and inspired it. It is customary to select a person who has guided the class with his understanding of student problems, likes and dislikes, and attitudes. We are fortunate this year to have a man in our high school who has guided many of us through our elementary school years. Now he is once again guiding us as our princi- pal. Therefore, it is with pride, pleasure, and a sincere thank you” that we, the students of BTHS, dedicate this, our first edition of the Merlin”, to you, Mr. Thomas E. Harrington. 7 A School Aborning: Here is the architectural plan of BTHS and surrounding grounds. The Falcon's Roost shown in its new location. An aerial view of the steel skeleton of BTHS ntto From Girders to Roost . . . Before deciding on the present site, the Board of Education looked at about ten other sites. November 27, 1961—The Commission asked permission to start plans for the Township High School, but the plans were rejected. January 5, 1962—They resubmitted the request and it was approved. 1954—Burlington Township signed an agreement for an extension to send students to Burlington City Schools. 1959—Burlington City asked the Township students to leave the city schools in 1963 due to overcrowded conditions. The Commission approved the cut-off date for 1964. March 18, 1963—The School Planning Division approved the bids for the high school. April 1963—The construction of B.T.H.S. was started. April 1964—A date was set for the completion of the school. September 1964—B.T.H.S. was completed. PROPOSED JQ: -S D HIGH SCHOOL fcUQLIHGTON TOVNSHlP bUBLlHCTON.
