Soft, thudding feet are slowly keeping time to the strains of our school song as we march along, together for the last time, on this-our graduation day. lust three years ago, these same feet were timidly entering the corridors of Burlington High School. Our steps became more confident and self-assured after we had elected our first student council representatives, for this gave us a new feeling of belonging at the school. Our junior high days seemed even more distant by the time we had experi- enced our first high school Homecoming. As the weeks and months passed, we became more involved in the regular school activities. There were club initiations, formals and plays in which many of us partici- pated. ln the spring there were concerts and the trip to Dubuque for the annual music festival thrilled many of us. Climaxing our Sophomore year was the Ten Honor Point Banquet. A big event of our Iunior year was our class party, the first one planned by our own class officers. Then came our class play, Peg O' My Heart , well-remembered by all of us. We finished the year with the usual flurry of concerts, lormals, and ban- quets. Our Senior year, marked by such happenings as our class party, the winning of the Little Six Championship in football and our class play, passed all too quickly. One of our classmates 'fdistinguished himself by writing the Words to a school alma mater song, The Ser1ior'banquet and Baccalaureate services highlighted our last week of school. Now, at graduation time, we must assume new burdens and turn our steps from our well worn paths to explore new trails. . THE EDITOR. I We Dedicate Our Book to . Mrs Louise Casper, secretary to Principal Urban I-larken and registrar for the highschool and junior college. Actually, Mrs. Casper's duties are not limited to those uzsually listed. She performs a number of other tasks such as record keeping and tho banking for the entire school. Yet her efforts are seldom publicly acknowledged. In her little spare tirne, Mrs. Casper likes to participate in outdoor activities. Ono of her favorite pastimes is golf. She also enjoys hunting and fishing. We are honored to dedicate our book to you, Mrs. Casper. VIRS. FLORENCE ALLEN I-Iousemother VIILES AMES, B. S., M. A Economics, Business Law, Accounting DAUL BACHER, B, A., M. They have had a brilliant and successful record during their three years, The members of this class have participated and excelled in every major activity of the school-music, athletics, dramatics, debate, declam and journalism. B. H. S. may well be proud of its 1948 Seniors. 4646 me Typical of Miss Howe, class adviser, is her fairness, sympathy and sense of humor. Her able leadership and direction brought the Seniors through their most active year with flying colors. MISS HELEN HOWE Good leadership -l'sense of re- sponsibility - hard-working'' -These Words describe the outstanding job done by the Senior officers this year. They proved themselves worthy of their positions by capably handling the business of their class. First semes- ter officers were Dick, lim W, Peggy and Charlie. Al, lim K., Dona and Babs assumed their duties the second semester. S . Highlights of the Senior year were the class party in the fall, Stairway to the Stars and three-act play, The Seven Sisters , presented in early May. Then in rapid succession came Senior pictures, invitations, Senior banquet, baccalaureate and fin- ally,-graduation! V4 , f . Our Stars . . Louise Clark well deserves to be placed among the Star Seniors. Outstanding in music activities, she plays first stand cello in the orchestra. On the stu- dent council this year, Louise acted as chairman of the assembly committee, and as another Senior hon- or, was elected Dolphin Queen. Throughout her years of BHS she has maintained a high scholastic stand- ard. Scribblers and Y-Teens have kept her busy, and yet, with all these responsibilities, Louise finds time to indulge in tennis or swimming and in playing her large and varied collection of records, Her gay and sweet manner has won her many friends. WAYNE DANIELSON Many honors have come to Barbara McCollom during her high school years. In her Iunior year she 'l d resident was a member of the student counci an p and vice-president of the class. Babs devoted much of her time to music, being first chair violist and a member of the girls' sextet during her second year. As a Senior she was secretary of the student council, class treasurer, associate managing editor of the PSG, and-biggest thrill of all-attendant to the 1948 Home- coming Oueen. Her first taste of dramatics came this May with a part in The Seven Sisters . Babs is truly a Star Senior . LOUISE CLARK Active in declam, dramatics, journalism and mu- sic, Wayne Danielson has no time on his hands . Much of his energy has been put into the field of dra- matics, since he had leads in both Iunior and Senior class plays and in several one-act presentations. Danny also won several top rankings in boys' de- clamation contests. His greatest responsibility was his position as editor-in-chief of the P 6- G and his notable achievement, that of promoting and direct- ing the Etretat, France