During the haltftime ceremonies, Diana was crowned Queen ot the 1954 Homecoming by Lucia Anderson, the 1953 queen. Lucia and her escort, lim Scott, led the procession across the football field and preceded the crown bearer, Hildegarcle Gaston. Carolee and Donna were escorted by lim Garnjobst and Terry Duncan. Queen Diana and her escort, Fritz Ober, com- pleted the royal party. This was the first Homecoming to be spon- sored by the Student Council and was con- sidered a success by all. . and the Juniors had a Western Fling Cornstalks, saddles and other western decorations provided a rustic atmos- phere tor the Junior class party which was named the Western Fling. A humorous skit preceded the crown- ing ot King Fred Gale-y and Queen Elizabeth Nelson. Linda Penrose and Anita Rockenbach entertained the group with some currently popular numbers. The rest of the program consisted ot a magic act by Charles Larson and some musical numbers by a boys' quartet consisting oi Carl Lohmann, Steve Schu- neman, Iohn Saathott, and Larry Frueh- ling. Plans tor the party were made and carried out by class officers and com- mittees with the help of the advisers. The Royalty. S. . During the past year, the debate class, under Mr. A. Douglas Mac- Rae, has ranked at least in the upper third in all ot their tournarnents. The A squad, composed of Peggy Brooks, Gary Froid, Ioe Gaston, Don Lindholm, and lunella Thirnrnesch, has been victorious in almost all ot their debates. The B squad, in addition to practicing the tech- niques of debate, has participated in several tourneys and has had a successful season. Miss Grace Sarvis, director of the Burlington elementary school bands, presented a splenf did performance of Haydns Concerto in C Major for Oboew. Last fall, Burlington was host to the annual Area Band Festival. lean Ellerbroek was chosen to reign as queen of the BHS. band. Dur- ing the football season, the marching band frequently entertained 'the crowd, and the pep band played at all pep assemblies and basketball games. Several ensembles were organized to compete in the spring music contests. The group performed at school assemblies and such civic affairs as World Day of Prayer Service, Thanksgiving Day Service, and the Christmas production of the Messiah The choir, as a group, attended the music festival held in Ottumwa. The spring Choral Concert featured religious numbers by the combined chorus classes, short number by small ensembles from the high school and Junior college, and hit numbers from popular rnusical shows by the A Capf pella Choir. Members oi the Finance Commit- tee were in charge of the council funds, and the Honor Point Committee was responsible for carrying out the Honor Point program and planning the banquet. Stonehocker, presided over college assemblies, supervised the Student Council, instructed psy- chology, sociology, and social problems classes, and made work for his very capable secretary, Mrs. George Draxlir- all in a good day's work. On the other hand, Mrs. Draxlir saved Stoney much time by giving curious collegians in- formation about schedules, grade points and all other iddie biddie bits oi college dope. On March 25, the news was released that Burlington College had been accepted into the North Central Asscoz- afion of Colleges and Secondary Schools. Besides adding prestige tc the schools reputation, the accreditation also was a sign that high standards were attained and are being maintained here at B.C.