Relief Drive. He has been con- sistently at the top of the honor roll. Wayne will long be remembered as the author of the words for our Alma Mater song. BARBARA MCCOLLOM ALBERT MORGAN Blond Evangeline Swanson has had a series of fun cmd thrills in BHS. Several honors came her way as a Sophomore which is very unusual. She was chosen to reign as queen over the annual class party and also during that year was a member of the stu- dent council, Vange served as lunior treasurer and secretary for the first and second semesters respec- tively. Undoubtedly her crowning glory came with her selection as the 1948 Homecoming Queen, the dream of every Senior girl. A member of both GAA and Y-Teens, she was always busy. Her personality and cute grin will be remembered by all of us, RICHARD NELSON Albert Morgan's greatest honor came in his Sen- ior year when he was elected class president for the second semester. Sports has been one of Al's main interests in high school. He received several major letters for his work in basketball, football and track during his Iunior and Senior years. Basketball, how- ever, was also an activity for him as a Sophomore. The selection of Al for All-Conference football, first team, gave him recognition for his fine work in that sport, He worked in the cafeteria this year and in- variably greeted all with a friendly smile. His happy- go-lucky nature has made him a favorite, VANGE sWANsoN One of the most active boys in high school has been Richard Nelson. A member of the varsity cle- bate squad, Dick won the degree of distinction giv- en by NFL. As a Sophomore, he was in the boys' quartet. He held several responsible positions dur- ing his second year as president and vice-president of the class and as a member of student council. Again in his Senior year Dick was elected class presi- dent. Having shown talent in dramatics, he has given outstanding performances in all his parts. This last year Dick was on the ad staff of the PGG. His ver- satility has made him one ot the leading Seniors. Always hard at Work the Scribblers sell at the games, making enough money to purchase something which the school needs. Without the valuable assistance ot the Hypatias and the Stagecratt there could never have been so many play productions. The Hypatias also assisted the well-known CDC's in making the Homecoming a most successful one this year. The Sophs have the Alphas and Philos to thank for their grand party, The Shamrock Swing this year. The Trigons were seen ushering at all of the games, plays and con- certs. Certainly the Y-Teen's drive lor lltretat was of a great deal of value, 'V-.title the Hi-Y Community Chest was a complete SUCCESS. We need no explanation ot clubs such as Firesquad, Radio, Projection, Art for we all realize how essential they are to the school. The GAA's were striving the whole year making their club more interesting and en- tertaining to those girls interested in sports. The members of these clubs should cer- tainly be proud ot this year's work! .4 -f3'5 ' 005,600 ' V I H ! :'7?:'. A If ' A - . . . W 13 6 .. in? WV c C, . The Homecoming crowd was thrilled as the Purple and Cwray eleven emerged victorious over the powerful lowa City Little Hawks. Although the title was practically assured by the defeat of the Bulldogs, Burlington clinched the Little Six Championship by defeating Fairfield in the final game of the '47 season. George Taeger was elected by the squad as the most valuable player who received the least publicity and also received the A. B. C. award for outstanding sportsmanship. Quell Under the direction of Maurice Wright, the BHS band displayed excellent talents both as a marching unit and as a concert group. The band could be seen every l riday night going through their variety of stunts and for- forinations between halves at the football games. Their participation in the Homecoming celebration brought much color which otherwise would have been missing. With their snappy marches the band livened up pep assemblies and boosted school spirits at the basketball games. The bandsmen will long remember the journey to the Ottumwa Homecoming and the time they had on the muddy field. Bringing new honors to the band four members were selected for the all-state band. They were Iohn Kent, tuba, Darlyne Adams, Cornet, Vern Trowbridge, bassoon, and Dick Harsch, alto clarinet. At their annual concert the band presented a well-liked program. Soloists were Darlyne Adams with a cornet solo, Carnival of Venice and Iohn Kent with Solo Pomposou, a bass horn solo. These two also survived the district music contest and went on to state competition. The music festival held at Burlington, with Mr. Leonard Smith as guest band conductor, marked the close of an- other successful season for the BHS band. Wx I NIAURICR WRIGHT Director The Eurlington Symphony Orchestra under the baton ot Miss Dorothy Baumle turned out to be another musical success. Eight musicians represented the BHS orchestra in the all-state orchestra, Those included were violins, Bar- bara Holst, Verna Iacobs, Gretchen Schramm and Marlis Murray, viola, Gloria Beardsworth, and cellos, Louise Clark MISS DQRQTHY BAUMLE and Ioan Cook. A select group of players were in the or- Director chestra which accompanied the presentation of the Messiah . With Gretchen Schramm as concert mistress, the orchestra gave a fine performance at their annual concert. Staging a mass ticket-selling campaign, two teams were formed with the losing team treating the winner. Appearing as violin soloist with the orchestra, Miss Dorothy Baumle played the brilliant Lalo concerto, Symphonie Espagnolef Robert Frudeger conducted the orchestra for the solo. Their excellent musicianship can be credited to the hours of careful practice which they spent in preparing their numbers. A part of the orchestra provided the musical background for the Senior Class play. Nancy Neatie and Lewis Sheckler were cast in the lead roles as Mrs Crochet and the Commodore. When a doorstep was lound the Crochets try hard to live-up-to their newly acquired possession. The earthly humor of the Louisiana Caiuns was portrayed with commendable insight. The admirable inter- pretation and the smoothness with which the play was pre- sented can be credited to the skillful direction ot Miss Heta West. The set was particularly well constructed and the sugar cane and Spanish moss from Louisiana added Old South realism. Assisting Miss West were Mariiean Thye as assistant director and Miss Salisbury as technical director. J if EQ? B Yr Seven Sisters Seven Sisters was presented as the Senior Class play by Miss Reta West, dramatic coach. Richard Nelson and Iuanita Van Osdol were as- signed the coveted top roles of Mitzi and Ferenz Horkoy. Both were per- fectly cast in the parts of the mischievous but lovable Mitzi and her hand- some ingenious suitor, The plot of the play is based on the efforts of Mrs. Gyurkovics to find suitable husbands for her tour daughters of mar- riageable age. A young baron, a colonel and a handsome lieutenant are tricked into matrimony through the careful plans of Mitzi and Ferenz. A wager of three kisses to be collected when the three oldest daughters are married off, a case of mistaken identity and an atmosphere of romance and intrigue all add to the fun. Ioan Cook was the assistant director for RICHARD NELSON the production and Miss Salisbury the technical director. t 1 1 pw l' A i Seven Sisters . D. Nelson, B. Mccoiiom, c. McCorkel, A. The Dean When the dean came back from the army they planned to make him dean of all students in the high school and junior college but he soon tangled himself up in IC ac- tivities, he's been there ever since. Occasionally the air turns blue around his office Cso his secretary saysl but every morning finds him back on the job calm as ever. He's getting to be an old timer among Burlington teaching circles. Signing up in 19155, he took on sev- eral commercial courses a n d coached the extemporaneous spea- kers. Really putting himself behind contests he turned out several state champions in typing, sho.thand and speaking. Then came the big blowup and Mr. Stonehocker made a trip up to Camp Dodge to fullfill an appointment made by the local fate sealers. They sent him to air corps OCS frnet his first snag there by wanting to blow his nose during drilll and gave him an intelligence job with a fighter squadron, He spent nearly three years in the Pacific, a few months in Washington with the Department of Labor and then back to Burlington. His job back here had and still has plenty of headaches, The junior college broke all enrollment records, just about tripling the normal paper work required under normal circumstances. Then pile all the VA work on top of that and you have one big job. People run short on hours, records are misplaced, students want to know why about everything, teachers have special requests and they all end up on the dean's desk for final action. In spite of all this he takes an hour off three times a week to teach college psychology. A busy schedule that would run most people into a rather ragged condition. But if a student is in a jam or needs some advice the dean is always willing to drop the job at hand and take over someone else's headaches. He manages to maintain a close working relationship with all his students and keeps their interests in his mind. Very few students have ever been told to come back later because the front office was too busy to fool around, A fulltime backer of education, Mr. Stonehocker has managed to work a lot of schooling in on his own record. He took his fiist two de- grees from Coe and Iowa and has since put in plenty of summertime work at the Universities of Chicago, Colorado, Southern Cal and two more summers of grad study at Iowa U, His job as a Dean of the junior college puts him right in touch with the I. C situation and he is firmly convinced that this t e of trainin f - YP Q is excellent training either as terminal education or as a preliminary if for senior campus work. 34 ri They say that the junior college will drop by the roacl when the fi vets pull out but D. Doyle Stonehocker is intending to pull a few sur- prises out of educations hat when things get to looking bad. is Sophomores ANDERSON. KENNETH-Men's Union, APPLETON. IAMIE-Men's Union.
